Tramadol overdose: How much amount of tramadol to OD?

It’s very difficult to overdose or OD on tramadol. But even at lower doses, tramadol can cause serious health problems. More on how much amount of tramadol is safe for you and tramadol overdose here.

minute read

It depends.

The amount of tramadol that can cause tramadol overdose varies greatly by person and their exposure to opiates or opioids. And how much tramadol is safe also depends on individual opiate tolerance, as well as mode of administration.  for example, snorting tramadol effects are more dangerous than taking tramadol orally.  If you take tramadol regularly, can you prevent an unintentional tramadol overdose? In this article, we’ll explore how much tramadol it takes to OD along with the risk factors for tramadol overdose. At the end, we invite your questions about tramadol and overdose.

Tramadol overdose – How much is too much?

The amount of tramadol which can provoke overdose depends on your previous exposure to opioids. How long does tramadol stay in the system? Tramadol has a half life of about 6 hours, but can be detected for days after use.  But, if your body is already tolerant to tramadol, opiates, or opioids, you can take more tramadol safely. However, safe doses will vary between different strengths and formulas of tramadol. And if tramadol is mixed with other medications, such as acetaminophen, it can be much easier to overdose on the secondary active ingredient. There are some basic guidelines you can follow to safely take tramadol.

At 500 mg, you can begin to experience severe side effects such as seizures. However, tramadol overdose doesn’t actually occur unless you take between 2.65 and 8.2 grams, which is about 5-18 times the recommended maximum daily dosage. You may end up in the hospital if you take 500 mg of tramadol, but you probably won’t die. Further guidelines for tramadol dosing follow:

Opiate naive patients – For example, a doctor will start out an opioid-naпve patient at only 25 mg at a time, and no more than 100 mg in one day. This is to avoid potential side effects rather than to prevent overdose.

Opiate tolerant patients – Once you’ve developed a tolerance for opiates and opioids, you will probably have to have your dosage increased – but you should never start taking more tramadol without medical supervision. As doctors increase doses to accommodate patient tolerance, they consider a number of different variables, including your age, weight, general health, and any other medications you might be taking. The safe dose of tramadol varies greatly from person to person. In individuals with an opiate, opioid or synthetic opiate tolerance, 450 mg is the maximum recommended daily dosage for tramadol.

How does unintentional tramadol overdose happen?

You might accidentally take too much tramadol for a variety of reasons. You may not be getting adequate pain relief from your prescribed dose after using it for an extended period and developing a tolerance to tramadol. If you increase the amount or the frequency at which you take it, it’s easy to unintentionally overdose on tramadol. Getting “high” on tramadol is another way that accidental overdose occurs, particularly since this takes larger amounts of the drug than are normally prescribed. In fact, you’re much more likely to overdose when you chew, crush, snort or inject tramadol pills. Tramadol abuse greatly increases the risk of death and overdose. This medication should only be taken swallowed as a whole pill, and only in the doses recommended by your doctor.

Tramadol overdose complications

The most dangerous complication of tramadol overdose is slow or shallow breathing. Tramadol overdose can even cause your breathing to stop completely. Other medications combined with the tramadol may also cause overdose, or make these effects more pronounced.

Tramadol overdose prognosis

Since it’s pretty difficult to overdose on tramadol, recovery is probable after an OD. If you’ve taken a high dose of tramadol and experience adverse side effects, prognosis and recovery without long term damage is possible if breathing has not been compromised. During these more serious cases of tramadol overdose, doctors may administer oxygen to help you breath better. But to be clear: Tramadol overdose can be deadly. Furthermore, the lack of oxygen reaching your brain due to depressed breathing can cause permanent brain damage. Luckily, it’s hard to accidentally take this much tramadol.

Tramadol overdose death rate

Unintentional deaths by overdose are unfortunately on the rise among all opiate medications; there’s been a nationwide increase in the use of painkillers. The misuse and abuse of tramadol by recreational drug users accounts for a large portion of the increase in drug poisoning and drug deaths. However, prescriptions for higher doses of tramadol also increase the risk of overdose or serious health problems.

  1. I once took 2500mg tramadol in one time. Started to sweat heavily, hart was bouncing hard and I felt stoned during 2 days but nothing worse happened. Never took opiates before…
Won’t advice anyone to do the same thing.

  2. I take 25 mg four times a day for neurogenic cough. It is the first medicine that has worked in 6+ years. I have been taking it for four months. Although it hasn’t eliminated that cough, it is 70% better. I can actually function in a social setting, eat without choking and work like a normal person. I have no need to increase the dose also far. My questions: 1) is this a safe dose? 2) how long can I safely stay on it 3) will this cause me to be an addict?

  3. If a.person is.using opiods 500 ml and also 210.6 ml of tramadol…would that person show.signs of being in distress

  4. Hello…i took tramadol slow release 600mg as a single dose and feeling so much pain in my chest and kidney for 2 weeks now.what could be the possible effects and what should i do?
    Please help me,thank you

  5. 52 years old, never had ny issues with drugs or alcohol. Took Tramadol for pain once and did not help. But I noticed I just felt better. Have been on different anti depressants nothing seemed to make a difference. When I started Tramadol I felt normal again. Back to my old self. Studied it and realized it is the SNRI properties that re helping. Taking up to 2000 mg a day, usually 400 mg x 5 slowly increasing over years. No problems, I don’t drink or do any other drugs. I know I can’t do this forever. Can they do the rapid detox with this? I own a number of businesss and can’t be feeling crappy for a long time. I want off – I know it’s not going to be fun, but I will say – this helped me through some rough times. It’s a shame they can’t somehow separate the SNRI component. I tried Cymbalta, closest anti dep, did nothing. Suggestions on rapid detox?

    1. I take 900 mg a day orally. 300mg × 3. Give or take a few extra pills. I’m desperate to get off these pills.

  6. In response to Karen August 2018,
I have been banging my head against the wall for a couple of days now… I noticed this morning…it is starting to make a bloody spot on the wall… I’m wondering… should I stop doing this…?

  7. My husband had a total knee replacement just 4 days ago and was sent home the following g Tuesday and was taking 100mg of tramadol every 4hours. The following Wednesday night because he was having a hard time getting up from his chair and was acting confused so I called911 The fire department helped him get into bed and he had a pseudo seizure . Never had one before. He’s and another one this morning which is Friday. Could that be from the tramadol?

  8. You must be obese to take 24 like lose some weight I take 8 and I’m high asf I repeat your obese I’m just trying to help

  9. I have been taking Tramadol on average 4 times a day 2 x 50mg tablets, I’ve been taking this dose for at least 10 years for Fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis, if I am not in pain at a particular time then I miss anything up to 3 doses with no ill effects. However 3 days ago problems with my partner all got too much and I took 70 tablets and went to sleep, hoping I suppose not to wake up, as you can see I did wake up, I suppose I slept on and off for 24 hours and felt very unsteady when I tried to get up, my partner didn’t even bother to check I was ok, even after I told him what I’d done. Since then I do feel a little spaced out and my hands are a bit shaky but otherwise I’m ok, I haven’t taken my usual dose at all since then, I suppose as I survived I don’t want to tempt fate by taking them again too soon. Am I going to be alright or is there more to come from the, quite frankly stupid overdose?

  10. My sister had been in and out of rehab for drugs and alcohol for years… and seems to always be suffering from something. (convinced she has a disease, part of her illness). She was prescribed Tramadol, had taken it for some time… and doctors would no longer give it to her so she now buys it through some sort of black market… direct from a source in India. This is addiction at this point? Right? She won’t help herself and is in grave denial. Thing is she’s in AA… has been alcohol clean for a few years and I fear she simply traded one drug for another. She’s an adult… how do you help an adult in this type of situation? From what I understand she has to be willing… she’s simply not. Not even close.

  11. 900 mg of Tramadol, taken by someone who was previously prescribed 80 mg Oxycontin 2x/day, for 3 years. Are they in danger of an overdose?

  12. There is a nationwide hysterical response to an “opioid crisis” that is supposedly caused by the ‘over-prescribing’ opioids by doctors…..that for some strange reason , doctors are just randomly writing scripts willy-nilly to patients randomly ……! And making vulnerable family members have completely uncontrolled access to pain pills lying all over the house. From my experience the pain pills are really needed and the users are very aware of where and how many pills are left before they can be refilled. The druggists make sure that there are no refills without the doctor writing a new prescription every month. And just to be sure they interrogate the customer to make sure they are who they say they are and show photo ID and they all count the days since the last refill , loud so all the customers can hear them give the patients the 3rd degree. Patients who they have a first name association with for many years. ….. In reality all the people dying from opioid abuse are buying their drugs from dealers who smuggle drugs across our wide open southern (mostly) border! There is a thinly veiled attempt to smear drug companies who many in the left hate with an irrational hatred almost as caustic as their hatred for Trump! This site does not point out that bias very well!!

  13. I’ve been on tramadol for 14 years I’m at 12 a day and I took 15@ 50mg would that be considered an overdose? I have had shallow breathing in the past couple weeks and even noticed I stopped breathing for a sec while going to bed I’m pretty scarred right now

  14. I have a 50 X 6 = 300 script for Tramadol. I have had it for 7+ years with great function and pain management. When I have breakout pain I have a script for APAP codeine 300-30. 3 per day when needed . My complaint is common, when I have surgical procedures, the surgeons will not give me any painkillers for my surgery and/or recovery especially recently since the hysterical opioid “crisis”.
The medical community is reluctant to prosecute abusers of drugs but pile-on law abiding patients who have long term synthetic opioid use. I’m so tired of being treated like a criminal by folks who should know better. There are way too many doctors, nurses, anesthetists and druggists who are ignorant about pain management. The common discourse is ” why do you take painkillers”? When you tell them it is for chronic pain, the next question is “well, what is your pain “number” ie (1- 10 ) now “? If you say one or two they say “why are you taking painkillers for that low of a number “?
The concept of pain prevention is lost on them and the inference is “well I think you are gaming the system for drugs”.
If a law enforcement officer pulled you over and said ” I stopped you because I see you are driving a vehicle that is capable of exceeding the speed limit, therefore, I am giving you this $200.00 citation because ‘I know ‘ you have almost certainly exceeded the 35 MPH limit by a few MPH.” You would feel violated mostly because you think you must be observed to be in violation before being cited ……..

  15. I took a tramadol hydrochloride 150 SR at about 5pm and 6hrs later I accidently took 2 of the same tablets, I had a headache and thought I had grabbed paracetamol out of my drawer but it was the tramadol. What do I do?

  16. Peripheral Neuropathy: I take 150 Mg/day of Lyrica, 600 Mg/day 6 Mg/day Hydrocodone. Is this Risky. This had been my dose for 10 years. Never asked for more and dropped 450 Mg/day of Lyrica on my own. Am I at risk…

  17. My friend (13 years old) took 6 pills which contains 37.5 mg tramadol for the first time. She had no other experience with it so far, this is 225 gram. Will she be okay or does she need medical attention ASAP?

  18. I think I accidently took 5 50 mg tramadol hcls at once and I’m only use to 3 at a time….will I be okay? I often have panic attacks I can’t distinguish from a serious medical problem

  19. I had my gallbladder removed on Wednesday they prescribed me norco but i already had Tramadol 50 mg for the pain before the surgery. They said not to take them together but I can alternate them. I hadn’t got a chance to fill my prescription at the Norco so I have been just taking the tramadol 50 mg every four hours Wednesday by the time I got home i had only taken two which was 100 mg then I took it all day Thursday which ended up being 300 mg and then today I started to experience some dizziness lightheadedness and blurred vision so I stopped taking it after four doses which came to 200 mg. I stopped taking it completely but I just wanted to know should I be worried? I haven’t had it in 5 hours and The side effects are mostly gone.

  20. My sister just passed away from Tramadol 50 mg 4x a day was her prescribe regime. I am trying to figure out how many pills would 1.763 add up too if that is the amount she had in her body at her autopsy ? I am just wondering how many she took by that number that came back in her toxicology report ? Is there anyway you can give me a amount that would match that number of how many she took ?
    Thank you so much,

    1. Hi Kim. I’m really sorry for your loss… I suggest that you consult with a coroner or a toxicologist about your concern.

  21. You have said that tramadol 500mgs taken make it overdose Is it 500mgs stat dose or daily dose taken qid I am assumin git as stat dose as you mentioned that unless one takes atleast 2.65 gms only then it qualifies for a overdose serotnin symptoms appear in the form of incoluntary muscle twitches and is quiet common I am an tramadol addict 2006 to 2014 Only once i had a seizure and was admitted I am sober now and on naltroxone I am an oncologist I would like you to clarify on tthis as quite a good of my pts ore on traladol

    1. Hi Dr. Narasimha. At 500 mg of tramadol, you can begin to experience severe side effects such as seizures. However, tramadol overdose doesn’t actually occur unless you take between 2.65 and 8.2 grams, which is about 5-18 times the recommended maximum DAILY dosage. You may end up in the hospital if you take 500 mg of tramadol, but you probably won’t die.

  22. I can’t believe what I have read here… you people need to get some real drugs to get over this tramadol bs. it is all bs. I can not believe anyone can get addicted to tramadol. It is exactly the same as getting addicted to Chicken McNuggets at McDonald’s. Wake up. What ever you have to do please wake up. This is a big part of what is wrong with America. Look in the mirror. OMG.

  23. Shane (in Jan. 2017 post)….thank you for sharing your experience. I am just about in the same boat and was considering tramadol as a means to an end and wondering exactly how much it would take to do the job. Now I know better. I hope you are doing better!! It can be rough to make yourself just get through the day. One day at a time is how I’m taking it right now. (That’s ALL I can do.) Good luck to you and to everyone else who have bravely shared their personal pain stories on here!

  24. My Dr. has prescribed Tramadol for pain. Norco not available for the moment. I was taking one Norco 10/325 50mg tabs 3 to 4 times a day. I am 66 years old male with good cholesterol now, but two stents put in a year ago. BP 110/70. I drink NO more than 2 beers and 1 glass of red wine each day. Is Tramadol, 2 50mg in the morning and the same at bed time, ok? Can I take any more than that?

  25. I have been taking Tramadol Clohydrate (liquid in a 100mg bottle). lI usually take 10 drops. Yesterday The drops would not come out so I gave a suck on it to release it and a big amount spurted into my mouth. Now I have a dry mouth and a burning sensation in my stomach. I also take Nexium 40.What should I do?

  26. I would like to know the interaction of Tramadol with other opioids like citralopram and Temazepam. Also if a doctor can prescribe Tramadol if a patient is already on Temazepam and Citalopram. How fatal is concentration of 17.4ug/ml in blood and if this effect will be enhanced by presence of about 2ug/mL of Citalopram.

  27. I am currently taking 300 milligrams of tramadol daily for severe headaches (On some days I have taken 400 milligrams) But it is starting not to agree with me. It helps the pain but into the second hr. I begin to feel feel wiped out and generally weakened. (I am not taking other medications that might complicate things).
I plan to speak to my Dr. about cutting my dose to maximum 200 milligrams per day Do you have any particular advice about how to best do this without undue suffering Many thanks.

  28. I have rhumatoid arthritis & fibromyalgia (can’t spell) I take 6 tram a day. 100mg ea. I have been doing this for close to 20yrs. I know I am addicted but they help with the pain. Am I in serious trouble? I am 66yrs old.

  29. My doctor prescribed tramadol 50mg 1 to 2 tabs every 8 hrs if I take more then the prescribed dose I get nasauated and feel like a hangover I have a mentally abusive husband and when he starts in I pop the tramadol. Nothing happens outside of being nasauated I don’t take them unless necessary am I doing myself more harm then good

  30. VA prescribed Tramadol for my pain 6 years ago. Never had any issues with over dosing or any known side effects since I took the amount prescribed daily and no more. IT WORKED! NO PAIN! FELT GOOD! I am 76 and just want to enjoy what life I have left but now? My PCP wont prescribe any amount of Tramadol which by the way Medicare covers at no cost, but will instead prescribe other pain meds that cost a fortune and have some horrible side effects. Something is wrong here! I am in total pain 24/7 now. What a shame.

  31. Husband took fifty tramadol fifty mg at ten pm last night its now two pm the next day he is awake can stand but not walk his blood pressure is 107/73. He refused to go er or dr I am keeping him awake making him move arms and legs. He vomited one timry

  32. I have diabetes with autonomic nerve damage through out my body, my back hurts severely and the pain radiates through to my toes and hands. Would tramadol be a good choice for relieving this type of pain? My doctor refuses to prescribe any pain killers because he is against them, he is not in my shoes and does not feel the burning and muscle tightness I feel. I need something to help with this pain and Tramadol , with the research seems to be better than hydro or Oxy. Opinions?

  33. Hi.
I was at work Saturday night and I think I may have taken too much Tramadol. I take it for scoliosis. I think I took about 12x150mg tablets. I was behind the bar and started staring blankly and groaning and clutching my heart according to my colleague. I fainted and hit my forehead on the sink. My colleague couldn’t find my pulse then I stopped breathing. I then was just passed out. Does this sound like an overdose or a heart attack. I was raced to hospital. The CT scan revealed that my arteries are very bad also. I have changed from Seretide to simbicort apart from that everything is the same. I take provera 5mg progynova 2mg efexor 150mg serequel 300mg vitamin D. I have premature ovarian failure. I just was released from hospital today and due to see my doctor 1st thing in the morning. Should I tell her I took extra?

  34. I’m so used to tramadol, I do take 2000mg without having any side effect, except that I do sleep a lot after and some interesting funny dreams, I think I’m addicted because I feel I need it everytime , I’m I safe ?

    1. Hi John. In individuals with an opiate, opioid or synthetic opiate tolerance, 450 mg is the maximum recommended daily dosage for tramadol. If you took 1,000 mg of tramadol you should call 911 or have someone close to you drive you to the ER as soon as possible.

  36. Olefart, 12.5 grams is well over the LD-50. The most significant symptoms of overdose are constricted pupils, bradycardia arrhythmias (slow heart rate), respiratory depression, low blood pressure, coma, muscle flaccidity, the signs of secondary clinical shock, and death.
Hence, such is a true medical emergency, for which you will need to seek EMS treatment for.

  37. I have been taking tramadol, allapurenol and extra strength tylenol for extremely bad toothaches as well as spinal stenosis and rheumatoid arthritis. My pain is very bad. However, I am now beginning to feel very heavy. Headachy and sick. I don’t have dental coverage. I don’t know what to do.

  38. What is the relationship between body weight and tramadol tolerance in the case of serious short term pain. How serious is the Is the interaction between tramped and alcohol. are a beer or two or a a glass of wine safe with a normal dose?

  39. Hi,I am prescribed 400mg tram a day and have been for 18 months, after an extreme case of necrotising pancreatitus with infection, septicaemia 21 operations in 4 months with a 7 month hospital stay.It ruined my life my wife left me with our 5 year old son because i was too sick. i now have major depression and tramadol is an effective antidepressant as well as opiat, but i am only slightly happy when i am very high of tramal and pot, 1000-1200 mg is the dose I usually take for a psychoactive effect but often need 1500-2000 mg for effect,I know this is dangerous but don’t care i am also a type 1 diabetic cause of the pancreas destruction so there’s another risk factor plus mixing with 45 mg mirtazapine will that add danger?i am 30 years old and want to know if there’s a safer effective way to get “well”. i need help. And the mirtazapine doesn’t seem to work that well, pot is better but is illegal in my country so yeah I’m screwed. Is this based in Australia. Tim

  40. I had a knee replacement 3 days ago and was prescribed tramadol and tylenol every 6 hours, and oxycodiene as much as every 3 hours as needed for pain. I had an alarm set for 12 to take the oxy and another one set for 4 to take the tramedol and tylenol. I was confused and thought I had slept through my 12 oclock alarm so I took all 3 together. This means I took the tramedol and tylenol 4 hours early. Is it safe to go back to sleep? What should I do?

  41. hi my son took 10 tramadol .hes 16 .he felt numb legs, couldnt pee for a day. but his chest has been diabolical since. he cant stop coughin and appears chesty all the time. no treatment was given in hosp at the time just obs. its been 6 wks ,still not getting better.should i go back to gp. hes had two lots of antibiotics in 6 weeks ,clears while hes on them but very chesty when the treatment ends, is this caused by the trams. i cant do anything to help him, hes up all hours,im hearing him coughin like he is . hes not right .

  42. I normally take 100 mg Tramadol every 6-10 hrs (usually 6-8 hrs) as needed to control chronic pain syndrome. I always write down or record in my phone when I took the last dose & earliest I can take the next dose. (I also take 300 mg Gabapentin with it 3Xday for nerve damage burning). Today for the 1st time I forgot I’d taken it (didn’t write it down right away) & took another 100 mg w/in 20 minutes! I remembered just as I swallowed the 2nd dose! I’ve been taking it for 3 years at the 100 mg dose. So I took 200 mg w/in 20-30 minutes! I didn’t take Gabapentin or Tylenol with it. Should I be OK? Should I wait 10-12 hours for next dose (I’m thinking my pain should SURELY be under control!)? Can I take a Gabapentin in an hour or so? I’m female, 5’3″, 179lbs & have taken the 100 mg every day for at least 3 yrs. Thank you. Carol

  43. I think I took 150 mg of tramadol earlier but could not remember. I went on ahead and took 100 mg. Am I going to die from this?

  44. Don’t use tramadol to end anything. I tried recently after taking 76 pills at once. Woke up very disappointed and angrier that when I when to sleep. My life is a total wreck. Girlfriend left me for meth and totally heart broken. I’m not selfish enough to make a mess of myself just want the pain to end.

  45. Like my mother had I also have her genes. premature start of arthritis. also stenosis(osteo and rhematoid arthrits). I was born with a congenital defect in my neck. today nearing 60 years of age if i don’t have a thick towel around my neck it feels like a knife is going through my neck. hydrocodone did much to relieve my iatrogenic ptsd from when i was young 19 yr old in a nervous breakdown crying uncontrollably and like a heap on the floor a non violent, voluntary patient, the shrink put me on torture drugs(anti psychotics, neuroleptics and i was not and still never had psychosis.

I was on hydrocodone for a decade. my average during that decade of being prescribed was about 5 5/500 per day. the 5 means 5mg of the opioid, the 500mg of acetiminophen. Tylenol(acetaminophne in it) ironically is more damaging to your liver and other visceral organs and shortens life span.

Because of the cruel cdc guidelines, she is in fear like many doctors. there has been an increase of cut off pain patients from opioids paying big bucks for pills in the illegal market, or taking heroin which ironically is much cheaper on the street, and worst of all an increase in older adult suicides for the ultimate pain relief.

So she’s even afraid of even touching schedule 3. Several pharmacists said a doctor should have nothing to fear if she went from Vicodin, now schedule 2 to codeine products like tylenol or paracematol 3 in schedule. I use to feel horrible taking anything with codeine and usually get up and have coffee. that is due to the fact that a size able percentage of us don’t have the enzyme in us which metabolizes codeine. So i bought some general all around digestive enzymes from the health food store. I found a bottle with about 5 tylenol with codeine from a dentist after a back tooth extraction. the mix of the general enzymes and the codeine worked for me for the first time in my life.

The Trammadol does almost nothing for me. I have to take around 600 mg per day for any effect. supposedly you have to take like 2 to 4 grams to o.d,. 1000 mg = 1 gram, safely under the o.d. minimum. So what does she give me. 60 50 mg trammadol pills per month. i’ll be out in less than a week.

the cdc are guidelines but the mother fucking dea has made them laws and compassionate doctors are losing their licenses or worse like serving time in prison. My whole life has been emotional and physical pain. now that im in disabilty for retirement why can’t i feel relatively comfortable which most people take for granted.

Well at least, so i told the non opioid tramdol which acts something like and opioid by binding to the GABA receptors. But 600mg per day of trammadol does not even come close to as low as 2 5/500 hydrocodone(vicodin) to pain reduction and making it able to get out and live a life.

If i had just ten thousand dollars i’d go and live modestly in Canada or Great Britain which doesn’t have a cruel fascist war on opioids. I’d actually like to go to warmer climates in South America like Ecuador and other South American countries that don’t have the war on pain patients. But i’m old now at 60, have speech and hearing problems, and its really difficult for me to learn Spanish or Brazilian Portugese…..sigh

  46. I have taken 2, 50 mg Tramadol three times a day for several years. The VA cut my pills to 2 two times a day. I can’t take INSIDS because of kidney failure or acediminifin be because of some liver problems. The Tramadol two times in 24 hours are not nearly enough. What would be the best thing for me to do besides Physical therapy as I work around the house a lot. Pain management would not be the best thing for me.These are what the VA offered I am 25 miles from any of those place.. Thank you

  47. By accident doubled morning dose of tramadol to 400mg. Hads earlier taken to nurofen due to toothache. Is this a problem. Normal daily dose of tramadol is 400 mg, due to fibro-myalgia

    1. Hi Lyn. Call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 for an assessment of overdose risk or with help on what to do next.

  48. I take 1200-1600mg of tramadol for chronic pain. The high doses are the minimum the get any relief what so ever. Drugs like endone do not provide relief for me. I’m a large male, 23yo. The only side effect I’ve ever had is minor urinary retention. How much higher than this am i risking overdose? I want to stay on the safe side as my dose is so many times higher than the reccomended maximum. My doctor is aware of the ammount I’m taking, isn’t happy about it but won’t put me on a slow release treatment plan just yet as we try to get to the cause of my chronic pain through other medications. This dose of tramadol is a daily need.

  49. I’ve taken up to 1,200 mg of Tramadol in a day & also use Prozac, trazadone & amitriptyline and nothing bad has ever happened. No seratonin syndrome or seizures just ringing in my ears & blurry vision. I’ve been on Tramadol 6 yrs and are prescribed 8 per day. Perhaps the more tolerant one is the less likely you’ll experience serious side effects.

  50. hi!i was overdosed on tramadol.i took 22 pills of 50mg along with other drugs such as promethazine aantitussive cough tab and spasm.i took 20 pills with other pills and no problem occured until i added 2 more pills.i could easily see the difference in experience and in my breathing.doctors acted like it was the end of the world and tried to charge me extreme high bills and they wanted to take me to the icu, even if i vomited 3 litrs and i became my questions are can i take tramadol ever again,is it safe to use it again in low dosesor i’ll be prone to allergy or other problems.and how much was i in real danger and was the act of those doctors were right?

  51. The amount on the bottle says 50 mg for pain .
And that person is use to taking 50 mg.
What is the amount to overdose. To make sure that doesn’t happen to the person.

  52. Am from Nigeria and I need urgent advice on how to overcome this
I too 600mg of tramadol and I felt slippy and I slept 4hrs latter I discover that my heart was beating fast and a severe shortness of breath and I went to a doctor and checked me and said it will take time befor the symptom has been 7months now and it has been complex for me I experience pains in my chest, head and sometin drawing my neck unabling me to breath normally and I feel something moving in all my body but all this are temporary it’s come and it goes.what should I do?am so very scared how long will it stop

  53. I have a subluxed AC joint…it’s the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced and I’ve given birth….I went to the doctor and they gave me tramadol…and today I’ve taken 550mgs and my shoulder still hurts….I’ve taken it over the course of 5 hours….I’m kinda worried I’ve over dosed because this is the first strong pain killer I’ve been given….Drs never think I’m in as much pain as I am….because I’m not breaking down crying in front of them….I have an exceptionally high pain tolerance…but I just wanna know if I should be concerned or if I’ll be ok….I just want the pain to go away

  54. How many people died from Tramadol overdose in SC in 2015 ( or latest year of record)? Is it necessary to treat users of prescribed pain killers like criminals ? Instead let’s prosecute abusers of legal drugs to the full extent of the law and treat law abiding patients with respect . Using the logic of the FDA, all patrons and employees of every drug store should be issued a speeding traffic violation
every time they visit the pharmacy because you know the speed laws were probably broken by more than a few folks any day. And thousands of percents more of people die as a result of speeding every day.\ than die of Tramadol overdose. After reading the above messages, I find many of them non-credible because of the amounts of the drug they are able to acquire without any regulation. I take 300 mg a day (6 X 50 ) and my drugest treats me like a criminal. I really need more of the drug because of the tolerance built up after almost 6 years . I tolerate the drug well and it gives me almost relief I need. I have to take additional motrin when my back pain is so bad I can’t get out of bed. It seems most Druggests and Dr.s are concerned about themselves and not the patients.

  55. I took tramadol a long time ago & had some still left. I took all ten at 50 mg & also with alcohol. It wasn’t much alcohol. How long does it take to feel better faster?

  56. I take 50 mg (DOLOTRAM ) TRAMADOL HYDROCHLORIDE 1 capsule fore migraine whit 1 migral pill and 1 carbamazipine pill. Some time I take more to stop the pain . I am concerned about how much is safe . And that I mite overdose . However much is save an however much is dangerous to overdose and die . Please help me to know how mane are dangerous .

  57. Well this information was supposed to help me, but instead leaves me with more questions. I suffered a seizure in a gas station during my lunch break at wrk last week with no prior history of seizures. I had taken 4 tramadol that morning and felt like shit so decided to go to gas station and buy a Monster. I took one drink of the Monster and was told that I collapsed and started seizing and foaming ou of my mout. and the next thing I know I’m coming to covered in sweat, with blood on my face, knots on the back of my head (which caused a concussion) and a screwed up back. I’ve taken more tramadol than that before and also have a very high tolerance, but I have no idea what else could have caused the seizures :-/

  58. I took I believe like 12 /50mg of tramadol two days ago. I thought I was going to die up until 30 min ago. I didn’t know that I was increasing the dose as the day went on, I just did. Until a couple hours ago when I started feeling like I was going to die. I was sure of it, and that’s saying something from me. I was breathing hard, my chest feels compressed,my heart was
beating fast, I was scared, I felt high higher than normal, what should I do ? I also can’t relax now! And it’s bed time

  59. My friend died from an overdose of tremadol. I want to know if it hurt her. I was wondering if you could tell me what happened to her body from overdosing from it.

    1. Hi, Kenzie. It’s terrible to hear about your loss. I’m really sorry. I’m not able to answer your question since OD is different for each person. I suggest you speak with a professional to read hear death report, and explain what caused the death.

  60. My sister dead of a tramdol od 2.75 in her blood can you help me by telling me how capsule did she take she started taking them on Thursday and pass way on Sunday morning

    1. Hi, Saima. No words can describe how sorry I am for your loss. I’d suggest you speak with a coroner or another medical professional about your concerns. We’re not able to provide you with a qualified response.

  61. I have been taking tramadol for 10 yrs as I have fibromyalgia , I reduced gradually from 200 mg to 100 mg. about 2 yrs go.

It’s now 6 am and I’m very drowsy still. A bit slow. Going back to bed.

  63. Tanith, to answer your question, Tramadol undergoes extensive first–pass metabolism in the liver, and also undergoes renal excretion. According to the FDA prescribing information, Tramadol’s dosage frequency is increased to every 12 hours in those with kidney failure, and in those with minor liver damage, the standard dosage is dropped to 50mg every 12 hours, as opposed to the general dose of 100mg every 6 hours, due to the extensive backup of the drug. Given this information, it is very well possible that the drug caused a more chronic overdose-like toxic effect, which although would have presented with the onset of more subtle symptoms, can be just as deadly as a acute overdose. one of the clues that the medical examiner looks at to determine if a case is a suicide is the gastric contents. If the gastric contents are free from traces of the drug, this means that the drug wasn’t consumed recently, and therefore the toxic state would lend more toward a chronic state as opposed to an acute intentional overdose.

  64. My friend took 14 100mg tramadol last night which was 1400mg, refused to go to the hospital last night had temperature breathing problems jerky legs drowsy eyes ect she got through last night and wakened up this morning had a cup of tea and vomited everywhere she is still having breathing problems clammy temperature up and down is she still in danger from last night or I she safe now does she just have to sit it out? Or should she go to A&E , she is only soppose to take 100mg twice a day

    1. HI Cathy. Despite her refusal, you should have taken her to the hospital even yesterday. I’d say it’s better to be safe and take her to be examined by a doctor and treated if necessary.

  65. My father recently passed away and his post mortem result lists combined affects of tramadol toxicity and pleural fibrosis as cause of death. My father was prescribed tramadol for a long time but does this mean that he deliberately overdosed (he had talked about endeing his life in the past) or could this be down to a build up due to long term use?

  66. I was prescribed this for minor pains. I have had multiple seizures taking this medicine. All of the seizures I have had occurred when I took 150mg or more (Three 50mg Tablets). They were all taken within a 12 hour time span. Please be careful with this drug as it is known to cause seizure quite a bit.

P.S. Once at the hospital the first time I had 2 doctors tell me that 200mg of tramadol a day is likely to cause some patients seizures.

  67. My wife took 200mg of tramadol by mistake ( thought it was Panadol). She slept well but is itchy and very dizzy this morning. Should I take her to a doctor?

    1. Hi Peter. Yes, have a doctor examine her. Even if it’s not serious it’s good to be sure in such situations.

  68. Hi a friend of mine took 24 50mg tramadol last night at about 1 in the morning. They said they were fine until about 4:30 when they started throwing up. They said they threw up a few times and then went to sleep for awhile. All day they have been dizzy, nauseous, feeling a spinning sensation, a terrible headache, etc. How long after taking the tramadol would they be in danger of dying from an overdose? Has it been too long? or should they still be worried?

    1. Hi Colton. The tramadol is in your friends system now and due to the large dose elimination may go slower. I recommend you call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 to talk to a poison expert that can assess the risk of overdose and provide you with guidance on what to do next.

  69. My nephew recently died from OD. These are the drugs that the toxology report list as being in his system Tramadol 3.18/L, Hrdrocodone 0 .011/L, Xanax 0.01/L, N-desmethyltramadol 0.19/L Is all this enough to cause him to OD?

    1. Hello Teresa. I’m very sorry about your loss. Unfortunately, I cannot say anything with certainty. It seems like they found a few different medications, who are definitely not safe to be mixed. Sometimes, it’s not about the cocktail of mixed drugs, and even at low doses, fatalities can happen. Especially if your nephew had no tolerance to these medications and took them all at once. Such a terrible loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

  70. I am a Nigerian, 22years old and I’m addicted to tramadol, each time I try to stop its useage, I begin to experience flu, I yawn and sometimes I keep sneezing. I also get so dizzy and it follows up with a stronng headache. Please how do I discontinue use without getting any harm? Please I really do need your help. I want to stop taking it…

  71. I have taken large doses of many types of narcotic pain medications for several years. Due to a few serious accidents I have been survived. Tramadol seems to be the safest pain med I have taken. I always have to take large doses of whatever I take. Currently I take up to 800mg in two doses 400mg each within 4 hours. I also combine vistaril with each dose which allows the tramadol to work more effectively. I don’t recommend that anyone try this. Im just sharing my own information. I have a large ceiling of tolerance to most medications.

  72. My friend is unfortunately addicted to tramadol she is always taking one after another in one day she had taken 10 150mg which is 1500mg I know addiction is hard to overcome but maybe if she new what risks she is doing to her body she would think again.

  73. My sons ex girlfriend takes 400mg of tramadol a day with 4000mg of paracetamol. She has severe mood swings and her personality has changed completely. She has lied to people making up horrible stories about my son. My son has had a breakdown and I’m worried his ex partner is going to harm their two young children. She has been on Tramadol for three years with this dose and had no review.. Please can you advise.

  74. Hello,
61 years old, I live in Europe and have been on Tramadol (liquid, drops-pump) for the last 3 years. Most of it without medical supervision.
I like the relaxing effect; I actually don’t need the pain-killing effect anymore.
The amount I take is fluctuating. When I reach a high (up to 2,500mg/2,5g per day) I feel i have to make an effort to reduce, and usually manage to gradually go down to 2 or 300mg per day, with some withdrawal effects. I never stopped totally in these 3 years, but I can stay on 2-300mg for longer periods.
Looks like I have developed an addiction …
I also take Urbanyl on prescription to treat a light form of epilepsy I have had since I was a child.
I’m an alcoholic, who stopped drinking back in 1986. Never had a drink since then, with the help of AA. I keep in touch with the program by reading daily thoughts, but very seldom go to meetings.
But I can identify my relationship to Tramadol, in some ways, to the one I had to alcohol, before I stopped drinking 28 years ago.
I’m confused, because I (falsly??) think that I can keep on like this, and my past experience tells me it is not possible. I’m probably not honest with myself.

What’s the way to handle this?

The answer is probably in my above comments, but I would be overly happy to be able to share…

  75. My mother recently passed away due to a supposed toxic level of this medicine. She had been taking it for awhile and never took too much. Gow would she have died? Could someone have given this too her without her knowledge in some way

  76. I have severe digestive problems and was prescribed Codeine, several weeks into using this I bought a box of 100 tramadols (50mg) off the black market (pharmaceutical grade with a pharmacy tag) and took the recommended dose. I didn’t take them to get high, only to stop the debilitating cramps and diarrhoea. Only tonight I noticed for some completely unknown reason (memory lapse) I might have taken an extra 350mg on top of my ‘daily dose’. I feel ok so far. I wouldn’t recommend this medicine to people looking to get high but it does genuinely help with digestive/IBS/crohns disease.

  77. Hi Lewis. Make a schedule with the time and days you need to take the medication. Then, make a system and only cross out the hour after you take it. You can set your alarm to ring and remind you every time it’s time to take tramadol again. This way you will always know if you took it, and when to take it. Hope this helps.

  78. I have a rare form of muscular dystrophy & have to take 400mg a day, as prescribed by my Neurologist. I just worry that I’ll forget & take too many.

  79. My boyfriends sister just died sep 9 2014. She had a huge amount of tramadol in her system. They are thinking she may have committed suicide. She was only 27. I miss her. Life is too short. You only live once.

  80. Im taking now up to 12-14 pills a 50mg during the day, as my pains getting worse and worse. So Im painfree in some few hours. And only this. There are no highs and euforia, and I dont think of this medication when there is no pain. Obviously, Im getting tolerant and need another kind of strong painkillers. But, I have a psyciatric diagnosis(borderline), and afraid to get another serious problem, like addiction, if I get a real opiate. To my deep regret, my doctor is not very competent, and I cannot go on with increasing the doses. Im really desperate!

  81. Hi Lynn. Tramadol 50 mg to 100 mg can be administered as needed for pain relief every 4 to 6 hours, but it shouldn’t exceed 400 mg per day. If he took 400mg over the course of 4 days, and has a high tolerance to them, he should be ok.

  82. I work in a drug and alcohol rehab a client has said he took 400 tramadol over 4 days last week (50mg tablets). Is this possible without dying ? He has abused very high levels of tramadol in the past.

  83. I once took 8x50mg tramadol all at once…that was around 10ish…after 3-4 hours, all that had happened was: I was hungry, but felt queasy & my vision and speech were bit slurred and blurred…

  84. Ive only taken tramadol once before a couple yrs ago just yesterday I was perscribed tramadol 50mg it says take one tablet two times aday as needed ive taken 3 tranadols throughout the day but I dont know if I might have taken them to close together like maybe an hr or 2 to 4 hrs apart im also diabetic type 1 the only symptoms ive had is just really tired & calm & a little bit of dizziness & fast heartbeat should I worry? Are those signs of possible accidental overdose? Im a little afraid if I fall asleep ill fall into a coma so if you can help me in anyway you can id really apprechiate it. Thank you

  85. I bearly got prescribed tramadol 50 mg for boxers fracture I rook one at 7am today then 1pm another at 6pm I’m experienceing slightly smaller breaths especially wen yawning should I b concerned? I’m not over doing meds so far 150mg today is this normal I feel fine just shortness of breath it bearly started after third pill today I might just b over thinking what should I do ?

  86. Hello Tim. How about formal treatment? Have you considered options for either inpatient, residential treatment for addiction? It’s intensive, but with a history like yours and multiple substances, you’ll probably need help during detox and then a prolonged stay to address underlying psycho-emotional issues which compel the drug and alcohol use. My best wishes go out to you.

  87. A former heroin addict, i gave up 15 years ago and am still on methadone, but only !0ml daily (i sometimes save some and get high on around 60ml) I am also an alcoholic, no matter how much i try- at present 1/2 bottle of vodka daily. i am buying tramadol and using 20 50mg tablets at a time (1000mg) obviously this is not healthy – i have been admitted to hospital twice with pancreatitis and abuse the morphine patches, 25mg per hour 3 day dispersal – i use 5 or 6 at a time. how likely am i to die? i am 56 and first took drugs at 12, heroin at 17 but did not become addicted to heroin until my mid 30s. Please, advice other than ‘just say no’ would really be appreciated

  88. i currently take alot of pain medications and at the moment i take 8 50mg tramadol but am thinking of upping this as its not working. i should also add that split throughout the day i take 15mg procloperazine, 8 30/500 cocodamol, 150mg arthrotec, 20mg diazepam and 200mg omeprazol. what are your suggestions please as pain is really bad and need answers. i have fibromyalgia and chronic pelvic pain.

  89. I am highly addicted to tramadol. My fiance gets 50mg every month and I go through it within two weeks by taking 5-7 at a time..I have no insurance for rehab and I’m in need of some serious help

  90. I know someone who has taken 8 pills, 400 milligrams for there first time and he got really dizzy, vommited, shaky, and light headed. I talked to him the next day and he felt better but is still a little worried. Is there still a chance for him to OD? My question is whether or not there is a time period for OD’ing and if I should be worried. He is a big guy, 6 foot 2 and was wondering what the person should do. Thanks.

  91. Hello Bereaved. I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. You’re probably looking for some answers. The best place to start would be the coroner directly. Then, seek expert help with a toxicologist or even a Medical Review Officer at a diagnostic testing lab. You need medical expertise in order to get the answer you’re looking for. Bless and peace to you in your time of difficulty.

  92. Hi, my mother recently passed away from Tramadol toxicity. She has been an alcohol abuser for over 40 years. The toxicology report states that she had 14mg per litre of Tramdol in her blood. Could anyone give me any indication as to how many tablets she may have taken to get this high a concentration? I will add that she had a BMI of 30.1 was aged 63, smoked and drank and was on heart medication so her metabolism may have been poor. Thanks in advance

  93. Hello Jack. Symptoms such as panic attack can be related to marijuana use, especially if it’s chronic. Have you thought about seeing a psychologist to learn new ways of coping or to talk about drug use in general? I’ve been there – and it really helps to consider an entire lifestyle change if you’re feeling off balance and panic overtakes you…

  94. I took 650mg of Tramadol a few months ago, After an unsettling trip to the E.R. I woke up feeling like I was in someone else’s body. I just felt like this wasn’t the same person I was 2 days ago. Since I’ve developed moderate anxiety. Worsening insomnia. On top of that about 3/4 of the time I smoke weed which is pretty often I have these horrible panick attacks where I swear i’m gonna die. Point being i’m worried about serious mental/physical health disorders that could result from this. Should I be concerned?

  95. I have had bankart surgery to left shoulder and have cfs. I take up to 6 x 50mg tramadol 3 times a day 3x 500mg co dydramol and solpadol4 times a day can’t remember dosage. Of solpadol. I also take antihistamen and a few paracetamol during day up to 6 paracetamol over counter strength. is this ok , it does nothing for the pain and I want to up it, what would u recommend

  96. Hi There,
I take 4 50mg at night a few hours before I go to sleep for a torn tendon in my ankle. I do not take any during the day so the max per day (and at one time) is 200mg. I have been slightly increasing a quarter of the round pill at a time and refuse to go about 200mg. After reading several stories and researching, I just want to be sure that this amount is safe. Thank you for your time and knowledge.

  97. I have been aflicted with Aachnoiditis now for ove 20 years. (at least nobody has or wiill diagnose it).It is fustating and sickening to think that doctors will not tell the patient of what could happen-ie,.–(a life time of pain). If I wee told the facts and the possible consequence,I would have un out of that offece not waked…. A living hell!

I took two Tamadol and 4 tamadol at 50mg. I still feel the pain in my foot and intermittant stabinh pain-thank God is is rare.

I do not know what to do, I am deapeate.

    Lou Moelli

  98. Hi Josh. Check with your doctor first. Perhaps there is another opioid medication which you might need to consider, as it seems that your tolerance to tramadol has increased. Alternative options for pain relief include hydrocodone and oxycodone, although these are more addictive and powerful painkillers.

  99. Hi all, I’ve been taking tramadol 50mg between 9-12 capsules a day for about two years now and I am thinking of upping my dosage to 12 -16 a day ? I have osteoporosis it’s pretty damn painful , and it’s getting worse . I know that I am de

  100. Hi Jim. You’ll need to get clearance to drink from your prescribing doctor while on tramadol. If you can’t cut down or stop for the duration of the prescription, you might want to evaluate your drinking.

  101. Hi Concerned. The dosage and use sounds like drug abuse. I’d suggest that you consult with the National Drug Abuse Hotline at 1-800-662-HELP to find local resources in your area to get more information and start to help your friend address drug abuse.

  102. My family member is taking 50mg Tramadol with a quantity of 240. He is a recovering addict. He just filled his prescrition and ten days later his bottle is almost empty. He said he was doubling the dosage. The directions were to take two pills every six hours. He has also gone through a bottle of Xanax within nine days. Last time he ran out of Tramadol he started to have seizure symtoms but more thrashing like. I believe his body is going through withdrawl at this point. Is he taking lethal doses?? I’m worried about him having seizures or worse.

  103. Hi Dave. I think that you need to consult a pharmacist. It’s possible that you have become opioid-tolerant, but experts set the limit at 450 mg tramadol per day. It may help to also seek out a prescription for a strong opioid like hydrocodone or oxycodone during the days before treatment.

  104. Hi, I’ve been prescribed Tramadol and paracetamol for severe tooth ache (open to nerve) while I await a dentist appointment on about a weeks time. I’ve been told to take two tramadol tablets four times a day BUT I find I cannot last longer than 5 hours (not 6) before I’m in excruciating agony… This means I’ve upped my intake to 5 times a day which is 500mg per day along with 4000mg of paracetamol… I feel very euphoric, sweaty and a little uncoordinated when on them but no pain which is great… Am I taking too much of a risk at these levels ?

  105. Hi Always on the Go… Thanks for your questions. It does seem like you have developed quite a tolerance to tramadol. Apart from playing with the level of tolerance (which I don’t really recommend as this might provoke withdrawal symptoms, which can include seizures) I’d suggest that you look into other pain relief alternatives, such as a controlled release version of oxycodone or other opioid(s). Tramadol might just not be working for you and is actually in a totally distinct class of opioids in and of itself. And I would certainly suggest that you consult your prescribing doctor (with full disclosure) to seek a professional opinion. It seems to me that you’re playing with fire with such a high dose of daily tramadol…and that you can find another option that can work better for you.

  106. I have been taking tramadol consistently for 3-4 years now. For a long time I kept my dosage under the required daily maximum. Every once in a while I would take 500-600 mgs and it helped with no apparent side effects. Over the last few months I have noticed that I am consistently taking higher dosages than recommended (500-800 mg) daily. I don’t ever jump to a higher dosage but slowly increase it. I first started taking this medication for lower back and hip pain. It seemed to relieve the pain enough and didn’t put me to sleep. Quite the opposite, it energized/calmed me (the anti-depressant effect.) I have Adult ADHD but have never taken medication for it (tramadol seems to have a positive affect on this however.)

I have two-three times had the shortness of breath and it sacred the S*** out of me. Every few months I slowly reduce my dosage in order to make sure I have the capability of weaning myself off. I drink a ton of caffeine! Coke, Coffee, 5 hour energy, etc..

Here is the issue…I am always on the go, so reducing the dosage is hard because it lowers my energy (and mood) so taking it helps me manage activities. I am an executive and massively involved in activities. I think that while I started to take it for the pain relief, I now take it for the energy and difficulty of reducing dosage.

Any recommendations on decreasing dosage, managing this or alternative recommendations? Thanks for the help.

Also, I take the 100mg time release capsules available in Mexico.

  107. Hello dbi. Thanks for your message and for reaching out for help. I’d suggest that you call the 1-800 anonymous hotline number for drug treatment to learn more. The National Drug and Alcohol Treatment Referral Service is open 24 hours a day at 1-800-662-HELP and can link you to a variety of services, including detox clinics in your area. But once off tramadol, how will you stay off? You’ll need to address the mental and emotional compulsions that drive your tramadol use if you want to really live a life without tramadol. But you can do it!

Please let us know if this helps.

  108. Hi- I have been taking tramadol for over 4 yrs now. I have worked my tolerance up to about 25 a day-taking 4 at a time every few hours. I have never had a seizure but I kno this is a ridiculous amount of any kind of pills to take that much. I want to stop but I am afraid of withdrawals-brain zaps. Do not feel like I could taper. If I have them I will take them. Ugh! How did I get myself in this mess!! Sooo anyway guys I need help. Should I ask the doc for something to help me get off of these like suboxon (sp). Any advice would be appreciated. 🙂

  109. Hi Mindi. Can you describe the symptoms that you are experiencing as well as the dosage of tramadol you take? Also, please call your prescribing doctor to report these side effects ASAP.

  110. I started taking this drug about a week ago after my carpal tunnel surgery and up til tonight I didn’t have any issues with it but tonight I’m just feeling different and it’s really starting to scare me should I worry?
