How much oxycodone is too much?

It is difficult to say. How much oxycodone is too much depends upon your exposure to opioids and opiates, as well as the type of oxycodone you take (controlled release vs. immediate release). More on the variables which can cause oxycodone toxicity here.

minute read

Oxycodone doses always start low and then gradually increase as your body’s tolerance to opioids builds. But how much oxycodone is too much will depend on a number of personal factors, including your medical condition, your age, your current exposure to opiates or opioids and other medications you are taking.  If you are getting high on oxycodone, risk factors for possible overdose increase.  More here on how much oxycodone doctors prescribe, and a section for your questions about oxycodone dosing principles at the end.

Oxycodone strengths

The available strength of oxycodone will depend upon what type of time release oxycodone you take, and whether or not it is combined with other medicines. Sometimes, oxycodone is prescribed in immediate release form and has a duration of action of 3-4 hours. Other times, oxycodone is prescribed in controlled release form, which increases duration of action to 12 hours. Still other times, oxycodone is combined with other non-steroidal analgesics like aspirin or acetaminophen.

1. Generic immediate release oxycodone – Generic oxycodone tablets are available in strengths of 5 mg, 15 mg, or 30 mg.

2. Generic controlled release oxycodone – Oxycodone controlled release tablets are also available as oral tablets. As a generic tablet, this opioid analgesic can be supplied in 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, and 80 mg tablet strengths.

3. Brand name oxycodone formulas – Oxycodone is also found as the main pain relieving ingredient in brand name drugs. One of these drugs offers time release oxycodone (OxyContin addictive qualities are of particular concern). Another offers oxycodone and aspirin (Percodan). While still another combing oxycodone with acetaminophen (Percocet snorting also increases risk of overdose). The available strengths of oxycodone in each of these brand name medications follow.

OxyContin = 10 mg, 15 mg, 20 mg, 30 mg, 40 mg, 80 mg, 160 mg
Percodan = 4.8355 mg
Percocet = 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg

How much oxycodone is safe?

This question is a little difficult to answer.

The amount of oxycodone that is safe for you depends on your body’s current exposure to opioids. The starting amount for people who have never taken opioids is different than those who are already on opioid therapy. And doses will depend upon whether oxycodone is in immediate action or controlled release form. Furthermore, as doctors increase doses, they consider a number of different variables.

Immediate release oxycodone safe dosage

Starting doses of immediate release oxycodone for opioid naive people start low. People who have not been exposed to opioid analgesics are usually started on immediate release oxycodone hydrochloride tablets in a dosing range of 5 to 15 mg every 4 to 6 hours as needed for pain.

As with any potent opioid, doctors then adjust the dosing regimen of oxycodone for each person individually, taking into account medical history, especially as pertains to analgesic pain medications. Doctors pay particular attention to current daily dose, the degree of opioid tolerance, general medical condition and adverse side effects when increasing dosage.

Controlled release oxycodone safe dosage

Starting doses of controlled release oxycodone in opioid naive people are conservative. Doctors usually prescribe a starting dose of 10 mg of oxycodone controlled release tablets for people who require continuous around-the-clock therapy for an extended period of time.

And as with immediate release oxycodone, if a person is taking opioid medications prior to taking oxycodone, doctors factor in the potency of the prior opioid relative to controlled release oxycodone in order to calculate total daily dose (TDD) of oxycodone. As a guideline, the total daily oxycodone dose for controlled release tablets can usually be increased by 25% to 50% of the current dose at each increase, once every day or two.

How much oxycodone can you take at once?

Again, the answer to this question will depend upon how opioid tolerant your body is and how much/what type of opioids you are currently taking. There are, however, a few guidelines doctors follow when dosing oxycodone. Doctors know how long it takes for oxycodone tablets to dissolve in the stomach, release drugs to the bloodstream, and reach the brain. So not only does oxycodone dosing take into account the general metabolism of the drug, but doctors also consider a person’s weight, how long they’ve been prescribed the medication, and what other medications they are taking.

Immediate release oxycodone single doses

It is important to follow prescription guidelines for immediate release oxycodone tablets to ensure safe dosing. Because immediate release oxycodone effects wear off 4-6 hours after use, these tablets are taken as needed and dosage strength and frequency are both important to follow in order to avoid toxicity. Single doses of immediate release oxycodone start at 5 to 15 mg every 4 to 6 hours and are increased according to need and doctor discretion as opioid tolerance builds. So safe dosing for opioid naive people is between 5 to 15 mg of immediate release oxycodone at once.

Controlled release oxycodone single doses

Single doses of oxycodone controlled release tablets are designed to provide longer term pain relief over a period of 12 hours. But controlled release oxycodone tablets SHOULD NOT BE GIVEN in doses greater than 40 mg to people just starting oxycodone. Instead, A reasonable initial dose of oxycodone controlled release tablet in patients who are not opioid-tolerant is 10 mg every 12 hours. Furthermore, 80 mg and 160 mg tablets ARE FOR USE IN OPIOID-TOLERANT PEOPLE ONLY. Safe dosing of controlled release oxycodone starts at 10 mg but always occurs in doses of less than 40 mg at once for “beginners” and then increases as opioid tolerance builds. Low initial doses are also indicated in special patient populations (older than 65, liver and kidney problems) and in people taking other central nervous system depressants.

How much oxycodone to overdose?

Toxic levels of oxycodone in the system can cause your breathing and circulation to slow to the point where you heart just stops. Oxycodone overdose can occur by simply taking oxycodone too frequently or in too much quantity. But overdose on oxycodone can also occur by taking oxycodone other than prescribed (chewing oxycodone, snorting oxycodone, injecting oxycodone). When abused this way, these routes of administration change the way oxycodone act in the body.

Abuse of any kind of oxycodone poses a risk of overdose, but especially the controlled release tablets. When you facilitate the immediate release of a controlled release form of oxycodone (OxyContin) and crush/snort/inject the pills, a 12-hour dose hits the central nervous system all at once. In fact, thousands of deaths due to oxycodone overdose have been reported annually with abuse and misuse of Oxycodone HCl controlled release tablets. So if you are chewing, crushing, inhaling, snorting or injecting crushed oxycodone tablets, you put yourself at risk of oxycodone overdose.

How much oxycodone is fatal?

As with the above questions, the answer is relative to how tolerant your body already is to oxycodone, opiates or opioids. However, a single dose of controlled release oxycodone greater than 40 mg, or total daily doses of of controlled release oxycodone greater than 80 mg, may cause fatal respiratory depression when given to people new to oxycodone. And to repeat, abuse of any kind of oxycodone poses a risk of death. Both immediate and controlled release versions of oxycodone are meant to be swallowed. Chewing, crushing, snorting or injecting oxycodone leads to rapid release and potentially fatal doses of oxycodone in the body. So snorting, inhaling, chewing or injecting oxycodone (especially controlled release versions) can kill you.

How much oxycodone should I take?

This may sound obviously, but you should take the amount of oxycodone prescribed to you by your doctor. Your doctor understands your medical history, knows what other types of medications you are taking, and understands the way that oxycodone works in the body. So, follow your doctors suggestions. If however, you think that you are taking less or more oxycodone than you should, only adjust doses after a clinical evaluation. Self-adjusting doses of oxycodone is not recommended and can trigger unwanted side effects, including withdrawal symptoms and/or overdose.

  2. I. Take oxycodone at 5mg three times in 24 hour period. I take it for periodic leg movement syndrome. I have taken this for the last 25 years what is overdose

  3. How much is too much for an Oxycodone HCL 30mg when it is prescribed routinely q4hour and with a PRN of the same dosage which is q6 PRN? A patient is getting all his routine oxycodone HCL 30mg as scheduled which is basically 2 tablet every shift. Aside from that, getting the PRN of same dose. For a total of 9 Oxycodone HCL 30mg in 24 hours every single day. Is this person getting too much everyday or not? Thank you.

  4. I take one oxycodone 10-325 every night when I go to bed. I recently had knee replacement surgery and I simply cannot fall asleep until i take the pill (I try to do without it every night but the pain becomes too intense). I need the pill to relax my muscles and enable me to fall asleep. Can I continue doing this until the knee heals (3-6 months)?

  5. I broke my back at 13yrs -had 2 13 inch Herrington rods inserted with 5 vertabrae being fused,I am 66 now and in pain-i was on 8 80mg oxycontin for about 15 years-a gradual increase.I have a new doctor who decreased it by 5 to 3 a day, begging just for 1 more a day as i run out and spend 1 to 2 days in bed a week but he wouldn’t.even tho i am down to 3 a day-that was put in place 1 and a half years ago it doesn’t work as it shoud so i did ask for an increase-doctor said i should have one but he wasn’t going to give it to me as the board above him has it’s recommendations of how much i should be taking.BUT of course this has nothing to do with the pain i am in and that my quality of life doc made an error on my prescription leaving me with nothing for 3 days-i took an ambulance to hospital emerg where they did not help me at all-another time tele health said i should see a dr within 4 hours-again this dr did not treat me.drs say get involved more with your own health -i would if i was given a prescription pad-i know what i need-and i have studied-i don;t take this lightly-if a dr isn’t going to help-then who?really-who?do no evil treat me with respect-the drs credo-toilet paper-i have never seen a distinguished profession turn into a puppet show-they should all be embarrased-your bosses tell you what to do even though i am agonizing in bed with pain you can only imagine.i bet my bottom dollar if they were in pain they would somehow manage an increase,66 years old and i am still finding incompetence all around treat me.not your social problem of 7 years to which you STILL don’t have an should be ashamed-any another industry and you would be fired-instead of keeping people off the streets looking for illegal meds you are sending them there-SHAME ON YOU.Possibly it started by persons on disability who are living well below the poverty line-the easiest way to top off the 13k they get is to sell their meds-why not pay them 4,000 more a year-taxpayer should not yell as they have to pay either way-just a thought-no one else seems to have any.thanks for hearing me.gary.

  6. Hi, I’m on Oxycodone-Acetaminophen 10 MG-325 MG and Gabapentin 600. Take the Oxy ONLY 4x a day, 1 more if pain is to great. And 4x ONLY of Gab. I have Neuropathy and have had toes removed, pain is so severe so these help. They do nothing to me but numb the pain. Now my Dr. gave me Metformin 1,000 MG 2x a day. My stomach has been upset for a week, since I started taking it. I just emailed her to tell her i’m going to stop it to see if this is why. Does the Met. interfere with those two meds? Thx so much

  7. I accidentally took an extra oxy 15 by accident. I take normally 30 my as prescribed. Will I be ok? I do have high tolerance

  8. Nov. 30 /17 I had a complete knee repla cement. Took 2 pills of 5mg of oxycodone with 325 acetaminophen for first 2 weeks, then about 4 pills a day. It is now 5 weeks after surgery. Advil or Tylenol doesn’t work with giving me then same comfort feeling. I am okay with 2 pills of oxycodone in a 24 hour time and I do not have any feelings of “tripping” and there is a small underlying pain but comfortable and I sleep at night fine. The only other drug I take is thyroid med. My weight and health is good. I am 69 yrso old. Am I okay to keep taking the 2 pills a day or am I being seduced into addiction.? Some of the dialogue on here is rough and sounds to me like they are not sensitive to not using a potentially helpful drug in a sensible way. Thank you.

  9. I have been taking 4 10mg/325 actame for 15 years for restless leg any. It’s the only thing that works so far it does not effect me mentally or physically . I have tried reship but broke out in super hives and I tried lyrica but I hullicnated so I disposed of them after one pill. Is there any other medication that might work, as my pip says this works so stay with it. I am a 66 year old male in very good health other than the rls.

  11. Have been taking immediate release oxycodone since total knee replacement on 8/4/17. Currently taking only one pill of 2.5 mg at bedtime to control restless legs which seem to act up a few hours after I fall asleep. My daughter keeps telling me I’ll become addicted, but if I don’t take the 2.5, I wake up in the middle of the night with throbbing legs and I can’t sleep. Seeing the doctor in 10 days. Meanwhile, can I safely continue to take that small dose without risk of addiction? I’m scared!

Why is that that I have that kind of reaction it will even keep me up at night it is like I drank 5 to 10 cups of coffee. I ask doctor and pharmacist and they say I should not have that feeling. I even take 1 mg of lorazepam it is supposed to relax me the medications work opposite either taking one or taking the other they both do the same thing when they are supposed to calm me down. 16. I had an open heart surgery 8 months ago and had 2 thoracentesis and 2 pleurodesis after the open heart surgery, due to fluid accumulation in my lungs, I also had my defibrillator replaced at the same time. After my surgery, I was prescribed 5 mg oxycodone ER every 4 to 6 hours. After 8 days, I was released from the hospital and still prescribed the same thing. I did not take the the oxy that much, though. The most I took was 3 times a day. I am still experiencing pain from the procedures up until now, but I take oxycodone 2 times a day (morning and evening) only for fear of being addicted to it. Sometimes, I take it more than 12 hours after each dose trying to ween myself from it. But I feel like my body cannot stand it without taking one because my back and other parts of my body start hurting and I feel very uncomfortable and restless. Am I addicted to it already? Please advise. Thank you.

  17. I have been on oxycodone for over 5 years at the rate of 5mg every 6 hours. I just had a urine TOX screen by my doctor and results indicated 4479 ng/ml. Is this inline for my prescription? I am 71 and have mild to severe back pain. I have gone several days at a time and without taking medication and don’t seem to have any withdrawal symptoms. The most I have ever taken is one extra 5 mg but usually only take about 3 per day. My doctor hasn’t contacted me yet about results. Thanks.

  22. Is it commom for a doctor to tell a patient to take more pills than what is written on the actual prescription bottle that he has prescribed ? In other words the perscription bottle says take 1 tablet every 8 hrs as needed as directed, by the consumer reports well the doctor said I can take it as I need it up to four a day. Should one be alarmed if the consumer received a perscription on Monday for 90 pills and by Friday there are 34 pills left ? Thank you for any insight .

  23. I am on oxycodone 10 mg every 4 hrs for severe back pain, also take sleep meds, Xanax. All I want to say is if all these new laws are made for the drug dealers, abusers, or whoever and patients that take narcotics just to make it from one day to the next will also be affected I for one will turn to street drugs. I am 66 yo and honestly don’t care. Drs are not doing their jobs for the patients because the have been whipped by the very people that wants quality healthcare. It’s a freaking joke, sad thing is the patients are suffering at the hands of their so called Dr

  24. I have taken 15 mg. oxycodone immediate release tablets 5 times a day long term (well over a year) but this amount now does not work well. The pain is not managed as well and I feel symptoms of withdrawal towards the end of the day. I have now been put on timed release 15 mg. pills 3 times a day with a bunch of 5 mg. immediate release for “break through” pain. All I feel is withdrawal and the pain is still a problem. What can I ask for as far as a dose increase that would be safe. I’m 63 and weigh 260 lbs. thanks

  25. I was snorting 5-8 pills of the 30mg IR. My last dose was 3 days ago. If I make it thru the day I will be clean for 72 hours. At what point is it out of my system so that I could pass a urine drug screen?

  26. I need some advice. My 57 year old son has been taking this medication for almost 3 years
And I think he is addicted to these pills. I am his mother are I thought I used to be. He gas started verbally hateful to me. The Dr is giving him 90 pills a month. ..I cryed all night Sunday night until 5Am Monday morning finally we mm t to sleep from being exhausted over all that he said to me. Please give me some advice. 27. I suffer from severe/acute pain for three years now and I take Oxycodone 10-325 mg. I have been taking the same dose now for a couple of years and they don’t work for me anymore. I take two pills in the morning at 8:00 AM, two more pills at around 2:00 PM, and two more pills and hour before bedtime around 11 PM. The pain is pretty excruciating and in my neck, lower back, and a really bad knee. My doctor does not want to help me and will not give me any more than what I am currently taking which as I stated is six pills throughout the entire day. Why are they not working for me anymore? Do you have any suggestions that I could ask my doctor to where he will up my dosage a little more so I can relieve the pain at least a little bit? I don’t take any other medications except for Synthroid in the morning which I have been taking for many Years. The only other thing I take is ibuprofen at times and vitamin B 12. I’m sure there are many others who have the same problem and have excruciating pain like myself and are given prescriptions with a higher dose or allowed to take more pills than I do per day so they can help my pain. Please help.

  28. Can oxycodone 10 mg cause a person to talk out of their head and cant stand up hardly. If it has been that a person took 80 mg in one day? 29. I accidentally took two 10 mg tablets of immediate release oxycodone… so 20 mg all at once.

I usually take a total of 10 mg every 3-4 hours.

Is this going to be an overdose problem?

  30. I cannot remember if I took my 5:00 20 mg oxycodone what could happen if I take one I have been on them for 12 years

  31. I have sharp muscle spasms right now making me jerky from my shoulders arms wrist down legs to feet. I have taken 10 mg of oxycodone for this agonising pain. 34. I have been on Percocet 10/325 for 7 years for lower back pain. I have been taking 2 every four hours for a total of 8 a day. Is this within the Government and doctors standards?

  35. HI, I’m a registered nurse, we have been giving endone for our patients in rehab for acute pain. Our patients are given 5-10mg of Endone every 4 hours. However, i have observed that when the patient has already taken 5mg of the said drug and still complains of pain after 30 mins to an hour the nurses give another 5mg to make up for the 10mg that they can maximumly have every 4 hours. Is this safe? or do we have to wait for four full hours to give another dose?

  36. An older relative has been taking oxy for over 8 years, obviously is addicted, and in need of more and more. This person ends up in the hospital when the pain is not controlled by the current dose. Why not let this person, at age 86, take more and keep the pain more under control? At this point, this person is not coming off the pain meds and is suffering by not having enough. The pain comes in waves and sometimes will require a higher dose and other times will go longer without needing it.

  37. Broke my ankle 3 weeks ago. Doctor prescribed 10mg oxycodone, 30 tablet. Used it up in 2 weeks. Asked for more and very reluctantly gave me 20- 5mg tablets. I now only use 2 1/2mgs for late nite pains once per day. How addicting would that amount be?

  38. I have a friend who has a super high tolerance. He takes for 30 milligram oxycodones (blues) Atwoods all the time and it’s never ever a problem. His tolerance is super high. If he takes any less than that it doesn’t affect him very much like it used to. He just now decided to take 6 of the 30 milligram oxycodone. Just an honest opinion should he be worried about ODing. He was just going to take five but accidentally took one more so now he is worried and is wondering if he should make himself throw up because he did not mean to take 6, he only meant to take five which he had done once before and was fine. Please no rude comments he understands how stupid this was and just needs some honest caring advice to make sure that he stays safe

I am 115ish pound girl (17 yrs old) I have had a prescription for tramadol for back pain for a while so I have a bit of a tolerance, and have taken a quarter of an oxy 80 a few times before for pain (a friend has a prescription) however, I’ve recently had breathing problems start when taking tramadol, and today I took just over a quarter of an oxy 80 slow release because of neck pain and being unable to see a doctor, and I’m worried I’m going to have breathing problems again. Any advice on how to either sober up before bed, or what I should do to avoid or what I do if I run into breathing problems again? Do you think this dose could be fatal at all? Never used to be paranoid till the breathing problems started happening. Thx in advance

  41. We found my brother deceased. The blood toxicity showed .402 mg/L or 402ng/ml I need to know how many OxyContin 30 he had to eat to reach that level please.

    1. Hi Marybeth. I’m really sorry for your loss… I suggest that you speak with a coroner, a toxicologist, or another professional who can answer your questions.

  42. I was giving Oxycodon for degenerative disc disease and chronic pain in shoulder after 4 surgeries, replacement and failure and removal of loose parts. I was taking 3 10mg OxyCodone but needed 1 more. So was sent to pain specialist and they gave me OxyContin time release. Started having blackouts. They switched me to Hysingla Er which side effects, headaches and can’t sleep and it’s doesn’t work as well, plus Insurance refuse to pay, until other drugs are tried with worse side effects. What is my alternative? Going to a surgeon after I pay off $6000.00 for hospital and test to find out why I was blacking out. Hopeful for help and get off these pain pills.

  43. Preventing opioid deaths. Hi, I am spreading the word to agencies that one of the most common causes of Herron and opiate o d deaths is the “just one more time” mentality; users who have quit and been clean for a while, or have been incarcerated, decide to experience the euphoria from it again, and they are careful this time, or are planning to have this be the last time they use, and then it kills them this time. This is because they think they can use the same amount they used to, and they can’t, because the body is no longer used to it. This is a very common and often overlooked cause of fatality.
Also of note:my daughters friend said there is a lethal Pill going around that dealers are selling in Mass. It’s a small blue pill that says
A 215 on it. It masquerades as 30 mg oxycodone, a favorite of abusers, but it is really fentanyl, not oxy. thank you for your work. I’ve recently lost two good friends to this.

  44. I’ve been taking(prescribed) 8-5mg of oxy codone and 4-10 mg of hydro codone for the last 3-4 years. I’ve also taken 10 mg of prednisone for almost 40 years. I have severe arthritis. My mother has severe RA. I’m active. I walk 6-8 miles a day. I’d like to get off the opioids or at least reduce. What do you recommend?

  45. I am a disable veteran , and have been on oxycodone 15mg 5x a day for 9 years now. and just found out I had an enlarged liver. In which the doctor said by the bioxspy. it looked like chemical. and told me he believe it was the Lisinopril 40mg I had been takening for b/p in which it was keeping my b/p at around 140/89 to 130 /80 but and mri was done for upper right chest under my my arm. and that’s when they found my enlarged liver. in which I was having pain their under my arm and in my upper back. So they put me on losartan 100mg 10 days ago. and my blood pressure has when up to 180/101 when I check it first thg in the morning. Plus I been having runny nose and couching, and feeling so tired. like doing nothing. even able to feel my heart pounding in my chest. and arms at time. I called my doctor and he said it just take a month ot so to get use to it. but these conditions are making me feel like I going to have a heart attack. the lowest my b/p gets now during the day is 167/91. And someone told me it may have been the pain meds causing my liver to enlarge and it may have caused my bloo/pressure to jump like it did also. But my b/p was fine until they switched it to losartan. And they said the Lisinopril was causing it to become enlaged. I would be truly greatful if a doctor or someone out there could help me out here. I am thinking about switching back to the Lisinopril 40mg on my own. But I don’t want to if it destrying my liver. And I need to know if the pain meds would cause my b/p to rise. I know it does fronm my pain. before I was put on the pain Iraq. I just don’t know what to do. and I don’t want to die. While the doctor sit and tell to to wait and get use to the losartan 100mg.

My 80 year old husband has dementia and is in a Care Centre and has been started on Endone for pain which I don’t believe he has. 20 minutes afterwards he cannot be roused and stays that way nearly all day. The pills are crushed in a teaspoon of yoghurt. They have also put him on Lexam. He has never had pills except a few panadol in his life and and is a quiet and mild person. The dose is 5mg. halved each morning and then during the day. I am concerned about him not being able to be roused. Please comment. Thank you.

Dilaudid is 18 mg twice daily
Also on the list are lyrica, cymbalta, pantaloc,

For breakthrough I take generally 30-60mg of oxy. I know, that is a lot, but my question is….on those days where nothing seems to help….would doubling? Or tripling? My oxy iR likely result in OD? Based on my tolerances???

  53. Why aren’t pain clinics prescribing oxy every four hours to those of us who have no side effects and are opioid tolerant….I’ve taken 6 a day for past seven years without increase and am still prescribed only 4/day…Don’t doctors realize that every 6 hrs is for opiate naive folks AND the instant release really only last about 31/2 hrs anyway? Why do they continue to undertreated and continue to discharge us for psuedo

  54. Hey! Im a bit scared because i took one and a third of 15 mg Oxycodone Intant release. So im guessing itd be a little les than 30 mg at one time. Its been about 4 and a half hours ago and i feel really dizzy and faint still. Im pretty sure its my anxiety.. and i dont seem to be having trouble breathing just my body feels really weird. Im not excessively tired. I only took this much because my pain was a bit more severe and i hadnt been able to make it to the doctor. My doctor just gave me oxycontin 15mg twice a day. I keep reading horrible things about it, but I wonder if that’s just cause people are taken to much. If 15mg high to start with. I have been on norco for several months

  58. My wife has had stage four cancer for a year and is being treated. Metastized. Aug 5th she was having terrible pain on left shoulder. They took xray and found what looks like a cancer on the collar bone. Doctor prescribed 10 mg of oxy every four hours and sent her home until Monday morning to see radiation specialist. After one day the 10mg was not controlling the pain, no one to ask about it, but went to 15mg every four hours which seems to be working. Will see doctor early Monday morning. Your thoughts

  59. Carole B – hi …I am a 72 year old woman with severe chronic pain on a dose of 100mg daily of oxycontin , along with tenorman & atacand for blood pressure & oroxine for an underactive thyroid. My doctor wants me to take the oxycontin in 3 divided doses daily & I’m not sure how many hours I need between doses to take it safely. Any advice would be greatly appreciated… cheers –

  60. Hi …I am a 72year old female with severe chronic pain – I’ve been on 100mg oxycontin daily(50mg am & 50mg pm) for 3 years , along with tenormin ,& atacand for blood pressure, & oroxine for my underactive thyroid. The oxycontin dosage no longer relieves the pain very well & my doc suggested changing the way of taking the same dosage to 3 times daily ( 40mg am , 20mg after lunch , 40mg at night . Would taking the oxycontin this way become cumulative & build up to toxic levels. Your advice would be greatly appreciated – thank you

  61. I am prescribed 10 mg. oxycodone intant release 5 times per day for severe lumbar and sacral and cervical pain post discectomies with plates and screws for several years. Now with arthritis and muscle spasms. Retired from 30 years of nursing. Lots of lifting and pushing heavy beds. I also take Baclofen 10 mg. 4 times per day along with the Oxycodone.
I’ve only been taking the Oxycodone 4 times per day. My question is: I was going to take my 11″30 am dose of Oxycodone IR 10mg & Baclofen 10 mg. I wrote it down on the tablet the time taken and the phone rang. I answered it. (I always keep written record of when I take my meds) when I hung the phone up I took my meds. But after swallowING them, wasn’t absolutely she if I hadn’t taken them before I wrote it down. That would mean if I did take it twice (not sure)
I would’ve taken Oxycodone IR 20 mg. & Baclofen 20 mg. Now, I have been on both of these meds for man years. Should I have any problem with it? Or should I wait and see if,I have symptoms and get help?

  62. My son recently passed away. His toxicology report said he had 2000ng of oxycodone in his system. When I googled that amount the report said 2000ng would probably not even show up in a urine test for the courts. I’m so confused as the report said it was a possible overdose. Can you tell me approximately how many pills that would have been. He was prescribed 30mg every four to six hours as needed. He had been taking that amount approximately 6 years and used a minimum of 6 a day for pain

    1. Hi Vickie. I’m really sorry for your loss. I’d suggest that you speak with a toxicologist or a coroner or another medical professional about your concerns. We’re not able to provide you with a qualified response. I wish you peace in this time of loss.

  63. Hi,i’ve been suffering from chronic pack pain for more than 30 years and the the only medicine that releases my pain special at night on the bad, where if i don’t take Oxycodone i can’t sleep,so i’ve been taking half of 5g,i cut the pill in half, is this bad? i’m always in pain but i suffer in silence and should take 3 to 5 pils a day but i don’t,during the day i walk for an hour everyday, but restrain myself from taking more pills so i would feel ok all day, but i prefer to suffer during the day and not to take many pills but at night in bad i have to take some,do you think my dose is still harmfully?i use to take just one at night but now i take half.

  64. I have been prescribed oxycodone 30# 3x per day. My Doctor wasn’t in the office on the day I went to my appointment. Me and my doctor are on good terms she knows what I have to go through everyday of my life. I have never failed a drug test I don’t drink or do drug’s just what my doctor prescribes me. I have severe lower back pain and suffering knee pain. Anyway this other doctor I seen last time changed my meds. From oxycodone 30mg 3x per day he put me on norco10mg 4x aday sort of like he doesn’t care what I am going through. I don’t have any clue why this happened? ? He could have cut my dose down but dropping me all the way down to norco10mg. Can you please tell me why this happened I’m terrible in pain

  65. I have osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, bulging disc, chronic pain all over my body, I’m taking 15mg of Oxycodone , and 25mg of fentanyl patch ,and I’m still in pain, what is to much to be safe. Thanks

  66. I take Oxycodone/APAP 10-325MG tabs t tablet every four hours if needed. I take one to two tabs every day. I took one a day for years before the falls. I broke 8 bones in my back and crushed my pelvic to smithereens, and also was put on oxygen a few months later for COPD. I have fallen four serious times with head injuries. It is difficult to walk, but I’m fine as long as I’m inside. My doctor said that he has to see me in his office every three months in order to continue the oxycodone because Medicare requires it. This is a real hardship on me. Can something be done to help m e? I am doing everything I possibly can to stay in my home. I do not want to go to a nursing home. It really is stressful. thank you ….Frances Clark

  67. I had a neck fusion in 1999 and a double fusion in my back in 2000. My pain came back in 2010, so I have been back on pain medication. I am currently taking 40mg of percocet per day. It doesn’t seem to be helping anymore. What do you think the next dose should be? Also, is there something I can add to what I’m taking now, that will last longer than 4 hours?

  68. Hello, I regularly take hydrocodone 4 times a day at 10 mg for the last 8 months. my question is will I be okay to take a total of 30 mg of oxycodone spread out in one day?

    1. Hi Alyssa. I suggest you speak with your doctor or a pharmacist for all dosage changes you want to make.

  69. I have been taking three #10 Vicodin a day for about two years for severe cronic back pain. I’m a 76 year old female. This week my doctor gave me morphine tablets,15 mg every 12 hours,or two a day. They really didn’t give me the relief I was hoping for. My doctor also gave me my #10 vicodin and said I could take one if the pain got too bad , a few hours after I took the morphine. My question is, can I take one #10 vicodin with the morphine at the same time twice a day? Will it harm me?

  70. I been on Oxycodone for 5 years. 10 mg 6-8 a day pretty much the last 2 years. I’m wanting to get off the Oxy and just wondering how dependent am I. I can tell when I cut back (empty feeling in stomach, shakes, nervous, and my pain returns with avengence). I’m not sure I can stand the pain but I want to try. Can you give me some idea of how I will/should react? 5 years, I’m 63, 240 lbs, fairly good shape. Thank you so much. Alan

  71. I take 60mg tabs of oxycontin 4 times a day, and also a total of 90 mg total a day of oxycodone for back up pain. I have been taking the oxycontin how it is now for like 7 years, and the oxycodone for maybe 3-4 years at least. Since this time I have gained at least 40 to 45 pounds, I weigh now 200lbs. And am about5’5″”-5’56”. Due to shrinking or curving of my spine. So anyways long story short I received an email from the testing lab that just did my last urine test for pain management and was shocked and didn’t understand it, and it is worrying me. She tested for oxycodone and diazepam. Well, it said every thing was high and not just a little according to whatever a cut off level is. For oxycodonecodon it said my cut off was <50ng/ml and my number was 18007. So is there some calculation I'm supposed to do?? I don't understand why my number is so high, I don't understand between taking mg, and the metabolites coming out in ng/ml. What am I to make of this, can someone please explain?? Should I be worried at my upcoming appt?? Help!!

  72. Hi I was prescribed morphine for my condition of Charcot Marie tooth I was taking 30 mlg one morning one afternoon daily then I had a injury and strained my mustle X in between my ribs so doctor gave me 60 mlg twice daily and ten mlg for extra if the pain got unbarable today I took 60 mlg in the morning 10mlg in the afternoon then I took thirty this eve now I’m scared to go to sleep in case I don’t wake up can you advise me please

  73. My backs bad. Getting a major surgery next week. Been bad for 7 weeks. I had a tolerance years ago from Percocets and it seemed to come right back this time around when getting the pills. Started low, but after the doctors have seen the massive disc issues, they’ve now bumped me up to 30mg every 4 hours. That’s a lot. I know. Some times I take 40. They don’t have Tylenol in them so I have to take 1-2 extra strength Tylenol with them to get any feeling off of the dose.

My surgery is next week but after reading blogs like this, I’m worried I’m going to die in my sleep before I get to my damn surgery.

at most I may have 2 glasses of wine at night. But even with this high dosage, am I safe due to my tolerance? I mean, the doc prescribed this to me. My pain is through the roof. I’m waiting on the crappy insurance company to approve my surgery.

  74. I just started taking oxycodone/Acetaminophen 10-325MG TB and am on my second day. I have a herniated disc with pinched sciatic nerve. The dosage says “Take one tablet by mouth twice daily as needed for pain” The first day was fine as it kicked in within little time. However this evening late before going to be bed I was in pain and took one at 9 PM (last dosage was 11 AM this morning) and the latest dosage has not taken affect yet – three hours later at midnight. I am in terrible pain…can I take another one?

  78. Is it dangerous to take 10mg of melatonin with 10mg of oxycodone for sleep? I never sleep when I’m on opiates I’ve been on them a long time.

  79. My 85 year old dad accidentally took his morning dose and evening dose of morphine 30 mg (so 60) and oxycoone 10 mg. Not sure if he took 2 oxycodone as his bottle was empty. He also took his heart meds. He has been on this type of meds for years

    1. Hi, Donna. I suggest you call Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 for an assessment of overdose risk. Or, if the situation gets worse, take him to the ER.

  80. Hi I was prescribed 10 mg immediate release (generic oxycodone/ acetometophine) for my 3 ruptured discs and nerve damage. I’ve been taking 5mg immediate release oxycodone. Sometimes it s a little strong can I cut these in half safely? Will it be the same as a 5 mg percocet?

    1. Hello, Smith. If your medication is strong, then you may cut in half. But, I suggest you consult with your doctor to reduce your dosage.

  81. I have tookem 3 20mg oxycodon & 3 tramadol plus 2 clodipans should I be afride when can I take another oxycodon? Because I’m still in pain

  82. i have been on 1o mg oxycodone/325 for two years on and off. they don;t work anymore. the doctor raised it to 15 mg without tylenol when an mri shoerd a fracture of t8. i see a spine doctor friday, but the pain is intolerable. one pill every 8 hrs doesn’t help at all. is it safe to take two pills at once, hopefully to get some relief. thank you

  83. Someone accidentally put their two 80 mg.oxycontin in my pill case. I took them before bed. Woke up the next morning with extreme vomiting. I was going n and out of consciousness. I had difficulty urinating, which was when I realized something more than a flu or food poisoning was going on. Went to ER. Gat Narcan. Put me on oxygen. My O2 was 83. Every time I slipped Ou of consciousness, I’d stop breathing and the machine would start beeping.

I find myself wondering if I almost just died.

  85. My husband has been taking oxycodone and oxycontin for pain from spinal stenosis.
He is supposed to take oxycontin every 12 hours (20 mg) and oxycodone every 6 hours (10 mg)
for a total of 80 mg. However, he said he still has pain. Last night he said he will increase dosage to 120 mg a day (2 20 mg of oxycontin a day) for a total of 40 mg + 8 oxycodone a day for a total of
80 mg -= 120 mg a day. Is that leading to an overdose? Can he accumulate this med in his body that leads to a overdose?

    1. Hello Kathleen. If a doctor prescribed the dosage, then it cannot lead to an overdose. Advise your husband to consult his doctor before increasing the intake.

  86. Hi

I take 5MG Oxycodone 1x per week (once PER WEEK) for shoulder pain that comes and goes. If I stay at this dose for a year-18 months until surgery, would I be OK?
I would NOT increase that dose. Would that, in theory – be harmful physically?

    Thank you

    1. Hi Lisa. You should be ok, that’s not a large dose nor is the frequency of taking it high. Good luck with the surgery!

  87. if a user roxy 30mg two yrs ago stopped then maybe once to three times a week or two does 15-30mg in 24hr period by snorting. is it possible for body to become physically dependant with severe withdrawals or is it mental.just doesn’t seem possible for sporadic use.

  88. I was wondering if you could tell me possibility of becoming physically dependant resulting in withdrawals ie. vomiting. from snorting 1-30mg roxy within a 24_hr. period. (person used to over year ago abuse constantly several a day but now may be one a week if lucky) if don’t know can you point me in direction. my sister is being played serious fool straight to the poor house I’m trying to prove to her it’s not gonna kill the girl it’s psychological from that small infrequent use. thank you have great one.

  89. hello, I took a 30mg perc 2 days ago. ive never take these before and forgot to cut in half. now ive been throwing up for the past 3 days and im not sure what to do.. please help

  90. I was wondering your opinion if this could be a fatal dose: My 39 year old daughter possibly (autopsy results still pending) ingested 30 each of 5 mg oxycodone + 325 mg APAP along with 30 each of 5 mg clonzapam

  91. I take percocets 10/325 a day, five a day. I have MS and sciatica nerve damage, not to mention 2 bulging disk, plus fibro.I’m in constant pain. I was taking 2 120 mg of morphine plus 3 oxycodones a day. Long story short, I got cut off for no reason. The pain clinic I went to would take people in then toss them out like garbage because they were prescribing too much meds. I went thru terrible withdrawals and was taking Xanax 3 a day, for sleep.I thought I was gonna die!! Are pain clinics allowed to just cut a person off like that?? I was up for 5 days straight and hulisnated

  92. I normally take 2-15mg of Oxycodone every 4-6 hrs up to six tablets. I took my 2-15mg about 30 min before bed. When I got into bed I accidentally took 2 more pills forgetting I already took two pills.

Will the 4 pills of 15mg hurt me as I was going to go to bed. Now I’m thinking I’ll stay up as I don’t want to go and not wake up in the morning. Please let me know what you think.

  93. I have severe neuropathy in my feet, its unbearable. I am currently taking 300 tramadol once a day, 800 gababenton 4 times a day, and 10 mg ic oxycodone 10-325, I have been on thisvdose of oxy for at least 2 years, I have no side effectsvexcept constipaion which I have handled. I take them 4 times a day. They useto give me about 30 40 %relief dropping my pain from over 10 to 5 or6 making a big difference, and allowing me to be active, going to the gymn 4 days a week and doing normal things
around house, even just taking a shower is unbearabl having to stand there. Now they dont seem to do more thanbanout 10%. I am going to tell the dr this weds and they are so bad about u even mentioning the narcotics, im afraid hell stop them all together if I ask for an increase, they treat everone like an addict. Wouldnt it be normal that they woould have to be increased after several years?
    Thanks , Kirby

  94. Taking (2) 5mg. Oxycodone+acetaminophen every 6 hrs. for pain. Could this account for slow thinking, mind not grasping things? Dr. warned me not to drive, but didn’t say anything about it affecting my mind.

  95. I have been taking 30mg 4 times per day as prescribed by my doctor. I have been on opioids for well over 10 years now and I was wondering what a fatal dose would be? I’m also prescribed hydrocodone 10/325 at 6 per day for the last 10 years or so. Sometimes the pain is too great that I chew the instant tried OC and HC but that doesn’t help much more than swallowing them does.

The doctor also prescribes diazepam 10mg prn, clonopin 2mg prn and flexeril 10mg prn.

My question is, what’s the absolute most I can take of these meds without overdosing and dying?

    Please help. Thank you!

  96. A pain clinic doc just told me that for everyone, as s rule , 5 mg of ocxcycodone gives exactly as much pain relief as 10 mg of ocxcycodone… I cannot believe this , told her so but she insists…..I checked with my personal doc and an old friend also a doc…both say she is wrong …help me understand…. Thanks she defies logic….

  97. My Dr. Was prescribing me (at first) Norco 10/325 3 times a day along with a muscle relaxer Baltran and an anti inflammatory. I suffer chronic pain I have two herniated disks and severe spinal stenosis The pain i I feel tho is in my hip is sharp, constant and have fallen numerous times the last result was a broken rib. Most of the time I literally can not walk. Just to let u know I am going to a pain management Dr.
He suggested we try something else and suggested oxycodone. My question to him was if they made that drug with no acidominifin because u was taking so much. He said yes and wrote me Oxycodone IR 3 times per day. I had no idea there ease a huge difference. I guess my question is the duration I have to spread the 3 pills out. I’m I crazy because if I wait to long to take a dose I experience stomach cramps, diarrhea and sweating. I’ve inly been in them go about two weeks. Is this possible? Or could I be experaiacing withdrawal from the Nirco I was taking before

  98. Hello & thank you for taking this time… I do not want my name published due to My Daughters Children!
Anyway, I just found a bottle date 1/7/15 Oxycodone 30 mg every 4 hours… My Daughter passed away 2/10/15… She had 2 episodes that causes Resp/cardiac arrest in nov .. Dec I read hyperphospatemia, a boat load of other medical problems, we were not aware of!! Was not told in discharge, 12/14 anyway, her Doctor knew of her Asthma & I’m not sure of his awareness of her other medical problems in the hospital , yet he was my Doctor and I told him, Did CPR nov/Dec … No testing on her back and also on clonazapam 2 mg 4 times daily!!! I’m horrified as I found he increased her dosage !! ( oxycodone) from every 6 hrs to every 4, nooo testing!!! Asthmatic , over weight & smoker!! She was only 30.. By far not a drug addict, but these were immediate release along with clonazapam!!! It has been told to me , even mixing the clonazapam with Percocet is lethal … My heart is broken, I’m trying to get to the bottom of this… Oh also I was crying In his office 2nd visit after my Daughter passed, he told me he would no longer treat me??? It’s all so shocking !!! 180 mg Percocet Daily ! With 8 mg clonazapam daily???? I feel /smell negligence !!! What do u think of the doses & combination ??

  99. been on oxycodone for about two years now 10/325 when I got my last medication filled I started to cut them in half this has been going on about two weeks now. It’s not helping my pain as well can I just go back to taking the regular dose? It’s for a bad back the reason I broke them in half was do to nausea wanted to see if this helped but didn’t.

  100. Is taking 18 35mg tablets of oxycodone per day excessive? That is 630 mg’s per day and a total of 540 tablets each month. They were prescribed for cervical spine damage, nerve damage, and scar tissue. Just wondered if there was a cap on what was TOO MUCH–objectively. Thanks

  101. i take 80mg of Oxycontin every 12 hrs, 40 mg of oxycodone 1 time in afternoon, Xanax, celexa, otc sleep pills, 15mg melatonin, ambien at night. i have 150 extra oxycodone. i smoke 2.5 packs a day and weigh 209 i have spinal stenosis (both neck and lower back) fibromylgia diabetes, neuropathy, knees and shoulder should have been replaced years ago,. i have disfiguring arthritis and legs/feet numbness in hands/feet. i also have macular degenation. would the 150 condone caude a fatal over-dose??

    1. Hello Marialyce. Given the fact that you are already taking a mix of many medications, I’d advise you to speak with your prescribing doctor before you add another one. On one hand, your tolerance to medications is quite high after taking so many different meds for such a long time, but just to be safe, do not take additional oxycodone doses unless your doctor approves.

  102. I was prescribed 1 to 2 oxycdone every 6 hours. I moly took 1 and two hours later am in pain again. Can I take the second one?

    1. Hi Esauer. You should always take your medication in the time and dose prescribed. Talk to your doctor about this issue, maybe you need a change of doses or change of medication.

  103. I have been taking oxycodone 10 mg 5 times a day for about 2 months now, and lately I have been itching like crazy, to the point that my scalp burns a little! It happens about 15 min after I take my pill.. Is that normal??

  104. I was given 360 oxycodone a month and cut off cold turkey because my x girlfriend called the dr and fed him full of crap now my dr talked with my sergeant and I told him I was not getting enough meds to cover my pain and I have sergsry Monday less then a week how will I deal with all this pain my sergeant was like deal with it I felt like blowing both he’s knees off and telling him to deal with it I told him the only thing that helped my pain was 100mg patches did not help a bit why do they not want to help me with my pain I was on patches for close to 5 years why would they want me going thru withdrawal before and after sergsry

  105. I have siactica and its really bad right now can’t sleep sit or walk so my doctor gave me perk 5/325 they didn’t work unless I took 4 at once so my doc went on vacation so I saw a different one she gave me 20 more so today after my physical therapy I saw a different fill in doc and she said I overdosed took me off them and now I suffering what should I do

    1. Hi Gil. Try massage therapy and acupuncture, over-the-counter flu and cold medications from the pharmacy. Ginger and peppermint teas can address symptoms of nausea and gastro intestinal upset, and also try hot baths, hot pads, and hot/cold creams for muscle aches. You can ask a doctor or a pharmacist for other medicines or herbal remedies that can help you lower the intensity of withdrawal symptoms at home.

  106. My husband accidentally took his days worth of oxy (6-15mlg) at once. He was packing his suitcase and normally puts all his pills out but was in a hurry because he was going to miss his flight. What should he do?

    1. Hello Marie. You can Call the Poison Control Center on 1-800-222-1222 to talk to a poison expert. They will asses the risk of potential harm and give you instructions on what to do next.

  107. I take 5 mg of Percocet. I found some of my medication in my car that was in my bottle that I thought I had lost. The problem is that they were in my car for about 2 months. It’s been below 25 degrees several times. Would that be dangerous to take them. Would you let me know if I can use them still? Thank you so much for your help. Phyllis

    1. Hi Phyllis. To my knowledge, drugs like Percocet can remain effective for quite some time. I’d advise you to be safe and check the expiration date with your pharmacist. It really depends on how they manufactures them and if they make them to last less.

  108. so i took a 30mg at like 9 or 10 am in the morning…and then around 10 pm i took anothor 30 mg my question is how long does it take to wear off like 4 hours

  109. Hi, I have a in-office procedure coming up where it is painful enough that the clinic prescribes 10 mg of vicodin along with 10 mg of valium for this procedure. I have a couple of oxycodone 5 mg tablets here at home and I am still very anxious about the pain I might experience during this procedure. I have read that the oxycodone is stronger for pain relief than the vicodin. Can I substitue the oxycodone for the vicodin and get more pain relief, or would it be safe for me to take half of the 5 mg oxycodone, the 10 mg of vicodin and the 10 mg of valium together? This is a one-time thing and I will not need any further pain relief after the procedure. I never take meds, rarely even Tylenol or Advil and I am only 115 lbs and 5.4″. Thanks for any info!

  110. I usually take 2 oxycodone pills( 325 ) when needed for pain. I think I may have mistakenly just taken 4 pills instead of the usual 2. Any danger? Thanks, Ron

  111. Hi Rick. Your tolerance levels are high, that’s why the medication no longer has the effects it used to. I cannot tell if your doctor will be willing to up your dose, but be careful not to be taken wrong…many people are completely cut off of their medications if their doctor suspects drug abuse or addiction (even though that’s not the case). If it is possible, try to slowly reduce doses, as if you are tapering down. Then, when your organism gets used to the lower dose, upping them again would provide more pain relief. If you are willing to try with your doctor, I wish you good luck!

  112. Hi there I have been on oxycodone 10mg ir first 3 times a day for a year and a half an now 5 a day for the past 6 months I have 3 bulged discs in my back but recently my disc got cut and pulled some nerves so until I can meet with a neurosurgeon to get a higher dose of meds I have been taking about 10 pills a day an a couple trips to the ER to get 2 mg shots of dulodid to get out of pain is this a lot to take my doc also gave me valium for muscle spasm but I don’t dare take them I’m a hypochondriac an fear of stopping breathing in my sleep is 10 pills a day to much an what are symptoms of to much will I be high an goofy or just be out of pain an go to sleep an not wake up please help

  113. I have been taking oxyc done quick release for 3 years started of low then building my tolerance up over the years. I have been taking anywhere from 30 to 60mg at once. A total of 120 to 260mg a day. How much is to much with quick release and a tolerance

  114. I have been on 150mg of oxycodone for 5 yrs ihave premanent nerve damage in my right leg .it is not lasting as long as used to .do you think my doctor wood me to 180 mg a day

  115. I have permanent nerve damage of the femanal nerve in my right leg . I take 30mgs of oxycodone 5x a day for the last 5 years Do you he wood up me to 6 tablets a day

  116. Hi Lisa. In case of a missed dose, there are the following medical suggestions: Since oxycodone is used when needed, you may not be on a dosing schedule. If you are on a schedule, use the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

  117. I had surgery 3 weeks ago. Before surgery I was taking (1)
5/325 Percocet as needed. After surgery I was taking 2 every 4 hours around the clock. I wasn’t getting full relief. My doctor switched me to 10mg oxycodone every 4 hours. I am not sure if I took my pill and want to know what will happen if I take another one since I can’t remember. I don’t think I’ve taken it, based on my pain but want to know what will happen if I take one and already took one.

  118. One of the side effects of taking tylenol is abdominal pain, especially near the liver-the upper-right part of the stomach, and YES, many have the same problem. But, it’s most commonly caused by taking too much tylenol. Could you not seek to take an alternative med? Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist and see if s/he might have some solution for your pain. Get well soon!

  119. Ok, thank you very much for the input….. Do you know if other people have this same problem. In reference to the pervious comment I have left? I do not want my doctor think I’m trying to pull one over on him.. I just don’t like how my stomach acts by the end of the day

  120. Hello Bob. There are other pain medications you can take, that don’t contain tylenol. One would be Oxycodone, or MS contin. Talk to your doctor to seek the best solution to your problem.

  121. I have a question I am prescribed 1-2 5mg Percocet every 4 hours. I have to take 3 of them to make the pain tolerable, 3 every 4-6 hours but taking that many through out the day makes my stomach feel crappie. Do they make percocets without tyelonl? Or maybe a 15-20mg pill that I’d only have to take 2-3 through out the day rather than 9 pills in a day?
    Thank you

  122. injured back 15 years ago. have gradually increased rx in part tolerance, also pathology has significantly worsened. i take 60 mg. oxycontin in am, and 60 mg. in pm. i also take 10mg. percocet , every 6hrs. for breakthrough pain. i weigh 237 lbs.. my pain is not under control. i fold over at the waist, after a few min. of walking. on the cusp of needing wheelchair or scooter. waiting for either sx or neurostimulator, so any higher dosage, will be temporary, i hope.

  123. Is it to much to.take 2 5-325mg oxocodone anctempine at one time when they say take 1to 2 every 4 hours as needed for pain

  124. i take oxycodone for pain management, my levels get tested weekly. average is usually 250-300
this week my results came in at 9000. that is crazy, i do not abuse my meds. is there a physical ailment such as kidneys or lliver disfunytionthat could cause this? how much would one have to consume for numbers to be that high? seems like that level i would be dead or in a coma, ???? pls help me

P.S. i also take tramadol and lorazapam and once in a while trazadone for sleep disorder

  125. First let me say I belong to kaiser, that may or may not make a difference. I’m currently taking 90 mg a day of immediate release oxycodone. I’ve been diagnosed w/degenerative disc & joint disease and I’m in constant pain. My dr wants me to go to PT. I’ve gone b4, but it actually makes my pain worse. I take 15mg’s 6 x’s per day orally but find that after about 2 hrs my pain is coming back and I have to take another one in between doses which leaves me short & in withdrawal every month. My dr doesn’t believe my diagnoses should be causing so much pain but everybody is different. I have a low tolerance for pain and a high tolerance to opiates. It seems like my dr is more concerned about her license than she is about helping me manage my pain. Is there anything I can say which is medically sound or any steps I can take administrativly to get either a higher dose or something for breakthrough pain?
Please send me a reply. I’ve posted questions on this site before and have never gotten an answer or comment. Maybe I’m doing something wrong and nobody is seeing my posts…idk, hope to hear something back soon.
    Thank u

  126. Hello Anna. It depends on your level of tolerance to oxycodone. Of course mixing depressants is never a good idea. But, you’ll probably be fine.

  127. I took 10mg of oxycodone this morning at 7am and than another 10mg at 3pm. Then at 3;30 pm had a 4 oz glass of wine with a late lunch with my husband. I then realized that the pill bottle said do not drink alcohol. Should I be worried now?

  128. What is better to do? one tablet of 10 mg every 4 hours or two every 6 hours? back surgery (kyfoplasticy) recovery. Goal : to get off these pills

  129. I’ve been recently prescribed endone for a major toothache but lately the effects of one tablet ha sent done much I was prescribed 1x5mg tablet every six hours but sometimes the frequency is 2 – 3 in 12 hours I know it’s silly for doing it but how great are the dangers bearing in mind the effects don’t seem to be that strong anymore

  130. My question is, do I have to take the suboxon? I mean is it mandatory, or shld I have an option to take it or stay on my normal pain meds? I’ve been doing alot of reading and it seems the withdrawal from suboxon is way worse than from the oxycodone. If I must be dependant on something, which it seems is the case with my pain, I would rather it be something I know works and how my body reacts to it. In my previous post, my dr has me takung 4 5mg oxycodone 5 times a day (gave me over 500 5mg oxy), instead of just giving me 180 20mg oxycodone to take 1 pill 5 times a day. I dont get it, now suboxon…..maybe I shld change dr’s….idk. I go to the docs about the suboxon on friday. We’ll see how it goes.

  131. Does taking four 5mg immediate release oxycodone work the same as taking one 20mg controlled release oxycodone. Im wondering why my dr wld want to give me 500 5mg oxycodone to take 5 times a day instead of giving me 180 20mg oxycodone 4 times a day. It just doesnt make sense. Im with kaiser and they say the only have 5mg in their formulary but I know people who get 30mg oxycodone from kaiser, so are they lying to me or am I misunderstanding something?

  132. Hi Ali. I’d suggest you speak to your prescribing doctor or to a pharmacist. Those medical proffesionals that can help you treat the unwanted symptoms or give you some guidence, or change the dosages, so you won’t be getting any side-effects from your meds.

  133. Hello. I was just prescribed Percocet (oxycodone and tylenol) for a long term hip problem. I have been prescribed oxycodone before, but never had a problem with it. The pills I am taking are 10mg Oxy and 325mg Tylenol. I am prescribed 3 every day at noon for the pain. I took my first dosage today, and am having terrible nausea, but all of my pain is gone. I ate a normal breakfast and lunch, and felt great before and for the first hour after. It’s been almost 12 hours since I’ve taken them and I still feel terrible. Is it possible that my dosage is too much? I’m 5’8″ and 95 pounds, so I’m small for a 19 year old. The last time I was on Oxycodone, it was 2 10mg pills every 4-6 hours as needed, and I usually only took them twice a day. Is it possible that the tylenol could be setting on the nausea? I have never had a bad reaction to Oxy before, so I am concerned that maybe my doctor prescribed me too much this time.

  134. My husband has been taking 180 oxycodone APAP for two years in addition to Gabapentin 120 pills per month for pain. He has a history of addiction with multiple relapses. He is an anesthesiologist, has spinal stenosis which he says causes debilitating pain, and gets his pills from a pain doc. He has lost significant weight, smokes, has a history of family heart disease, is on anti hypertension meds. as well. I know the risks involve liver damage and respiratory depression, does chronic use exacerbate. this?

  135. This is a short story of my first encounter with the opiate Oxycodone (partially synthesized chemical therein found in poppies). At the time I had experiences with drugs such as weed, mushrooms, minor painkillers and muscle relaxants.

Me alone in my house at nineteen years old (2009) and I decide to ingest two Oxycontin 40mg pills (Oxycontin is a brand name). These pills do not contain NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) and because they are twelve hour extended release the combination makes them quite potent. As I grind 80mg worth of Oxycontin with my teeth into powder I read “Do NOT crush or chew” on the unmarked pill bottle. I mistakingly assume that these drugs are like the Vicodin I had taken before, where the bottle says take two and I can take up to six. Within thirty minutes of swallowing the Oxycontin I became very ill, was bed ridden and experienced large amounts of pain if I attempted to move. I was overheating at dangerous rates and understood that if I didn’t control the temperature my body would shut down. I couldn’t take a cold shower because it would throw my body into shock. Luckily this was a cold windy night so I opened the windows in the house, turned on the air-conditioner, and started all the fans. I stripped and fell asleep to suppress the pain (which is really bad because I could stop breathing in my sleep), only to wake five hours later throwing up. The drugs are now completely in my body and I fall back asleep. In my pain I woke up not too long after and I spent the next two days recovering. Besides the constant pain my skin had become very pale, my eyes were swollen, I was shaking, my breathing was depressed, and I had trouble functioning in daily activities. The amount of Oxycontin taken for a first time alone is considered a lethal dose, but with the addition of chewing the pills I’m not quite sure how I survived. Because I survived I felt like every other invincible teen, but now I have a huge tolerance to Oxycontin. Weeks later I’m snorting these pills and diving deeper into the dark world of drugs. This life style went on for almost two more years before I completely stopped taking harmful drugs. Now in 2014 I’m back in school and all that stuff is in the past. So hopefully my little story will help others understand the potency of Oxycodone and that it should not be underestimated.

  136. I did get another drug test done at a local hospital that my rheumatologist ordered for me. It also came back positive for oxycodone and opiates. I have had no medication for pain since the VA Dr stopped it. As I said before, I took 7 1/2 mg in the am, 7 1/2 mg in the afternoon and 15 mg at bedtime. Total of 30 mg per day. I did not take more than was prescribed and have never abused any of my medications. This Dr insisted that I must have gone outside the VA to another Dr because I should not have tested positive. My question was….have other patients tested positive at this 30 mg dose per day. Is that so unusual since it was oxycodone and that is an opiate. I am going to fight this because as I get older and my condition worsens I am scr*wed by the system for my pain meds since he stopped them. Please let me know about this particular dosage.
    Thank you.

  137. So my doctor put me on oxycodone 5mg taking 25 Mgs a day and been on this for last 4months and now she just stopped it and refused to give me a new refill because I missed her appt. Stupid, right?! That’s what I get for having a PA doctor. But, what I’m wondering is: am I going to have withdraw symptoms? I only have enough left for 3 days so, I’m kinda worried. If I’m going to withdraw I heard it’s bad and don’t want to go through that. I’m not an addict but don’t know anything about how much you have to be taking not to withdraw.

  138. Hi Kandi. You can Call the Poison Control Center on 1-800-222-1222 for a free and over-the phone assessment of the risk of overdose. You can talk to a poison expert on what to do next. If the situation gets worse Call 911.

  139. My boyfriend swallowed at least 18-20 5mg perks like around 430am maybe 5am this morning… is he in any major danger? He has been sleeping all day n woke up just recently and ate a tiny bit of food but had to sit due to almost collapsing. Now he is back out.. he hasn’t taken any perks in a few months..what can I do??

  140. I am 5’7″ 135pds.
I Am Prescribed 6-8 roxicodone daily at 30mg.
I Am also prescribed 2 ER OXYCONTIN at 80mg 2 times per day.
This is a dosage for 3yrs now.
I recently needed a “coma” panel blood test.
My number came back at 520.
Is this a normal number for what I am prescribed. My physic. And taking my regular dosages daily for 3yrs.?

Plz answer asap. I am going on vacation and need this information as I do not understand any of it.

    Thank you.

  141. My 83 year old father is on 15 mgs 3 times a day, plus Xanax and other meds for high blood pressure. I was there when a physician told him that was to much and he should not have been put on it long term. Several years now. His pain clinic doc says he needs it. My concern is he is still driving while taking it…Should I be worried?

  142. Awi, I take suboxone which is an opiate blocker and constipates “the c**p outta you”. I, having been a past pain med recipient, avoid the constipation by eating activia yogurt and high fiber cereal. Activia truly does help tremendously.

  143. Question? Since Oxycodone like Morphine causes severe constipation especially after surgery since I have to take so much of it to relieve the pain, what can I do to prevent developing intestinal ileus, which happened to me after my Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome surgery, which resulted in a 7 day hospitalization. Severe pain after surgery is a given and these are the kinds of meds used to relieve that severity of pain, so please help. I have to have another surgery for the same problem.

  144. Hello Sheila. Sometimes administrative mistakes happen during drug testing! I’d suggest that you request a second testing of your urine sample; clinics generally have a procedure for such cases so that secondary testing confirms the first results. Otherwise, it’s possible that your sample was mixed with someone else’s.

  145. In March a Dr. at the Veterans Hospital changed my pain med from Percocet 5mg 3 X daily to Oxycodone 15 mg 2 X daily. I was told to take 7mg in am and 7 mg in the afternoon and 15 mg at bedtime. This change was made as I had built up a tolerance to the Percocet over the years. I have had fusions in my neck and back and have radiculopathy and neuropathy. I now also have rheumatoid arthritis. My rheumatologist put me on Methotrexate. I was doing much better. Two weeks ago that Dr. tested my urine. I was not concerned as I have had lots of urine tests over the years. The test came back positive for oxycodone and also positive for opiates. He immediately stopped my pain meds and said I must be getting them elsewhere also because the amount he gave me would not show up the opiates. I have been in the VA system for over 36 yrs, am 62 yrs old and have never gotten any meds other than what they have prescribed. I have been in so much pain but all I can do is start with my patient advocate and complain. I talked to the pharmacist there and was told some people test positive on this dosage and some don’t. I have always been compliant with all instructions from my doctors and I just couldn’t believe this. Can you give me any info regarding testing positive for opiates on this so called low dose? I can’t afford to go out to a pain management hospital as I am on a limited income. Guess all I can do is fight it and hope someone believes me. Any help you can give me will be appreciated. Thank you.

  146. Im on 15 oxy 5s and like 4 oxycontin time releaae Jus to take my broken neck pain away an Jus now startintto feel a bit wooZy was that enough to overdose¿¿¿

  147. Hi Carol. You may be physically dependent on oxycodone – but this is different than addiction. Check in with your prescribing doctor to discuss issues with an increase in your tolerance and possible alternatives. Best to you.

  148. I have been taking oxycodone for years for chronic pain. My Dr. perscibed 10 mg 3x a day but I only take half of one tablet in the morning to help with the pain when i wake up. I do not want to take it any more that day if I can help it. Can I become addicted to oxycodone if I am taking only 5 mg in 24 hours?? Thank you, Carol

  149. I am taking 1 percocet for sleep once a night.It says I can have 1 every 4 hours..I started with 40 pills and I have 25 left. . when I finish that will I be addicted?

  150. I don’t understand taking 1 oxycodone (30mg) every 6 hers and telling my doctor for going on 3 years now, that I’m still in excruciating pain. He says that I’m at the highest limit and he cannot increase it. I’m never been on to take medications of any kind, until being struck on the head with about 60 labs from a height of 50 feet. I was paralyzed for 4 days and have TBI, 3 mini strokes, herniated disc in my neck all the way to my lumbar, including angular tears in my spine and much more. What the hell does it take to be pain free? I just want my life back and they say I will never work again. Does pot work? If so, I’ll move to a legalized state if that is what it takes. I have no quality of life. 3/4 of my time is in pain in bed, Any advice from anyone? I’ve never been a pill taker and against illegal drug use all my life, but I’m starting to read and explore ways to be pain free.

  151. Had severe acc’d in 2006. Damaged left foot and ankle, but no break. Went thru numerous tests. Some were very painful. Dx-RSD. Dr. wanted to implant pain pump being a nurse(that at this point has lost my job) i said no. Put on various diff drugs, but nothing helped. As a last result went to pain management. I am so pain weary I wonder why I’m still here. got talked into a neuro- implant after some good result from the trial implant. For some reason the permanent implant is not working the same. This was the fourth sx in 5 months with him. He is prescribing percocet 5/325mg bid. I have never abused any drug and I don’t understand why he won’t prescribe a higher dose or diff drug. I use the programer different amts of time to try to come to a higher relief. The implant only gives me about 10-20% relief. I tasted heaven with that trial and absolutely do not understand this. I am even more limited as to what I am able to do. I also have interstitial cysitis that is so disabling at times the pain is so bad I can’t get in a comfortable position not to mention practically living in the br. On top of that I was dx bipolar 2yrs ago. How do I find a dr that isn’t afraid to prescribe pain meds. I ‘m at the end of my rope between the severe pain and feeling like I’m nuts. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

  152. I have been prescribed 5mg oxycodone for back pain and I only take it if I am having a really hard time moving as I don’t really like taking pills. My question is, I was in pain and got distracted by my kids and accidentally took two of them at the same time. Should I be worried?

  153. Hello Jody. This is a question for your prescribing doctors and/or a pharmacist who have a more detailed view of your medical history.

  154. I went to pain management they gave me for first time 60 mg er Oxycontin morning afternoon 20 mg then night 60 mg midnight 20 mg is that safe and why am i still in pain

  155. Hello James. Hmmmm. It’s possible. What do your instincts tell you? Can you self-analyze and observe how you feel before, during, and after therapeutic effect wears off?

  156. I’ve been taking 2-3 5/325mg oxy a day for a year or so now and probably will continue for the rest of my life. I’m told by those around me that my mood is elevated when I’m on the pills. That has me wondering, is my boost in spirit due to the medication or the reprieve from pain? Thank you.

  157. I’ve been prescribed 5mg instant release for long term pain from a motorcycle accident. Sometimes it hurts so much I’ll take 150mbs. I’m also taking clonazepam 1mg every four hours

  158. I have been on endone 5mg 4 times a day for around 4 years. I feel tired all of the time and am sick of these pills, however, I am frightened of the withdrawal from the drug. What is thye worst that can occur. I am in my sixties

  159. Hello Dolly. Thanks for your questions.

    1. Your doctors and pharmacist can best advise on dosage and frequency of dosing. But for multiple surgeries and pain, the dosing seems on target for an opioid dependent person.

    2. Tapering depends on the person. You’ll need a personalize tapering calendar from your prescribing doctor before you start to cut back on these medications. But 25% per month is a nice, gradual taper.

    3. Tapering slowly as suggested should not really result in symptoms until the last month, when you may experience the more uncomfortable symptoms of nausea, headache, and mood swings (or other symptoms). But, again, the severity of withdrawal is highly individual and with a very conservative tapering regime, you may pass through this phase without too much discomfort.

  160. 1. I have been on Oxycontin for 10years at a dose of 80 mg timed release one tablet 2 times per day, and Roxicet 15 mg one tablet 3 times a day for breakthrough medication. Is this logical for surgeries and 15 fusions in my back, that I have gone through ?
    2. Also if to be reduced should this be reduced at a rate of 25% per month on both medications at once? to finish in four months?
    3. What would the reactions be at that fast paced rate of removal?

  161. Ok my pain management doctor prescribed me 10mg oxycontin every 8 hours plus 5 mg Oxycodone IR every 6 hours for breakthru. I usually take 1 10mg in the morning with 2 IR’s and then 2 IR every 6 hours for a total of 1 10mg oxycontin and 8 5mg oxycodone IR. I ran out of my oxycodone IR. I was in extreme pain took 1 10mg then took another about an hour later. Still no pain relief so waited for 8 hours and took 1 more 10mg. waited another 2 hours and took another. still no relief. Finally took the fifth around 15 hours after the first dose. Is that too much. I figured i was taking 50 MG of oxy a day so it wouldn’t hurt me. Still no pain relief but I am freaking out

  162. I have been taking oxcodone 10 mg 3 x a day for the past 5 years for a shoulder problem. I have noticed that after a weeks there is some sort of cycle my body goes through where I become very tired, and sleep for like 20 hours. I know it might be withdrawl symptoms, but does anyone else deal with this sort of thing? Sleep disorder, unable to stay awake.

  163. Hello Nabb. This is a question best suited for a pharmacist. I’d suggest that you make a visit or phone call to learn more about the side effects of OxyContin and edema. You can also search in your internet browser for: OxyContin adverse side effects.

    Good luck!

  164. I have a question which is dosage related which is not exactly the topic and would appreciate any answers.

Do Oxycodone or Oxycontin cause any type of edema? I’ve been on 6x30mg a day for over a year for 4 herniated cervical discs, facet problems and all sorts of other things and managed to reduce it to 4x30mg for a few months. Then my condition got aggravated and I went back to 5-6 x 30mg a day but for whatever reason which I don’t think is true, the pharmacy told me that Florida only allowed 120mg. per day and that patients needed to take other things such as time release versions or morphine etc.., and that while the doctors got a slap on the hands for not abiding with the law, the pharmacists were the ones who were losing their licenses over it with the pretense that “you guys should know drug interactions better than anyone and those amounts are too high”. I don’t find it credible as telling me to take Oxycontin or morphine or even methadone is not actually reducing my usage. The pharmacies are always out of Oxycodone and get very limited amounts and I believe that by not giving out more than 120 per month to certain people, the pharmacies are managing to have more Oxycodone to dispense to multiple patients. Well if that is the case, then it sucks for people like me who actually depend on it since nothing else works as does Oxycodone.

Anyway, as a result, my prescription was changed to 4x30mg per day plus 2x40mg Oxycontin to be taken 12 hours apart. While I had to literally count the minutes to my next dosage since the Oxycodone is very short acting, with the Oxycontin, I actually have to set my alarm to remind me it’s time for the Oxycodone. At 3.5 hours, my body would start shivering slowly and then I would have waves of neck pain start to come at around 4 hours. If I didn’t take it before 4.5 hours, the pain would remain until about the next time that I took a pill. With the Oxycontin I can last 6-7 hours without pain and that’s great as I intend to reduce the Oxycodone to 3 pills a day soon (after I speak with my doctor about it).

However I noticed I am getting extremely irritating ankle and foot aches as well as edema which is clearly visible around the ankles. Since I can’t find any information about swelling due to opiates, I wanted to ask if there was a way that the Oxycontin or the mixture of Oxycodone and Oxycontin may be the culprit. I have used Oxycodone for over 2 years and I have never ever had even a single side effect while the anke swelling started within 10-15 days of me starting on the Oxycontin and it’s there almost every day.

    Thank you for your help.

  165. Hi Peter. From what I understand, effects of oxycodone wear off within 4-6 hours for the immediate release and 12 hours for extended release. However, check in with the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 or your local pharmacist for confirmation.

  166. Hi William. As long as you have a prescription to present to the Medical Review Officer and the urinalysis shows expected levels of oxycodone in your system, a therapeutic level of Percocet will be reported as NEGATIVE for abuse.

Jill – This is a question for a toxologist or Medical Review Officer.

  167. I am currently taking percocett 10mg as precribe by my doctoe been taking them fro 2 years had an randon drug test today by work, Do I have to worry about my job/s?

  168. If one takes to much Oxycodone and becomes unconscious but then recovers, what is the likelihood of that person suffering permanent damage to an organ?

I have a friend whose 5 year old had leukemia. She was mistakenly given 100 mg/5ml instead of 1mg/ml. She was rushed to the ER and recovered but the parents wonder about the long term effects.

    Thank you,
    Pat Nolan

  169. I take 30 mg of OxyContin every 8 hours and two 5mg tablets of Oxycodone every 4 hours as needed ( usually about 8 tablets a day).
I have Prostate cancer that has spread to my bones. I was going to try to go on disability but don’t think I can handle it financially. So I have to go back to work. I have been off for about 5 months. My job involves driving. The vehicles are usually no larger than a pickup truck. I don’t feel encumbered by my medication. But will the company doctor feel that way? What is a safe level of my medication for work?

  170. My grandson took Oxycodenie. He got it from a man who got it from a gynecologist per the bottle I saw!! 180 pills was the original prescription. In other words illegal. He wanted to finish college. I stayed with him for 6 weeks chasing apparent drug dealers, taking him to classes, not out of my site. I believe he got clean. He could not get a job and eventually moved back home. He has ot been able to get a job in spite of being a straight A student in high school and being a bright, happy boy. Now at 26, he is a loser don’t know if he is on anything or not. I think his btrain is burned out. He paces. Comes into my house and practically runs across the room, stops suddenly, shakes his head, and opens the fridge door closes it quickly and starts to pace rapidly. He has difficulty focusing, sometimes looks like he is shaking his head in order to clear Gorges food, can put down a big plate of food in seconds. . Stays up all night can’t sleep, has deep dark circles around his eyes. I ask for help around the house,in order for him to “earn” money, he can;t stay focused long enough to complete a task, often says what did you say., If I say put this in the back room, he will head to the back room without the object. Stand back there, then turn around looking puzzled. Breaks my heart. What is wrong? How can I help him? MD Psychiatrist? resident facility? government help? I am a senior on fixed income. Thanks soooo much.

  171. Hello Audrey. Check in with your pharmacist and/or prescribing doctor. Usually, an NSAID for break through pain will be OK but it depends on the dose amount and frequency.

  172. I broke 3 ribs and the pain is really bad. I have been given a prescription for 10 mg of oxycodone to be taken 12 hours apart. About half way through the 12 hours I have very bad pain. Would it be harmful to take 2 Tylenol as a break through med around noon. I will be in pain for about 6 weeks. I am used to taking Ty 3’s so I am hoping it will be ok. Today was dreadfully painful when the oxycodone wore off. Thank you. I will be watching for your answer. Audrey Taylor

  173. Hello kasey. Smoking oxycodone does deliver the opioid to the brain faster. But in terms of effectiveness, oral ingestion is definitely preferred. Smoking opioids can be a sign of drug abuse, so I’d suggest that you schedule an appointment with him and his prescribing doctor to air out your concerns. It will help to have a clear idea of what are the best practices, how he might be able to temporarily lower his tolerance, and what a long-term pain management plan can look like.

I wish you and your husband the best of health!

  174. My hubby has been dealing with bad back problems for a few years now, he has 4 herniated disks in his lower spine and a few other problems i have trouble pronouncing (sciatica), anyways after working is way up the pain pill ladder starting at vicoden, norco, he is now on these oxycodone 30 mgs. His doctor has him taking 1 and a half (1 1/2) every 4 hours. I guess she upped him the half because the pain was getting worst because his tolerance was going up. These are immediate release because he doesn’t like the long acting ones. This means he is taking around 250- + a day and that seems like alot to me? is that something i should worry about. Also even more scary recently i found that he was inhaling his medication, because he says it helps his pain faster? He is trying to convince me that inhaling it is better for you, and there is less of a chance of overdosing so he is able to take more?! This is absolutely wrong correct?? Is it easier to overdose inhaling this medication then taking it orally? Im really worried about him, he claims they do not effect his brain or make him high, that it just helps his pain but his dose is just getting higher and higher and now he is smoking them and ihave never heard of this, any info would be much appreciated!

  175. Hi Sheryl. If you’re too drowsy taking oxycodone, this is definitely a sign that you might consider an alternative. Before approaching your doctor, try to consult with a pharmacist. Pharmacists generally have more time and specific knowledge about opioid alternatives, and can spend time explaining to you your options. Then, you can approach your prescribing physician with and informed approach.

  176. I’ve been prescribed oxycondone 5 mg and 10 mg. They don’t do anything for the pain but just make me sleepy. Of course in those doses the prescription by the pharmacy can only be generic and not brand. Does that mean I need to check out a different med? I need to work and take the edge off the pain, and so it would be nice to be awake and functioning. I just don’t know what drug to try next. Demerol worked as a sleeping pill as did Norco and some patch whose name escapes me at the moment. The only one that worked in the past was the Vicodin, but since they changed the formulation, it no longer works unless I want to take something else with it and resign myself to kidney and/or liver dysfunction.

  177. This is a great site. Thank you…I am on medication and it scares me but am waiting for surgery. I have been on these garbage scary pain pill for two years and they keep prolonging the surgery. Lately I have been having a dull pain under my right rib cage. Plus, memory loss. Hope to get off them soon. Thank you for the information.

  178. My husband has torn cartilage in knee, they gave him 5mg percocet starting about 2 months ago he takes 3 times a day mostly once a week maybe 4 as his job has him on his feet 10 hours a day. Well he received a cortisone shot to the knee and this seems to be helping with pain we want to start dosing down asap, I have been administering his pills as he tends to have addition tendencies. We have no insurance and see a community doctor, they are over booked always so getting a down dosing schedule is close to impossible. If you could give a suggestion it would be greatly appreciated Thank you, also what if the shot in the knee doesn’t hold the pain down is it a problem to go up again if necessary thanks

  179. Hello Tracy. DO NOT increase frequency of use without consulting your daughter’s prescribing physician. The break through pain may be treated by increasing dose amount instead of frequency…but you need medical advice before changing oxycodone doses (it’s illegal to up dose amount or frequency yourself).

  180. My daughter had bunion repair surgery and experience a lot of pain….we are in the first 48 hours….supposed to take 5-10mg of oxycodone every 3-4 hours but has breakthrough pain that tylenol is not helping with. Can she take a dose a little earlier than the 3 hours if this happens? Like at 2 hours?

  181. Hi Jamie. How many pills are prescribed at a time? If you are taking as prescribed, you should need a refill of 100 pills every 12 days, or so.

  182. my coment is this my pcp is giving me take 2 5/325 percocets every 6 hours, I take them just as that no more but the thing is I feel like I’m doing something wrong when I call back every 12 days for more pills, acording to my math they should last 7.5 days right? or am I wrong. Sometimes At night I only take one thats why I call evry 12 days. Is the math right?

  183. Hi Ron. After repeated, daily dosing of OxyContin … your body will develop physical dependence on oxycodone, which means that you will go through withdrawal symptoms when you discontinue use. This does not, however, mean that you will necessarily become addicted to OxyContin. However, you might ask for alternative pain medications which do not contain opioids, opiates, or other narcotic pain relievers if you want to avoid a potentially uncomfortable detox when you stop.

  184. I had major wrist surgery. My guess i will be in pain for several months as it was a SL full tear . 3 month of PT. Is it safe to take one or 2 5mg of oxycodone a day or one xycontin 20mg 12 our release for 2 or 3 months straight? I do take Aderall for ADHD and Lamictal for Bi-polar 2 and my orthopedic knows this.

  185. Hi Liz. Don’t worry. Here’s what it means on the label.

    5 mg hcl = hydrochloride
5 mg imm rel = immediate release

They are the same chemical (oxycodone) in different packaging.

  186. I got an order for oxycodone 5mg po one tab po bid prn. This first time I got from the pharmacy it said on the pill bottle oxycodone 5mg hcl, now this time I went to a different pharmacy and bottle says oxycodone 5mg imm rel, are they the same? the look different and thicker, I know different pharmacy companies manufacture them and they have different writting? Im scared they are not the same.

  187. Hi Ron. Not a lot is known about the long term use of opioids in pain management, and its effects on the liver. It’s true that opioids complete most of their primary metabolism int he liver, so therefore, it makes sense that long term use would impact the liver. But I haven’t been able to find any research on this question, yet.

In terms of dosing…oxycodone does slow breathing and slow the heart. Are you prescribed the two (2) doses of oxycodone at the same time, or to be taken separately? And what does your prescribing doctor say about dosing at night?

  188. I have to take two 5mg/325 actem everyday. I usualy take them in the evening so it can relieve my pain when i am asleep. could this be fatal if done for a long period of time? will my liver suffer from this dailey dose..can my heart stop when i am asleep? or am i just over reacting? I am male 6 foot 220lbs and i am in the gym every day.

  189. Hi kyon. So you’re concerned about the mental health symptoms that the pills seem to have provoked? Well, oxycodone DOES act on the psycho-emotional self and can affect feelings as well as the way we think. It is possible that the stress of the surgery itself has created these feelings. I’d suggest that you see a doctor as soon as possible to describe the symptoms and to seek possible pain relief alternatives.

  190. hi
i had a surgery on my knee and for med take gave me oxocodfine. it said to take 1 to 2 every 3 hours. and the lady who prescribed these to my mother asked if i was a big boy she said yea, shes like then give him 2 every 3 hour. i got surgery on a wed took pills for wed thuesday friday then sat morning i took my first pill of that morning, then afterwards i started panicking for no reason crying, anxious, depressed. my stomach groelling for no reason. like for an hour i was ok then after all of them wud bother me in different ways. i stopedd taking the pills the second i the side effects. today is monday, been 3 days sence i took last pill, shudnt everything be out my systerm now cause i styll get worried then cry cause i keep thinking mentaly wrong. they prescribed 30 pills in 2 and half i took 30 cause of the pain.
is my body reacting like this because of this side effects? if yes how lonf well it take to wear off wen its already been 3 full days?
    thank you much

  191. Hi Danny. The answer is – they don’t know yet. Long term studies on oxycodone are few but you can track them by searching for the following keyword terms in your internet browser: oxycodone “long term” effects

Also, what does your prescribing doctor say about your concerns about your stomach? Also, if constipation is a problem be sure to take fiber supplements or eat tons of fruits and veg – constipation can lead to significant problems such as hemorrhoids in the future.

  192. Hello. How long can a person take this? I’ve had one back surgery and now bone spurs in my neck. I’ve been taking 4 a day for the last 6 years. Every year when I have all my yearly stuff done my liver is fine. What about the stomach? If something was wrong would it show up in blood test? Can you take this for years and years. I must work and cannot miss work. Thanks

  193. Hi Martin. Thanks for your question. I hope that you are doing well in your recovery from a severe broken leg. That sounds very difficult.

It sounds like you were taking enough oxyocodone over the 10 day period that you have developed physical dependence on oxycodone and are going through withdrawal. This is totally normal and an expected course in opioid pain medication treatment. The symptoms of opioid withdrawal usually peak 72 hours AFTER YOUR LAST DOSE. If the symptoms become unmanageable, seek medical advice and ask for alternative treatments that can help minimize the discomfort. Symptoms can linger for about a week, or so, after last dose. But you should be through the worst of it after the first three days.

    Does that help?

  194. Hello.
I was givn oxycodone hcl for pain releif for my severe leg fracture..intructions say i can take 1 to 2 pills every 4 hrs as needed…for the first few days i was taking 2 as directed..then eased off over the past 10 day to eventually 1 every 6-8 hrs….now i havent taken one in the last 24hrs…but the side effects of hot/ cold sweats and cold clammy skin are still there. How long should it take for these side effects to ware off?
    Thank you for your help

  195. Hi Johnny. Thanks for your question. Oxycodone stays in your system and can be detected in a urine screen for about 1-3 days after last use. It will be helpful to get the paperwork from the hospital about the prescription they gave you, but it would also be helpful that you disclose using your girlfriend’s Percocet RX, as well. I know that it’s difficult, but honesty is the best policy, especially if you are on probation for drug related issues.

  196. i have question i need a good answer to how long does it take for oxycodone to leave the system i had to go to the hospital for my back cuz i wrecked my dirtbike and that was three or four days ago on a wed afternoon at 12pm they gave me shot and a perc not sure the mg so it is now sunday 3am when the doc sent me home he fave me acouple different meds to get at the pharmacy but they were non narcotic and they werent helping the pain so my girlfriend had some perc 10 325s and ive been taking them i have probation meeting monday at 930am i dont know if they r gonna test me the paperwork from the hospital says nun about the perc they gave me so ive been takin the percs now from wed 3pm to sun 1am i have probation at 930am monday will i be clean or will i test positive and if so should i go to the hospital and ask them for sum paperwork that says they gave a perc while i was there so basically i have been takin 6 perc 10/325s for three and a half days will and i got one and a quarter days hope u can make sense of all this please get back to me thank you very much
