Lorazepam clears the body fairly quickly.

In fact, lorazepam’s short half-life (related to other benzodiazepines) is about 12-18 hours. While lorazepam usually is not reported in standard drug tests, if you are getting high on lorazepam you risk physical and psychological dependence on the drug. So how long can you expect for lorazepam to leave the body completely? More on the peak levels and half life of lorazepam here, plus a section for your questions about lorazepam use or detection at the end.

Main Lorazepam Uses

Lorazepam treats anxiety, panic attacks, and insomnia. It’s also used for other conditions, including epilepsy, irritable bowel syndrome, and alcohol withdrawal. Lorazepam decreases abnormal excitement in the brain, to control anxiety and relax the body. However, lorazepam should only be prescribed for 2-4 weeks because of it is one of the most addictive sleeping tablets on the market.

How Do You Take Lorazepam?

Lorazepam is available in two forms. There is an oral tablet, and a liquid solution, which are both ingested. Sometimes, the pill is crushed and snorted, but this is dangerous and discouraged by medical professionals.

Peak Levels And Half Life Of Lorazepam

Lorazepam reaches peak concentrations in the blood in two hours. This lorazepam peak level varies on the amount taken, of course, but for a 2 mg tablet, it would be about 20 ng/mL. The age of the person taking Lorazepam doesn’t seem to effect the rate of absorption. So, the average half-life of lorazepam in most people is about 12 hours.

Lorazepam Drug Testing: How Long Does Lorazepam Stay In The Body?

Lorazepam stays in the body for a short time. Lorazepam usually takes a day or two to clear from the body completely. Lorazepam can be detected in blood, hair, and urine samples during drug testing.

How Long Does Lorazepam Stay In Blood?

Lorazepam stays in the blood for such as short amount of time because of the drug’s long half life. Exactly how long it stays in the blood depends on the dose taken – therapeutic dosage ranges from 1-10 mg per day, and someone abusing the medication might take even more.

How Long Does Lorazepam Stay In Hair?

Lorazepam can be detected in hair up to 90 days after the drug was first taken. The length of the person’s hair at the time of testing, as well as hair color or color treatments can affect the accuracy of the results.

How Long Does Lorazepam Stay In Urine?

Traces of Lorazepam can be found in urine for at perhaps a day or two. This depends on the dose of lorazepam taken, and if it’s been taken frequently in the past. Lorazepam addicts and abusers will have a harder time clearing this drug from their system, even after stopping.

Lorazepam And Addiction

Lorazepam is a habit-forming drug, and it is addictive. Users will develop a tolerance after just a short time, meaning it will take higher amounts of lorazepam to achieve the same results or effects as when you first starting taking lorazepam. Trying to quit lorazepam once you’re addicted or have a physical dependence can be very difficult because of the cravings and withdrawal effects it can cause. For this reason, lorazepam is never prescribed for long-term use.

Problems With Lorazepam?

Lorazepam does have unpleasant, potentially dangerous withdrawal effects. There is good news, though: it’s possible to get off the medication by tapering the dosage. If you want to stop taking lorazepam, talk to your doctor about a gradually decreasing your dose to make the transition as easy as possible. Doctors always recommend that you go through withdrawal with medical supervision. This can minimize the risk of adverse effects, and certain medications might be helpful to treat and ease withdrawal symptoms.

I am tapering adivan I am at 1.25mg from 3.25mg at this point I take .5 mg in the morning and no more until about 10pm but by 7pm I almost feel normal after all day being anxious, ithink I could sleep a bit with no dosing its weird. My question why is this and should I go to sleep without it and take it when I wake in the night

  2. I recently had drug screen. I take klonopin
I also have chronic pain. My urine screen showed lorazepam of 90. I take tylenol, extra strength bc, aleve, benedryl, lunesta and alot of supplements. Could any of this cause this false positive

  3. Please help me find out why my body is so shaky and i do notice when I take Lorazepoam I take one or two and hours later I feel somewhat better. I have neuropathy very bad and now frightened that I have taken this drug for more than a few months that is causing the walking and shakiness.
I need to know if I am addicted to Lorazepam

How do I stop this medication > I am 82 years old

  4. Can you misdiagnose ativan not being in your system? Or can there be a mishaps with the test? The drug is taken at .5 mg 1-2 pills every four hours but when the urine test was given it was said the ativan wasn’t detected so I’m wandering how is that

  5. I’ve been taking ativan for close to 24 years. I ran out before my doctors appt by a week because i was on vacation. It tested negative. I thought if you were a long time user it
woukd still be in my system. NIW my doctor wants to discharge me. Help?

So i havent had lorazepam in years but my anxiety has kept me up for 3 days so a family member gave me .5 mg lorazepam and I have a drug test tomorrow pretty sure its euther urine or sweat patch. Will it be out of my system in 16 hours? Its for DHS. I just couldn’t quit crying and being anxious on my meds for 3 days and needed to relax for a while and maybe get a nights sleep since my Ambien isn’t working either

  7. 1 1/2 Larazapam the next day after taking it the night before. I take it for RBD. Taking 1 1/2 mg before bed No energy the next day. Also taking 200 mg Trazadone and 400 mg Gabapentin 1 1/2 mg of Mirapex I have RBD. I was wondering if Larazeapam is caring over into the next day. Yhank you

  8. Hi I took 1mg lorazepam for 3 days now and I don’t want to take any more. I took it for 7 days straight in may and I had bad withdrawal symptoms like really bad anxiety. If I took a small dosage for only three days my body won’t be dependent on the drug? And avoid withdrawal symptoms?

  9. I am 92and have been on Lorazapam for 20 years, Dr. never checked to see if I was becoming addicted .I think Drs, did not think of addiction 20 years ago.can I get off them without muchtrouble? They have cut my dose from 2 mgs to 1 mg . I need to get off these pills. My wife is shaving of a little each night.

  10. If taking Lorazepam 3 times a day & you took it that morning of urine testing…will it show up in a standard drug test or is a more sensitive testing needed??? Because when I was tested for it even after taking it that morning the doctor said it didn’t show up in my urine until they did a more sensitive test & he cut me off cold without weaning for 3 months. And the doctor gave nothing as a substitute or help with withdrawal or my anxiety. Initially I was on 2 mg 2-3 a day. Now he gives me 1 mg at bedtime. Now I am experiencing the panic attacks, anxiety & realistic nightmares that wake me all through the night. How long is this going to last?? And isn’t it dangerous to cut someone cold from Lorazepam after being on it so long, instead of weaning??

  11. I took Lorazepam yesterday around 2 for shortness of breath which help me get some sleep throughout the day and about 4 a.m. I started to get like a small choking feeling and it comes and goes. It’s definately better than no breathe but should i be worried?

  13. I have been on Ativan for 30 years(2.5tabletd at night.) I am needing surgery in the near future and feel that I need to get off this drug first. What would you recommend.

  14. I have been on Lorazapam for approx. 7 years I recently tapered off and am quiting the drug , I took the final dose about 6 days or so ago I have been having tremors But worst of all Terrible cramps and don’t know if that is from quiting the drug I also quit Tramadol at the same time , my cramps are mainly in my legs but also in my stomach area , and I feel like my body muscles are drying up I went to urgent car they sent me to hosp thinking my potassium levels were bad , all my blood work was normal my ac-1 and all other levels what is going on ? no one can tell me , I have been to the doct twice this week , also been drinking lots of fluids justy to make sure it isn’t dehydration including some Gatorade ????

  15. I was curious as to how long 1mg ativan would stay in my system. They’re prescribed for anxiety&panic as needed. Im a 21 yr old female, 5’5 and about 125lbs if that makes a difference. When would it be safe to have a drink? I know both alcohol and ativan effect GABAS and don’t want to risk anything!

  16. I’m on Lorazepam daily. Why wouldn’t it show up in my urine drug screen?? I am on other meds..such as oxycotin, percocet, lexapro, Nexium, Vit. D supplements, & lisinopril. Would they affect the results? My doctor is saying no Lorazepam should up in my urine.
I have a serious spinal cord injury.I take all prescribed meds & this is the second time it didn’t show up. He is accusing me of not taking them or worse yet selling them…which I’m not. I was a correctional officer for many, many years & would not do anything illegal.

  17. Our Dr. has been freely giving out Lorazapam for 20 years and now he is 92 and they has cut the dosage 1/half his dosage . Think he will die. The Dr. says said th meds cause him to fall. It is not the meds , it’s only the lack of using his walker. He is now using the walker and no more falling. He can’t live much longer but I w@nt him to live a little longer. What do you think?

  18. How long last 3.5 mg Temesta in your system?
Is there difference with 5 mg Temesta? So 5mg temesta stays longer in the system?
When is the peak of 3.5mg Temesta? When is the peak of 5mg Temesta?
When is the effect gone of 3.5mg Temesta? After 8 hours?
When is the half live of 3.5mg Temesta? Does this means that the effect is decreasing during the day? So 5mg stays much longer a day in the system or is there no big difference between 5mg and 3.5 mg??

  19. I always see questions and responses about how long benzos stay in your system. But what about how ling does it take to show up on a urine test? Meaning if I take 4 mgs of ativan 2 hours before a urine test, is it going to show up?

  20. I believe I am being drugged with Ativan. When I start crying, how long do I have to still find it in my urine to catch the person since I have not been prescribed it?

  21. Hi I’ve be taking lorazepam since 2013 I want to stop taking it I feel it controls my life I take half of 0.5 mg a day is it possible to stop taking it ? .

  22. Please be kind to give me more information on Lorazepam as I have been taking it for about 5 years and want to stop. My Doctor feels I should remain on it as I had a lot of stress dealing with. It that right as I am a 60 year old woman who only
needs help to get off of this very nasty medication. Thank You for your reply.

  23. I have been on lorazepam for just about ten years. I was put on it after leaving the military. I have now made it to my second turn at day 4 w/o it. I started tapering off it this month. I have been given other mess to assist with withdrawals but I am concerned that my body can go into withdrawals again. When would you say I would be “in the clear” from these concerns?

  24. I failed an employment drug test because the medical officer said Ativan was not a benzo. What can I do. I have suffered emotional and mental stress as well as being out of work over 1 year because of this episode. I had a prescription for Ativan and told the medical officer. can I sue? If so, What type of lawyer would be best?

  25. Hello, I have chronic anxiety and so I was given 1mg of under the tongue Ativan. What I want to know is when it’s in that mushy pile is spit what do I do? I let some of it dissolve more and I swallowed the spit left over. It seems to be working I am just wondering how long this will last for, as having my anxiety I’m still mildly concerned about it giving out soon and me being forced into a anxiety attack head on.

  26. Kat,
The lorazepam dependence should wear off in 3 to 5 days. It has a fairly short half life (12 – 15 hours) but your dependence symptoms (sleeplessness, hunger for the drug, wretched feeling, etc.) will take a bit longer to go away. You can half your dosage for a few days…this will reduce the wretched feeling you have while detoxing off the drug, but you will still go thru some days of feeling bad. Whenever I am detoxing off of a drug I am physically dependent on, I usually slow down my dosage for a few days before I go cold turkey. However, it is usually pain meds like oxycodone I am coming off of. As I understand it, oxycodone isn’t as bad to come off of as is something like lorazepam, but I can’t tell you first hand.

I would suggest you half your dosage for a couple of days…then stop taking it for 3 to 5 days to see if the dependence symptoms go away easier. Be sure to talk to your doctor BEFORE you stop taking the medication in case there are other withdrawal considerations that you are unaware of in conjunction with your current physical condition and your current health.

Good luck to you and God Bless!

  27. I am taking lorazapam because I am having an operation in three weeks and am very nervous,I take one every other day and it is .5 mg.Will I get addicted.I don,t usually take any pills.

  28. I’ve been on Lorazapam for about 20 years for severe to modeate as time goes on anxiety! For some unBelievable reason it has not, thats NOT shown up in my blood and or urine the last 2-3 times taken! I SWEAR TO YOU I’ve taken 2-3 of these in the evening! EVERY Evening for years! How can it be it’s all of a sudden not showing up making me look like a liar?? It’s making me soo upset and emotionally to tears, which is causing me more anxiety! Why is this happening to me?? I can tell you more as you need to know about other meds I’m on. No street drugs at all EVER BUT AM ON PAIN MEDICINE FOR RECENT COMPLETE RECONSTRUCTION OF MY SPINE, woops, sorry caps! I’m 63 as well. Please help?!

  29. I had been taking Lorazepam for a year for sleep…every night. But my mind felt sluggish and I wanted off. I tried by myself but it was too painful. So I went to a doctor and he had me come in weekly and helped me taper off very slowly. I am soooo glad I am finally off of it. Going slowly really made a difference. It took me a long time to find something that helps. I have been using hemp oil and cbd together to help me fall asleep.

  30. I just started MMT and I don’t want to lose my Methadone…BUT…All the homeless people in my house have left me with stress 6 days without sleep is enough so I took 2mg Ativan…I had to sleep… The Hmless people are my lady’s sister her boyfriend and their 3 kids…None of These kids have seen more than a week of school in the last 3 years… And their methhead parents aren’t going to ever get their own house once my manager finds out they are here for a 4th time we’re gonna be homeless too…the kids are 7 12 and 16 years old and 3 years without school made them a few little morons…..

  31. My husband was taking lorazepam for anxiety only as needed and just a small piece of a pill. He started having trouble going to sleep and the dr prescribed Ambien. He took the Ambien and still didn’t sleep. He asked the dr what else he could do for sleep and the dr told him to take 2 mgs of lorazepam before bed to sleep. He did and finally was getting 4-5 hours of sleep. But quickly became addicted. He was on the lorazepam for about three months and we realized how horrible this drug was. So we started a slow taper. He has gone down from 3.5 mgs to now 1 7/8ths of a mg. We have been cutting down .25 mg every 10 days. This last taper, we didn’t cut for two full weeks and only tapered 1/8th of a mg and he is climbing the walls and super depressed. It just doesn’t seem normal to me that he should be this bad after 2 full weeks and only cutting 1/8th of a mg. I am concerned there is something more wrong with him. It’s as if he has a severe psychological addiction and just paces around saying “this is hopeless – I am never going to be able to do this. My life is over.” I am concerned something much more serious is happening. What do I do? Does he need to see some kind of specialist? I don’t know where to turn anymore. What is the right thing for me to do?

No lorazepam shows up in Urine analysis even tho I take them 6 am, 10am, 2 pm and 7pm everyday. I asked Dr. To schedule bloodwork to see whats up. Is it something I eat or drink making it bad? 35. I was prescribed .5 mg at night for sleep. I am 65 yr

  45. Hello,
I have never taken Ativan , but took two 1mg tabs 48 hrs ago. I had a job interview was offered employment contingent on 10 panel passing. This is prescribed for my wife who gave me permission. I was not thinking just nervous. I had not had a job interview in 15 years and did not consider this would come up.I’ve been very fortunate in my career. It will be 96 hrs when I take the test. Bad mistake on my part. Any hope here? Thank you.

  46. I mainly take clonazepam. My provider recently added lorazepam to decrease dosage of clonazepam. About that time I was expending more energy, began having tachycardia again & had to drastically increase my magnesium – essentiaI for adrenal fatigue. I have had severe adrenal fatigue since menopause & in 2011 & 2012, went 21 days & then 11 days straight with no sleep at all, trying to get off clonazepam. Doctors normally know zero about adrenal fatigue because it has no ICD code. Insomnia is a huge part of adrenal fatigue. I think the lorazepam is waking me frequently through the night, sometimes I just give up & get up for good at 2 pm or 3 pm. This just started happening since I started the lorazepam – not every night, but i am up & down frequently. Last night I didn’t use the lorazepam, just clonazepam & some natural substances & my essential magnesium. What do you think? Could lorazepam be interfering with the good sleep i get from clonazepam by itself? Thank you.

  47. Thank you for your information. It took me a long time to get off the darn stuff but I am off of it and free of it. I did it by tapering slowly…very slowly over many months. And now I am free of Lorazepam which is a blessing. I hated being addicted to it and between taking Methadone for RLS and Lorazepam my brain took a leave of absence. Now my brain feels better but I don’t sleep very well. I would rather not sleep well then be addicted to Lorazepam.

    1. Hi Rae. I am happy that you made it! I am sure your input here will serve as a motivation to other currently struggling with lorazepam dependence and withdrawal. I wish you all the best.

  48. I was prescribed 3mg of Ativan before a dentist Appt, the rest of that day is a blur, I know I took a nap. That night, 12 hours later, I had a beer and went to sleep. The next morning I still felt off. Around noon I had a few more alcoholic beverages and blacked out. I do not remember much from the day of my dentist appointment or that night. I have some memories from the following morning and nothing at all from that afternoon.
My doctors tell me it’s not possible the Ativan was in my system that long but I don’t see any other explanation.
I have always had sensitivity to Benadryl and cold meds not sure if they’re connected.
Could the beer that first night have prolonged the effects to the next day?

  49. Hi I’ve been suffering from panic disorder for 3months now. I finally took the step of starting ativan 0.5mg. I’ve taken once a day but only 4 times in past two weeks. 56. I have been taking 1mg lorazepam at night for 4 years, following a mental breakdown with anxiety. It seemed to fix me in just a few days and I have never overdosed on lorazepam, but it does still relax me and help me sleep. I am worried that if I come off the medication, that I may go back to the way I was before lirazepam. Is there really any problem with continuing on this drug, as I have been on 1mg for 4 years and never upped the dosage.

  57. I started taking 0.5mg of lorazepam 1 to 3 times a day, as per Dr about a month maybe a little longer. I didn’t always take it 3 times a day, but felt like I was dependant on it, so I just stopped 2 days ago. I feel lousy. How long before I feel better and lorazepam is out of my system

  58. Since June 2012, I have been taken Lorazepam, which makes it 4 years. I have chronic pain, which I was hit back in May 2012 with Transverse Myelitis, inflammation of the spinal cord. to make the long story short. The only medication that works for the pain, especially the pain in the rectum due again to the Myelitis is the Lorazepam 2mg. In June of 2016, I had an implant of a pain pump, but the pump is still not pumping what would take care of these chronic pain, according to the FDA the pump will be adjusted every 2 weeks, until it reaches the upmost narcotic into theses nerves, which they were never restored from the day I was hit. Therefore; until the pump administers the correct amount of dosage into my spinal cord, I must continue to take Lorazepam. Now when the pump starts working on my chronic pain. How long do you think it will take Mto wean down on the Lorazepam. I just don’t want to add another issue to myself -get dementia?

  59. you mention “certain medications” that would ease going off Lorazapam….can you tell me what those certain medications are so I can finish getting off the Lorazapam. I am tapering off and am at .125 dose each night but am afraid to quit completely because of the terrible feelings it creates.

  60. I have been taking 0.5 MG of ativan for the past month or so. It is not prescribed to me. I will be seeing my doctor in 20 days and he will be doing a urine drug test on me. He already knows I smoke Marijuana, but does not know about the ativan. I only take 1 tablet a night. Will it be out of my urine in 20 days? How long does it take to clear out of my urine?

  61. I took 10 mg of lorazepam yesterday and today I have a drug test on Dec 7 and I was wondering if that’s enough time to get that out of my system.

  62. My doctor recently changed my med dosages. He changed me from one .5 lorazepam every 8 hours to 1 clonazepam .5mg daily. I took my last dose of lorazepam 8 hours ago. How long should I wait to make the switch and how will it affect me? I take them the meds for panic attacks.

I also have chronic pain from three open wounds on my feet and leg (non-diabetic). I take one 7.5/325 Norco every 4 hours. He changed it to one 7.5/325 Norco every 6 hours. I don’t take the lorazepam together with the norco. Should I be ok with so many changes in meds?

    Thank you!

  63. I have been on lorazepam for 7years 2 mg. 1/2 in morning 1/2inafternoon and 1 mg at night. My question is I’m going for surgery and was told I couldn’t take it the night before and the following day . I terrified I will go though withdraws . What I’m I to do ?

  64. I was wondering why you have to cut lorazepam in half when tapering. Can you gradually taper the pill week by week and keep it at one dose a day

  65. I wanted to know how long it takes Ativan to leave your system for a urine drug test. My test is in 12 days and i wanted to take 4mg. Benzos make me nervous on how long they stay because last month I was 13 days from a probation meeting and I took valium. I read ita out of your system in 10 days but also read it’s the longest lasting benzo and can stay in for a month. 67. I’m trying to determine how it is that the amount detected in a blood test reveals the amount that was taken. There is the generality of the 2 mg tablet resulting in 20ng/ml two hours later, but I doubt that the relationship is linear and I wonder how it’s possible to know how much was taken if the time and circumstances were unknown. Can you point me to some more definitive research on this? Thank you.

  68. If I took 10mg of Ativan Tuesday at 2:00 will it show up in my urine test taken Thursday at 11:00?
Please advise need to prepare if it will show up.
    Thank you ,

  69. I was given 6 x 1mg lorazepam tablets at the hospital for anxiety / panic attacks. I took one during a panic attack and then only another af few days later. As the 1mg was making me groggy a psychiatric nurse said I can try only 0.5mg. 0.5mg worked well and I used 0.5mg at night for 4 nights – I then stopped using it as advised by psychiatrist. Would using such a small amount for such a short period cause withdrawal and how long would it take? I’m feeling foggy, headache, waking up a few times last 2 nights and slightly depressed. Thanks

  70. My nephew had a relapse. He took 45 (prescribed) Lorazepams (0.5 mg) in a 24 hour period. It’s been 5 days. Because of the high dosage all at once, does it take longer to get out of the system for testing? If so, approximately how long? He is trying to get into a sober living house and they will be testing his urine, they have zero tolerance for Benzos.

  71. On Wednesday I was given 3x1g Tavor before a minor intervention to reduce the nervous stress. Now, 4 days later, I am still feeling very sleepy all the time and I wonder when this effect will disappear. The intervention was a thermo-coagulation in my lumbar region as I suffer from chronic pain.

  72. Haven’t taken lorenzopam for 3 yrs.but I felt a little anxiety and I was working for 27 days I just want to unwind a little.i took it about 5hrs ago.i don’t drink much I take these pills like once or twice a is it ok for me to have a glass or 2 glass of wine

  73. my doctor prescribed Lorazepam for my anxiety stating “use as needed”. In order for me not to have a problem with withdrawal as I’ve had in the past going off cold turkey after a year taking 0.5 mg. each night… would you take this benzo so it won’t be habit-forming., i.e., every other day, twice a week and for how long, cuz I’m going for CBT as well and taking this too….I don’t want to have another bout of withdrawal, so when it states, “as need”, can you please explain short term in my case?

    1. Hi Soroh. Short term use of benzodiazepines is considered to be only 2 consecutive weeks at a time. But, since you need your medication continuously and will be using it for a longer period of time, make sure that you take it as less as possible. Also, when time comes to quit, it’s never recommended to do it cold turkey. Instead, lower doses gradually and slowly until you finally stop.

  74. Have been taking 2 mg Lorazapan for 11 years. Thought I weened off after three. Felt o.k. for several weeks. Now, several weeks later, hands have been shaking and I feel dizzy. Is this normal?

  76. Hey everyone detoxng off methadone to get on Suboxine. unfortunarely im on Ativan 2-3 months 1mlgrm aday almost everyday my doctor is 4 day detoxong me 1 mlgram for 2 days then a half then off…does this sound right

  77. I had no idea that lorazepam was so addictive. My Dr. prescribed (1 mg) it to me when I was going through a separation and I was struggling with anxiety. I still use it occasionally, now mostly to help me sleep when I have trouble. I have never experienced side effects or felt that I could not function without it. What would be a better as needed anti anxiety that is not so addictive and doesn’t have the level of side effects I’m learning that Lorazepam has? Of course I will discuss this with my Dr. when we meet next.

  78. started taking lorazepam 4 days ago. don’t want to take it any longer was taking xanax small dosage once at day. stopped taking the xanax when ER doctor gave me a prescription for 20 lorazepam.
I need to know how long will it take to leave my system I’ve taken a total of 3 tablets. ER doctor
gave me my first dosage through an IV.

  79. I forgot my lorazepam when I took a trip to Italy so stopped cold turkey now for three weeks after was on low dosage for 20 years but I feel okay just constipated should I,inform my doctor or will I be okay?

  80. Hi, I have been taking Lorazepam since March of this year.y Dr. Had me to take ot every night for panic/anxiety attacks during sleep as I develop insomnia from the panic attacks. However, I had been taking 1mg every night. As of June 1st, my doctor had me to start weening off by taking 1/2 until June 8th then I was supposed to just quit. I decided I would take 1/4th instead because I was afraid of the serious withdrawal effects. My doctor doesn’t yet know about this, but as much as I want to get off this medicine, I want to so it as safely as possible. I have already been experiencing some side effects such as muscle pain every now and then, nausea, loss of appetite, sensation of my skin itching or crawling… shortness of breath, a chest tightning… I am just seeking help and advice as to how I should properly taper/ween off the Lorezapam. Can you please give me the best advice…?

  81. Hi I have been on 1mg of lorazepam along with, lyrica, topamax, phentermine, Norco & flexeril for some time. I see a pain management Doctor. Every once in a while we get asked to take a urine test. No one ever said a word about there being a problem Now this new guy (via- skype which is stupid) says by the way out of the last 2 years or something 3 of your urine tests your lorazepam didn’t show up in your urine. Which i don’t think i have been asked to give more than 3 in the last 2 years anyways. So after being confronted (via tv) and asked what I’m doing with them, i tell them i take them 2 x a day morning and night as prescribed. Which i do. I took it this morning, what can i do to prove it to you. So they tell me i can go to the hospital and take a blood test on the spot. I jump right up and go. On my way out they warn me that if it doesn’t show up in my blood they will cut me off of the lorazepam IMMEDIATELY AND FOREVER!

I’m sorta freaking out here! They care nothing of my safety and for what reason it might not be showing up in my urine and possibly my blood. Can anyone possibly shed any light on the situation??? I know I went off of volume because it stores up in your body and can release all at once and can overdose you without you even currently on it. Should I be concerned?
    Thank you

  82. I take. 5 mg of lorazepam but i cut that .5 in half and take that half once in the took maybe 3 times before it stop making my drowsy now it doesnt make me drowsy because my body got immune to it..i take such a low dose because my body has a low tolerance for medication and not to mention im so tiny..although ut says as needed i take every day because i have GAD and my beart do funny stuff when im not on no meds from my anxiety attack..lorazepam works wonders

  83. Second trial for morphine pump implant tomorrow at 1:00p.m. not even a local really. Can I take lorazepam as usual at 10:00 pm night before? Paperwork says okay to take reg meds except for blood thinners and diabetic meds which I don’t take anyway

  84. My doctor want me to cut down my atvian pill from 1mg to half inwill like to leave it but i try it one day and i had a bad withdrawal symptoms

  85. I took a xanax monday but Ive in the hospital since Tuesday morning recieving iv fliuds. If they drug test me today which is Wednesday will I pee dirty?

  86. I never take lorazepam but took 3 0.5 last night, I have a drug test in a month should it clear out my urine by then?

  87. My Dr. gave me 1/2 mil tablets of lorazapam to get to sleep. I’ve been using off and on for probably 7 yrs. to sleep. Now, it seems, every night I need to take one to get to sleep. Should I try to stop. I never take more than 1/2 mil.

  88. I have taken lorazapam .05ng once a day for approx 35 days. This is my second day of having completely stopped. I was craving more but did not give into upping my dose. I hv mild nausea, headaches, yesterday I had the ” shakes” in the morning but that seems to have stopped. How long can I expect to hv withdrawal symptoms. I hv read terrible horror stories and I’m afraid. I’m 59 yrs old and weigh 125. I thank you for your response.

  89. I’ve been on lorazapam for about 5 years now. My problem is that it does not show up in my urine. I take .5mg twice a day. I took one about an hour before the last test. But the doctor is cutting me off cold turkey because I’ve tested negative 4 different times. First I’m scarred that he won’t wean me off- afraid of the withdrawals. Second , what is wrong with me that it doesn’t show? I’ve been told it’s not any of my meds causing the false negative!

  90. I have a brother-in-law that DOES NOT take Lorazepam, but his doctor says he has a large amount showing in his urine. He take lots of medication that does not go well with lorazepam. This is a very strange mystery, no one live.s with him, and he eats out a lot. Can you tell me how this can happen?

  91. I have been taking lorazepam 0.5 mg 3 times a day since like March 12th. I am having side effects and want to stop taking what do I do

  92. I have been taking 1mg of lorazepam for 3 years. 1 dose before bedtime. It was almost impossible to stop taking it. I cut the pill in half and did that for a month. Then cut that in half for two weeks. No success. Either psychological or whatever it hurt trying to stop. 4 months later I was told either stop the lorazepam or my pain medication would be decreased. That was a great incentive. I stopped taking it and despite the urge, I did it. A week later and I’m doing well. I suggest if you are thinking doing lorazepam for recreational use, think again.

  93. I am taking a flight and I normally take 1 mg lorazepam on the flight to my destination and another one on my flight home. The issue now Is that I am breastfeeding. Does this pose a problem for my 3 month old?

  94. I am 51 years old and I was taking 2mg of lorazepam (1mg in the morning and 1mg at night) for anxiety and insomnia for over a year. Prior to that I was taking Valium 10mg + for several years. Finally realized that my memory loss, dizziness, sometimes blurry vision and trouble swallowing was NOT due to menopause but actually side effects from the lorazepam. After researching this drugs I made up my mind to stop taking the lorazepam. I stopped cold turkey 7 days ago. I stumbled onto this blog at day 5 and after reading everyones post I got scared about stopping it cold turkey so I called my doctor and was able to see him today. He told me that I was pass the point of having a seizure taking “my dosage” into consideration (which is what I was fearing the most) He prescribe ten 5mg of valium for EMERGENCY ONLY. I haven’t slept well since I started and had two days with bad head aches but I am determined to win this battle. I started excising the day I quit, stopped drinking alcohol until I’m through with the withdrawals and started praying a lot. I will keep you posted on how I’m doing.

  95. Was taking Loraz .twice a day. Then 1 and a half twice a day . Now I take 1 a day 0.5 mg . I get stinging feelings in my body, wake up at night and sometimes want to cry. I want to start taking half of the 1 pill I am taking now. Will I ever get back to normal again? What should I do?

  97. I’ve been on lorazepam for five years I had severe panic attack like a month ago and I went to the emergency room because I skipped two doses I want to quit this Ned it’s like I have a monster inside my brain

  98. I took eight .5mg Lorazepams (on the weekend of March 12-13, 2016) and will have to take a standard drug screening urinalysis on or around April 11, 2016 and I cannot test positive! I swim 3x a week (at least), I also take Lasix (Furesomide) daily, and drink at least four 44oz waters every day. So how long will the Lorazepam stay in my system? Please tell me the probability is that I’ll test clean!

  99. I have been on lorazepam recently my doctor required a urine test which I was gladly to do. When the results came back the lorazepam did not show up in the urine even though I take the 2mg 4 times a day faithfully why is this happening. He didn’t say this but I feel he thinks I am not taking them, can you please explain. Thank you, Linda

  100. Hello, I was on Lorazepm, 1mg, for anxiety and insomnia for almost 2 years now. I recently find out it is not good for the body. So I have decided to come out of it. From 1mg, I reduced to .75mg for 12 days and then .5mg for the last seven days, till I could no longer handle the withdrawal symptoms. I can not sleep, feeling anxious, useless and lonely ) . I have been only sleeping for 2 hrs and wake up and cant seem to go back to sleep. I saw a naturopath four days ago, they Gave me L-Theanine/suntheanine and told me take 200mg before I sleep along with .75mg Lorazepam. They suggested me to go to .75mg for 30 days and then gradual go to .5mg. I have tried this, I am still not sleeping. Few days ago I was feeling very anxious and depressed, so I took 1.5mg Lorazapam with L-thenaine 200mg. It still didn’t work. I am sad and disappointed that I had to take more of lorazepam than I usually do and still could not sleep. Do you think I should stay with my old dosage for now ? and why was I not able to go to sleep even when I took 1.5mg ( more than what I usually take) ? and can I take L-thenaine along with lorazepam?
And tonight I took lorazepam, 1mg without L-thenanine.. I was not able to sleep. My monkey mind was acting crazy. So I took an another med my doctor gave Amitriptyline. It gave me weird night mare, I am glad I am awake now because of the crazy nightmare I had..I will never take this new one again.. Any advice on my Lorazapam and L-Thenaine would greatly appreciated. Thank you .

  101. hello… I am 60 and have been taking Ativan 0.5 mg and doxepin 50mg for35 days I stoped taking Ativan 3 days ago and still feel groggy and dizzy all day is it withdrawl from Ativan or doxpin someone please tell me

  102. I am going for drug testing in two days. I have taken a half mg of lorazepam for about two weeks now for sleep problems. Will this affect my results in the drug testing process?

  103. Does Lorazepam eventually not do its job? I have been taking .5 mg at bedtime for sleeping for 2 years +, and now I get to sleep, but wake up around 3:00 or 4:00a.m, and cannot get back to sleep. Then I feel horrible that day. Would it hurt to up my dosage just a bit?

  104. I have know ppl at times to snort their meds of which I think is not only dangerous, but totally retarded! It states that snorting lorazapam is dangerous, but it doesnt list what the dangers are. I recently heard of a person I know doing this. Could you please be more specific so I can let my friend know of this? Thank you !

  105. FYI for you folks out there that suffer from anxiety attacks. Doctors today are quick to prescribe Adavin/Lorazapan without considering the long term effects it can cause, nor do they counsel patients on the dangers that are associated with this drug. I suffered from anxiety attacks (and still do occasionally) and was prescribed Lorazapan as a matter of course from this doctor. I quickly became addicted and found myself self medicating to the point of finding myself at the drug store begging the pharmacists to fill my script early. I would also drive 40 miles to get one Lorazapan from a friend and also found myself trying to get it on the street when all else failed. I finally had to do a 30 day detox in a treatment center to get off Lorazapan. PLEASE don’t let this happen to you because coming off Lorazapan is a nightmare, there are other ways to deal with anxiety which you can research on your own, exercise and a healthy diet helped me a lot. BEWARE OF LORAZAPAN,!!!!!! it is a wolf in sheep’s clothing

  106. 113. This is a terrific web site. Thank you. I have been taking Lorazepam 1.5mg/day (3 x .5mg) for the past three years for anxiety. This is the only medication I am taking and I want to set up a reduced dosage schedule that will allow me to eventually stop altogether. I am not in any rush to accomplish this and am more concerned with avoiding withdrawal symptoms. Are there any guidelines I can follow to accomplish my purpose?
    Thank you.

    1. Hi, George. Thanks for the lovely words. We’re really glad that you find our info helpful. About reducing your dosage, I’d suggest you consult a doctor to help you plan an individualized tapering schedule just for you. Experts claim that gradually weaning the drug off is the safest way to quit it. Good luck!

  114. Just took two 1mg lorazepam tablets and may need to do a UA for work pretty soon. How long will it be detectable in my urine

  118. Very interesting comments here may I add,
I would like to comment on Carmen’s problem from Yesterday 11 dec2015 ,
I really feel for you Carmen, I have the same problem as you have , Doctors are showing a very cautious reaction into issuing Lorazapam I have been on Lorazapam for a few years now , due to the benzodizapine Tranxene being withdrawn from drug company’s , I have tried many other sleep remedies but none are quite like Lorazapam I have around 3 mg per night ,I have used these judiciously and other meds over the past 40 years being sensible with all drugs , aided for sleep , obviously I have a brain sleep imbalance but I have never had any real help , I am now 62 years old everyone would like to be drug free but its not easy for sufferers like myself , GPS over the years and indeed my psychiatric help , do agree I should stay on the drug after all this time I agree , with them However , I want to change my gp to a more local one to obtain my repeats but when I ask the prospective new GPS that I need to carry on my Lorazapam its met with oh we won’t prescribe those even when I have said they must be continued by psychiatry So back to you Carmen my GPS don’t really want to give me my meds let alone others I am really at my wits end I have little tablets left and my Xmas will now be ruined by GPS and red tape bureaucratic measures we are people I understand GPS reluctance to give but we all must be helped or I feel my life will now be at risk due to no sleep and could die ,, Carmen and others like me need help thank you all for reading this …..

  119. I was taking lorazepam for two months and I stopped them the doctor gave me Xanax to get off lorazepam I stopped those in two days…now I’m not taking anything how long before I feel better and can get some sleep

  120. After an acute 4 days of panic attacks about 3 weeks ago, a new nurse practitioner I saw said “OMG, you shouldn’t be on this.:” 21 years of 3 mg Ativan per day. I’ve been off 1 mg for about 5 days and got the shakes and flu-like symptoms. A first rate doctor I know started me on Tegretol and that stopped the shakes and after about a week I don’t have flu-like symptoms today. I also have cold and itching feelings and hot flashes and sweating. Do I need to go very, very slowly off? I’m 60.

  121. I had a panic attack 2 years ago, my primary doctor prescribed me fluaxetine 20mg in the morning and lorazepam 1mg at night. After a year I started feeling like I didn’t need to take both so I stopped taking fluaxetine and I kept taking lorazepam every day at night. Not knowing that it would become an addiction.
Now I been suffering for about a month with this anxiety and fear of going crazy. I tried bio-magnetic pair therapy, it helped a little after 2 sessions . I went to get acupuncture and they gave me some natural medicine to help with the anxiety and depression. I was told to stop taking lorazepam and just take what they gave me. My question is would it be ok just to stop it? My body has consumed it for 2 years, and I really want to get off of it. I want something that’s going to cure it not just control it for a while.

  122. Hi. I am currently taking 3mg per day of lorazepam, for 7 years now I have been prescribed, I recently have decided to go off this medicine. If I quit cold turkey, will I experience death? I have been in suclusion for 48 hours without and have not felt any symptoms but sleeplessness and agitation, will I go through anything more?

  123. I live in Texas & I’ve been in Ca. For the past month with my mother & I have severe sleep deprivation & anxiety. She gave me 2 mg of Ativan to help me fall asleep & manage anxiety for the past 3 weeks. I have taken it in the past prescribed by my Dr but not any longer. My neurologist in Texas put me on Roseram which didn’t work & next is Belsinra. Long story short I need to know how long before Ativan WONT be detected in my system through a urine sample? Although it was not prescribed to me I’m not a recreational drug user. I want to clear my system of this drug because I’m applying for a new job plus I don’t like the side effects. I’ve been through every drug on the market & the only one that worked was clonazepam 4 mgs per day. That was way too much & I wasn’t functioning well & didn’t want to become dependent on it. I’m still struggling finding a solution but most importantly I have NEVER failed a drug test & I don’t want to start. Could you please help me with information requested.

  125. my 88 year old mother has been prescribed Lorexepam for anxiety. she is on a low daily dose 1.5mg. She has been taking this for some time and we have noticed she has been complaining of blurriness to the point that she is now unable to see. She does have glaucoma and we have been told that as this is a very low dose it won’t affect her eyes. I wish to be reassured that this is the case. I myself have had a sleeping tablet half dose and experienced blurring to the point I could not see for a whole day in one eye. It turned out I have an epiretinol membrane in this eye and the sleeping tab let would have affected my sight. She is now suffering depression due to her lack of sight. Eye specialist and GP have said this drug would not affect her eyesight but on the various websites showing the side effects all mention blurriness.

  137. I tapered off Lorazapam after 10 years on this at 4mg per night then 2mg. I am not getting to sleep until 4-5 AM and feel jittery, anxious and have a dull empty feeling. Is this from being of the drug or lack of sleep? I am just exhausted.

    1. Hello Arlene. I believe those are symptoms of withdrawal. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about how to manage these effects and lower their intensity, so your detox will be more comfortable. Keep in mind that as time passes and you are off the drug, these symptoms will subside and you will no longer be experiencing them in a while.

  138. My doctor prescribed me Ativan when I was rushed in the emergency room on Tuesday. A dose of .5ml to help ease my very bad anxiety, trembling body, panic attacks etc. It helped me a lot to calm down and I was anxious to take it too because I don’t like taking any medicine. Though it helped me nap for a little bit. I’ve only taken it twice (.5ml) and my last dose was more than 24hrs ago. Though I’m having very bad panic attacks, depression, muscle cramps, trembling, high and slow heat rate and insomnia last night, dizzy etc. I wanted to ask if it is due to the Ativan. If so, how long will it take for me to be to the way I was. I don’t feel myself as if I’m not here and I don’t like that feeling.

  139. I need withdrawl help so many medical issues now how do i get off? Am taperng 1/8 mg every 2 weeks only was at 1 now 0.5 withdrawl symptoms serious anything that can help ease them?

  140. I was in the hospital for a severe anxiety attack Monday night they gave me what they explained was a heavy dose of ativan. It is now Friday. Since then I have had zero appetite barely been able to eat anything without feeling sick and have been sleeping for unusually long times. Is this normal? I’m also experiencing anxiety but that’s probably from not eating. Help please. I had to leave on vacation in the middle this and it really is the worst.

  141. I was taking .25/day or .5/day for about 6 weeks. Some days I skipped taking any. 10 days ago I took my last dose of .5mg and stopped cold turkey. The next night I had a strong hot flash, and have had a rapid heart beat, insomnia and lack of appetite. My primary care doc said I didn’t need to wean and that these aren’t withdrawals but I believe they are. I am not having hot flashes anymore and anxiety is better now, but do you think these are withdrawals? And at such a low dose, should my insomnia stop soon? I am going to a cardiologist today for the heartbeat..

  142. I have been on lorazepam for 24 days and my dr took me off it so I stopped cold turkey. Last night fort night without it and I did not sleep any…I was in bad shape…nausia..diarhea..constant.then all day today…diareha…also trembling …cold shaking…Is it from coming off it even tho just for 14 days…on…Milliem

  143. I’ve been taking 4 to 8 mg of Lorazepam for 1yr. How long should it take if I start gradually tapering off now. If i cut it 25% a month would that clear my system and not have withdrawls.

  144. ive taking 1/4 of ativan dosages 05mg since march almost everyday since then some days i didnt take one this is the only thing that helps a little with my anixity and panic attacks. ive tried so many other pills like zoloff, lexpro, zanac, prozac, plus alot more all made me worse. i am so sensetive to meds usally i take baby motrin for headaches. im afraid of getting hooked to ativan doc keeps telling me i wont because i take such a small amount is he right.

  145. I took the prescription drug 1mg Lorazepam one time but I still feel weird what can do I feel as if i might fall or get a lil faint what to do

  146. I was .5mg of lorazepam every night for about a week and a half to 2 weeks for my anxiety, and it worked wonders. My anxiety is gone or so it seems at least. But about a week into it i’d start getting what seemed like between dose withdrawals cause i missed two doses and then started again and when i started again, my symptoms disappeared, so i stayed on for a few days, missed a dose and felt fine, kept taking them for a few more days, and the symptoms got ALOT worse in between doses and i went back to a walk in clinic, the same the prescribed me the lorazepam, and i told them all what was going on and my side effects and they said i can just take them as needed and if i wanted i could take half of the .5mg, and i said i’ll just quit it completely. But i took one that day after i went to the doc cause i had a panic attack. I’ve been off of lorazepam pretty much cold turkey i suppose since i never decreased the dose, just skipped a few doses, but yeah, i’ve been completely off of them for a week now and the first few days were almost impossible, couldn’t eat, and eventually couldn’t even drink anything not even water. My worst symptom has been stomach pain and cramps, and no appetite and super awful fatigue and maybe some depression because i did cry quite a bit the first few days and once today just a bit, and nothing seemed to interest me and i just felt like i was dying and such. But about 4 or 5 days in i felt normalish, i could eat, drink, even sleep again, laugh and be happy again, and function. Just had a little brain fog. But last night, which was day 7 without lorazepam, my symptoms came back and this morning i’ve and pretty much all day felt like how i did when i had the other symptoms. I’m still eating a bit and drinking water, it just feels more like a chore than me actually enjoying it. I’ve been blessed with pretty great health most of my life and this just feels like hell that will never end. My symptoms now are red veins in my eyes and the whites are a tad dark from most likely lack of good sleep, stomach pain which compared to how it felt the first few days in, is somewhat minor, and what seems like oral thrush, the papaille on the back of my tongue are whiteish yellow and i’ve been brushing my teeth twice a day and washing it out with saltwater once a day, for 3 days, and has gotten slightly better. But i still have those slightly large bumps on the VERY back of my tongue and the saltwater washouts have reduced the size of them somewhat. I’m 17 years old, male and too young to be worrying about my health like this, plus i’m very skinny with a high metabolism, i’m 5’9″ and about 125 pounds. I’m just wondering if these are normal symptoms after a cold turkey, and if it was possible that i got addicted and now am just going through withdrawals even though i was on such a low dose for such a short period of time? And if they are withdrawals, about how long can i expect these symptoms and such to persist? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

  147. My grandmother has been taking Ativan for 11 years. She is 101 years old. It was prescribed for her when she lost her daughter. I think she has been over medicating herself with this medication. She has become disoriented at times. I have started living with her and took the medication from her. Now she is begging me for the medicine and very angry with me. I refuse to give the medicine to her because I think she is addicted. Is this okay?

    1. Hi Denise. After 11 years of taking Lorazepam, it is definitely not ok to abruptly stop completely or lower doses, especially not for an elderly patient. Take your grandmother to the doctor and get a tapering schedule that will help her wean down slowly and carefully. Also, over-the-counter medications can help her suffer less from withdrawal symptoms.

  148. If your 38weeks pregnant and u took a half of a 1mg larazapam how long would that stay in the unborn childs system if you normally dont take the medication?

    1. Hi Sherry. You currently share blood, so your metabolism is doing the elimination. Your baby’s system will be clean when yours is. In a day or two (tops) all Lorazepam and it’s metabolites should be eliminated.

  149. Hi, I have been taking 2 mg of Ativan at night for about 2 years. I went to my Dr and she told me to cut the dosage every 3 days(1 1/2 for 3 days, 1 for 3 days and 1/2 for 3 days then stop). Is this safe?

    1. Hi Donna. I feel it’s a rather fast taper and may cause you to experience harsh withdrawal symptoms. I’d recommend you to cut back 20-25% off your current dose every week. It may be slower, but it’s safer. Also, don’t forget to be prepared with some home remedies and general over-the-counter medications to help you treat withdrawal symptoms as they occur.

  150. Was prescribed 1. 5 mg of Lorezepam four months ago as I have severe anxiety. Lorezepam was to be used until Citalopram begun to work. The citalopram has not helped but the lorezepam helped me sleep. I am still severely anxious and have to withdraw the lorezepam in this state. Have withdrawn just 0.25 mg and feel even worse anxiety as well as just feeling ill, light headed and weak and terrible agitation. If this is the beginning of the taper , will I feel like this for months ?can hardly get out of bed and feel I can’t cope with a day of let alone months. Have already had severe anxiety for five months but this is a whole new level. Also terrified of getting blurred or double vision. Already find it very difficult to read close to as if my vision has been altered. If blurred vision is a withdrawal symptom ,is is constant or intermittent and how long would it be until vision returned to normal?

  151. I have been on Lorazepam for at least three years. I take 1.5 mg at bedtime. It is taking a while to get to sleep now and then I am tired in the afternoon. It is affecting my stomach. I am also diabetic. My dietcian wants me off this drug. She fears it maybe the cause of my increases in sugar etc. I have tried to just take 1/2 a pill but had terrible dreams of what went on when my Alzehimer/Dementia husband was at home etc. Shall I try again to take 1/2 a pill each day and then what? Thanks for your support.

  152. I’ve been up for 24 years my mother gave it to me she was in the medical profession when she was dying I want off this drug it makes me too tired it doesn’t work anymore it makes me too depressed it gives me headaches I need help with this

  153. I was on 2 mg. of valium for l0 years and tried to get off. Went 3 months and could not sleep. Went to Dr. and he gave me Ativan and now I am back where I started. What should I do. Trying to see a psychiatrist but they either are not taking patients and they won’t take medicare. Please give me some advice. thank you

    1. Hi Maggie. You can call the helpline number you see on our site to talk to treatment providers and find adequate and professional help. I hope this helps and good luck.

  154. Hi, my husband has been taking Ativan and other benzo’s on and off for years to treat insomnia. He has also been taking Paxtine for over a decade and has (under doctor’s advice) recently increased the dose to 2.5 tablets per day. What I am worried about is that he has also increased the frequency and dose of Ativan to 8 tablets every few days. He seems more afraid of not sleeping than side effects of the drugs. I am worried about him driving and becoming addicted. Any suggestions?

  155. I wish everyone the best of luck with this drug,, i am off of it ,, and never want to take it again,, i will be leaving this conversation, i have already found out what i wanted to find out ,,, take care ,, and God Bless

  156. Wondering how long (1) 1mg tab will remain detectable for urine test sent to a lab for analysis? Thank you.

  157. hello dyslexic,,, i was on ativan for sleep problems.I did not need it for anything else,, which i still have sleep problems. the doctor never told me it was addicting ,, until i had withdraws from it the all hang broke loose. but i am over this problem, i still wake up during the night 2-3 times but i can go back to sleep ,, some times i wake up and it takes an hour before i go back to sleep. my other medicine is to keep me from hurting myself, and to keep myself together, but with the Good Lord’s help I will make it. oh by the way ,, sleep problems are handed down through the parents,, read about it ,,so every body can thank their parents for giving them something in life. 🙂

  158. I have not stopped the 3 mg. of lorazepam, due to the reasons, I need to take, when panic attacks hit etc. Can’t be in an inclosed space either.
I do not have a reg. Dr. per say, but just enough, to not be fined or whatever, for not having a provider in this state.
The Dr. who I last saw, was a FNP… don’t see Dr.s here…!!!!!!! Anyway to cut all the history out of this, and possible surgery coming up, or hope I get the help to have it done, the FNP called me at home Friday……………..I am soon to go over to the Clinic I go, and see whom I can talk to about her call, that was like a black mail, and refusing to refill my medicine. Incensitive, Rude, and just attacking me. Needless to say, I did hang up on her, when my panic attack came on, and I know my blood pressure, was very high. (not on medicine for that)
I should not have even got that call….I don’t get any high from the medicine, just helps to slow down the attack.

She did refuse refill with CVS, but got a message later from CVS, got one refill. I have a high blood pressure, when even go or think of this mess in the medical field here. If I could get a lawyer, I would. After a long medical problem back in 1988 plus, and a nightmare went through, and to this day, I need a physical each year….anyway, that is another horrible ordeal of trying to get the medical field to follow through here. I have been on Lorazepam, probably since 90’s , not sure, but after all the female problems I had and medical treatments went through. I also developed CFS and Fybermyalgia, after all the ordeal went through.

I just don’t know what my rights are anymore. They can POT for the state…..which has worse possibe effects, like cigs.

She is also trying to stop my Estrogen shots need to get for the prevention of female problems, even though it has its side effects….

So I fill trapped and might have to go back to where I am from to get into my Drs. back there.

I am sorry going on as I am.

  159. My 18 year old son started taking Ativan for catatonia. He is out of the catatonia now and has been on Ativan for 4 months. He takes 9 mg total 3 times a day. Should be expect severe withdrawal effects when he starts to get weaned off this medication?

    1. Hi Carolina. If his doses are lowered gradually and slowly, he should be clear of all abrupt and severe withdrawal symptoms. However, this does not mean that withdrawal will be completely avoided. He may go through some discomfort, especially during the first 2-3 days of a dosage decrease, but they can be successfully treated with other medications like general over-the-counter medicines or natural and herbal remedies. I wish him an easy and successful recovery!

  160. Been on Lorazepam, 3mg. a day or as needed. I have severe panic attacks, and with other medical issues. I have ran into a situation in my move to where I now live, after living somewhere else most of my life. I am 67 now, and the treatment and doors being slammed on me to have any treatment, even with high blood pressure , and more, would take a novel to write. They say Ma. has the best. !!
I got a call yesterday at home, from a FNP I saw for a physical, that turned out to be a chew out session. Rather than what went for. Been threatened, refused to refill, unless I go to a psychologist. The clinic I go to for 7 years now, have done my refills for it. There is another one also, but not of the same line of medicine. My only option is to see if my Dr. in Co., will take me as a patient if I go back, for an appointment. She won’t taper me off gradually. I will end there.

  161. Call me crazy (okay I am). But why are so many people using Ativan regularly? It’s supposed to be used for intermittent relief of anxiety symptoms when they get unmanageable. The best way to get a tolerance for Ativan and get hooked on it is to take it at regular intervals, especially when used for sleep. Sooner than later, tolerance will occur and you WILL need more just to get to sleep. And if you come off, even slowly, you will experience insomnia. There are far better and safer sleep aids out there, and far better treatment methods for generalized anxiety. For panic attacks, Ativan is a lifesaver. But if you’re having 3 or 4 attacks a day and eating Ativan like candy, you should not be trying to “live a normal life” with a big bottle of Ativan in your pocket – especially if you work on work sites or drive for a living. People having regular panic attacks on an ongoing basis who rely on ativan to get through their day (for weeks or months) are going to sson realize they need more ativan to “stop” or manage an attack. When discontinuing, the rebound effect of anxiety coming off ativan is terrible. There are better treatments, like low dose imipramine, sometimes gabapentin, xanax, buspirone, various anti-depressants, atypical anti-psychotics or even propranolol. I would see a psychiatrist who specializes in anxiety disorders and get a med for chronic anxiety that is NOT so habit forming. I would also never use ativan regularly for getting to sleep – there would be no faster way to get hooked in my opinion. I’m not a doctor, but I’ve suffered from anxiety issues my whole life, with panic attacks coming and going. The trick for me was to find other ways to manage the anxiety and ONLY use ativan when panic attacks got out of control, or when I was facing an extremely anxiety provoking situation, or going into a “triggering” situation or place. After using Ativan on and off, only as needed, I have never been hooked and never plan to be. If a doctor is giving you ativan in regular dosing intervals for weeks or months, get a second opinion. Adding drug addiction to an already stressful life situation is NOT going to help with your anxiety levels!

  162. I was prescribed Lorazepam for sleep and seizure backup control 1 mg. nightly for over 20 years. I got off the drug by reducing .125 mg every 4 weeks over a 7 month period under a doctor’s care and am still unable to sleep more than a couple of hours nightly. I have been off the drug completely for over a month now and am wondering when and if I will ever have a decent night’s sleep again. Thank you.

  163. Good luck to you NORMA , Prozac is a good AD , you will be on the generic now if scripted by you doctor, real PROZAC cost 10 times more than FLUOXETINE they now give. you had strange side effects to Ativan constipation is not a usual side effect for anxiety , the opposite in fact. I take 6MG a day and can have sex anytime . ejaculation problems yes but that’s more to do with LEXAPRO the AD I take . PROZAC ie FLUOXETINE will in time mess with your sex life far more than Ativan and constipation is a problem with most AD,s So if you have been on Prozac less than six months you will be cool , long term is when the sex side effect of ADs kick in. Some complain about generic Prozac not being has strong has the real Prozac but this works fine for you, but try to keep the same generic name has chemists buy in the cheapest from all over the world REAL PROZAC is made by 1 company alone so no bad meds. YOU should never have been given Ativan just for sleep problems your doc is a dummy.

  164. I had been on ativan for 9 years an 8 months ,, too long for me ,,, and did not no it was addicting,,, it had stopped me from any sex desires,,, or going to the bathroom no 2,,,this is not good ,,, now i have both of them back after getting off this drug,,,,so this will be my last conversation ,, good luck everyone ,,, if you still want to take this drug,,,, May God Bless.

  165. I took lorazepam yesterday and I have a drug test tomorrow, will I pass the drug test? I will be tested for LORAZEPAM . I took a 50$ detox drink today and been drinking alot of water, the urine test is tomorrow. Will I be ok?

  166. I was born BIPOLAR this med Ativan you all want off is the only think that keeps me alive. I wont take phsycotic meds the weight gain is to great. and growing up I didn’t want to be fat. I was a ladies man so I drank instead to dull bipolar in depression, and road out mania in a blaze of glory. I take 5 mg of Lexapro a day the best ssri AD there is and 6 mg Ativan. I once had a habit of 8 to 12 mg a day ,I had saved all my scripts I never used when young I had hundreds of Ativan , I had a breakdown just through bipolar , and when to a NHS shrink who stopped dead all Ativan not believing I took that many has the scripts were for far less, I mean the ones I was taking from a stash were 10 to 15 year out of date but still worked. He sent me away with a Effexor script I week later I tried suicide saved only by a bottle of brandy making my throw up and alerting my family. I spent 3 week in mental hospital still not given Ativan , sitting in cold walk in shower most of the day letting the cold water cool my on fire body. I lied my way out hospital put the Effexor down a drain and went to my GP gave me back against the hospital wish 4mg Ativan a day and saved my life, I detoxed the other 4 to 8 over 8 months locked away in my music room. EVERYONE reacts to meds in different ways Ativan works on me with Lexapro every day, I have after 8 years just gone up to 6mg Ativan but still not bad hike in 8 year period.I may even need more later but so what I am dead without them . I AM NOW 67 and lived 20 lives

  167. I really hope no one has to go cold turkey like I did, getting off of ativan. It is a very horrible drug to go cold turkey off of. take care God bless you all who have to take this drug.

  168. I have regular blood test for medication reasons, I am asked to fast on the day but still take all meds including 6mg of Ativan , nobody has ever said its blocking the test or showing up in them.

  169. i was never given detox. and whatever that is i really don’t need it. Prozac is all i need, I had taken it many moons ago, it was different from this pill, which i like this one better, don’t even no i even have it in my system. the other prozac pill i did, it made me drowzy , Depression runs in my family, i inherited it. But there are secrets that I do to keep me unsuppressed and it works too.

  170. Hi Samuel. Although it may seem uncommon, it’s not unheard of. In fact, a great number of people who take Ativan (lorazepam) even for years have had drug tests come back negative for the presence of the drug. Why? Well, that’s not explained yet. But it is more common than one would assume. Maybe you can ask for another test to be done, or a hair test if the urinalysis keeps coming back negative.

  171. I take 1 mg of Ativan 3 times a day and sometimes a bedtime, for acute anxiety. I had blood fasting the next morning and didn’t take meds. My V.A. Dr. Thinks I don’t take them . It showed negative the next morning. If I miss one dose the starts a nervous queasy feeling. Than you.

  172. I took 2mg of Ativan Friday 2mg on Saturday 4mg on sunday and 4mg on Monday. I have a drug test on wendesday will be able to pass?

  173. My Father in Law has has a Massive Brain Stem Stroke…..he is 81y/o n the Night Nurse was told NO Ativan she did it anyway Sunday night!! We did get him in rehab they moved him Monday and he has been asleep since Sunday night!
We know that 2/3 of people that have the type of stroke he did die.
So I was trying to find out how long it would be in his system or is he sleeping due to stroke?

  174. Tapping is hardly used at all now it never took of in England its just like any passing fad , if you want to believe it you will,it wont cure any chronic anxiety . ANTIBIOTICS should not be given on phyc meds unless your life depends on them then you don’t have a choice. Your chemical mishap is depression and if suicidal thoughts should be treated with AD,S. Please don’t bring God into a mental health problem , if you believe he will help, why did he let have this problem in the first place.

  175. I’m currently on 1mg of Lorazapam. Had to start taking it due to a chemical mishap in my brain caused by drug interactions. (I told the doctor I was taking a mood stabilizer and an anti-depressant, but she said it was NO PROBLEM to take his lethal dose of antibiotic at the same time)….clearly it was a problem! But I’m hoping to get off the Lorazapam soon (slow taper I guess) as it wakes me with suicidal thoughts. Anyway…. ALL WHO READ THIS…. please check out
This sight helped me tremendously in learning how to overcome my anxiety and severe panic attacks! Also, a drug free way to “fix” your brain is with tapping. ( It seems weird, but it works! And in a blind test of 5,000 people with SEVERE ANXIETY DISORDERS AND PTSD (Yes, I have that too), the first group was treated with behavioral therapy and/or meds. The second was treated only using tapping. The meds group were 51% symptom free while the tapping group was 76%!!! It’s SOOO worth trying!!!
Praying for us all – it’s a hard road, but God loves you and plans to see you through!

  176. TAN , This is strange to me I have the opposite effect . I am 67 on Thursday and my hair is still brown , Its not megga thick but its not mega thin , I don’t have bald spots just age thinning I keep it short grade 4 back and sides and longer on top with a parting , I put hair gell on and look ok for an old guy. The only time I lost hair was taking Effexor and detoxing ATIVAN the opposite to what you say. ANXIETY makes your hair fall out quick and turns you grey kill the anxiety

  177. I used lorzapam for a year. It made me lose more than half of my hair. I saw the percentage of people who got back which is around 17 percent out of 80 percent who didnr get their hair back yet. What did the 17 percent do? Im very sad about my hair please help. Ive been off lorzapam for 10months if not more. No hair recovery. Taking all vitamins and no under lining. Im sure its lorzapam. From seeing another one havingthe same problem and by researching. And cause I never really lost hair like that until use.

  178. Prozac is given with detox to help detox symptoms , but then you detox Prozac a year or so down the line . Prozac is a great med on its own it helped my anxiety when it first came out , I gained a lot of weight and came off. It never worked again for me when it went generic in the middle of using it i crashed. there will never be a sleeping aid with no side effects like any med. Just think if they was at would get abused by people who want to sleep 24-7 . the only sleeping aid is stay up at night till you feel tired , no matter what time.

  179. speaking about breathing,, my breathing was off for 3 months, because of ativan. My mental health doctor had to give me Prozac to get my breathing right. Ativan will mess a person up, they need to take it off the market, and come up with a non-addicting drug that will help a person sleep at night all night long.

  180. I wish they would take the drug off the market, they can come up with something that is not addicting and help people sleep throughout the night. I just found out I have insomnia I take something to make me fall asleep, but I wake up during the night several times. Some of the sleep aid they have on the market is ok, but a person can’t take it like a prescribed medication sleep aid. I have tried, it only works 1 time for me.

  181. Chelsea if it bothers you don’t take it, when I have chronic anxiety I would have walked on broken glass if they said that worked . If you thinking about it you don’t need it . CHRONIC ANXIERTY can even make you lose your bodily functions with fear , now that is a case for ATIVAN, I take a big dose but there is still lots of things I cannot do . like go abroad I have to have my home has a sanctuary to return to . CHRONIC ANXIETY you do what you are capable not what is asked, Ativan gives me back a life without rear. Tolerance so what I don’t care I am lost without benzo help. If you feel nothing like this and gan WORK, PLAY ,TRAVEL don’t take it

  182. not sure if I have anxiety but breathing been weird and think its causes me to panic cause my chest and head fell funny. scared to take this med now for 3wks….. haven’t even started. today I fell worse and thought about it but still scared due to addiction of this pill and withdrawl. thought about takeing aleeve to see if the “pain” goes away thus making me not as stressed about it but if I do need this pill today can I take it with aleeve and if I only take 1/2 1mg will I be ok next day with withdrawl. thanks

  183. If you wanting off Ativan for sleep aid and the mg is low . stay up later at night till your body closes you down and half the dose , I take 2mg for anxiety and tolerance at 9pm every night it 2mg out my 6mg a day but I don’t go to bed till at least 2 am. Never go to bed when not tired ,you will look at the ceiling all night . Also people don’t think because Ativan is out you system after 12 hours don’t think that’s the end of them . If I stopped my 6 mg a day cold I would be out my brain in 2 days .I an 66 and now and can never withdraw I don’t want to either, I will always have anxiety so I will always need Ativan , unless they bring out a new drug

  184. Hi Judy. Lorazepam is advised to be used for 2-4 weeks because it is one of the most addictive sleeping tablets on the market. Your dose is small and you also do not take it very frequently, but it may easily get out of hand. So, please be very cautious and if possible try using another sleep aid.

Hi Ernestine. Have you tried with any alternative ways to relax, a chamomile tea before bed, a nice warm bath, relaxing music, meditation…if the Lorazepam is not treating the conditions you are taking it for, you may need another medication or a different dose. For how long have you been taking it?

  185. I’ve taken Lorazepam for over 5 years ..started on a low dose but now at 2 1/2 mg each night for insomnia. I would like to get off it..tried it once but was so ill for 3 days and was awake all night while not taking it.. consequently I had to go back on it. What can I take to make me sleep as I taper off the Lorazepam.

  186. I am 78 yrs of age Started taking 0.5 mg once a day of Lorazepam because I was nervous and could not sleep. Now I still do not sleep well and feel depressed. Stopped taking for 2 days felt very good . On 3rd day I thought I was nervous and took another pill. I want off .What do I do ? Thank you

  187. I take one half mg. sometimes (3-4 times per week for one month), before sleep, as I have anxiety and can’t sleep. What about tolerance? I don’t want to increase dosage. I would appreciate any comments.

  188. if my girlfriend has taken 2mg ativan for a few days. I’d say maybe two a day. How long will it take to flush out of her system?

  189. Another thing while I am on a role , people will say I take point 5 of a tablet and I don’t feel anything???????? you wont its not enough. You are taking enough when I works that’s all there is to it could 1mg a day or the max a doc will give 10mg a day . You feel dizzy , of course you do there is a Benzo in your head stopping anxiety , YOU DONT GET AWAY SCOTT FREE

  190. lets get thing straight from the off , doctors and shrinks don’t like you on Loz ie Ativan ever since the big law suit that the patients lost 20 years ago , I would die without Ativan 6mg aday every day and 5mg Lexapro . I made this treatment not some luppy shrink I no my own body . don’t ever try detox cold you will finish in hospital, infact if it works don’t try dtox full stop , why should you do you want to be ill again. If you have a life long anxiety problem you need life long treatment and that is Benzos that all there is. therapy from someone thats never been ill wont help. Except you need them and half you problem is over , its not your fault you ill , Ativan is used in every hospital in England has front line anxiety situation, the only thing better is morphine and you wont want that every day . people take heart tablets and blood pressure tabs, diabetic , so what the big deal with anxiety tabs .

  191. I saw a new pain specialist in October and he did a urine test on me. I had taken a few ativans because I ran out of my Xanax and it showed up in the test he said I would be cancelled if it shows up again. How could it still be in my system and how long for it to leave my body.

  192. I have been taking 1/2 of 1mg tablet each morning for anxiety for about 2 months now. What are my chances of addiction if I continue say for another month. I also take citalopram 10mg each night(just started) Thank you I am 75 years of age

  193. Hello Brenda. Call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 to talk to a poison expert. They’ll assess your risk of overdose and provide advise and guidance on what you should do next. If you don’t feel OK-Call 911 right away.

  194. took lorazepam from 6:30pm till 10:30pm about 3/12 mg. Is it still in my system? I did not mean to take that much, it was by accident. I took some every hour trying to get to sleep.

  195. I was prescribed avitan for anxiety. 0.5 mg, 30 pills. I did not take them every day in a period pf 1 1/2 month since I dont like eating these pills. After using them up I asked for more, since my anxiety started increasing. I received adfitional 30 pills, same dose. I did not take frequently, every day but when I did, majority of time it was 1/4 or half of 0.5 mg. These pills were used up in about 1 month. I then started doing research about avitan and got more and more concerned. My anxiety was still there, so I asked doctor for 10 more pills, then using them up, then orderef 15 more…and now im done. I stopped last week, and have decided to pull through. My question is, can you get dependant after this short time, and is there risk fpr seizured with this low dosage? If so, during what timeframe is it the riskiest? I have epilepsy and on meds to prevent seizures. How long does the recovery take, after using this med for the time I discribed? Physical and mental. Should I have tapered down? I need ypur help…

  196. I have seizure and I’m taking topirmax for my seizures since I had a bad head injury almost 3 years ago and i just started taking lorazepam and I am scared to take it when I get a panic attack is it really safe for me to take with my seizure pills

  197. Hello: My Dr. has prescribed an anti depressant drug Bupropion XL. It is 150 mg.
I take this with Luvox -100mg and Lorazepam -1mg at bedtime.

I am sleeping better. Is this dosage ok? Is it ok to drive the car?

  198. Hi. I have been weaning myself off my lorazepam this morning was my last pill. How long till the lorazepam is out of my system so I can get pregnant?

  199. Does Lorazepam bother Diabetics and their sugar levels?
My Doctor has had me on this medication for two years. Had a tragic time with my husband. He has Alzheimer/Dementia and had to be put in the LTC Nursing Home. I took the medication to help me sleep. Now I sleep too much. The Doctor said to stop it at once and if I can’t sleep to take Gravol. Thank you for your help.

  200. I have been going through withdrawal from lorazapam . my dosage was 1mg twice daily. I have reduced it to one and a half tablets for two weeks. I am going to reduce it again to one one mg per day for two weeks after I will reduce it to one half for two weeks and reduce it to the final one half. my question is when during this time will I feel like I ‘turned the corner ?
Withdrawal for the first two weeks has been brutal

  201. Hi, I have been taking Lorazapam for 10- 12 years now, 1 mg twice a day as needed but only took 1 mg before bedtime, just last year increased to 1 and a half mg at bedtime, just last week was taken off the 1 mg and put on 0.5 mg to be taken twice a day, but I only take one tablet at bedtime also was given a script for Zopiclone 7.5mg to be taken at bedtime which I haven’t taken yet and don’t want to, so it’s been 5 days on the 0.5 mg tablet at bedtime, not sleeping well and starting to feel nauseated and having heart palpations like my insides are shaking, not every day though, should I be worried at this stage, I’m 52 years old.

  202. i feel sleeplessness so i took 0.5mg anxit pills once at midnight 1 day ago .if i do my blood urine tests traces can be found or not
how many days traces can be found in human body. please reply as soon as possible, my age is 16yrs.

  203. I was on ativan (lorazepam) for 8yrs prescribed by a doctor. I had to go cold turkey just because my doctor did not want to refill my medicine. I am still with drawing from it. Aug 8 2014 til this date, it is not a fun withdraw. I was up to a 2mg pill. I was taking it for sleep and anixety. It stays in your system for a long time. and as far as sex, with me i did not have any sex desire but when I was made to come off of it, in 4 weeks I got my desire back. I am also seeing a mental health doctor which she has given me some other medicine in replace of it. This is a different doctor than the one who made me go cold turkey without the lorazepam.

  204. Hi , I have been told to take loraxepam for my anxiety till the zoloft kicks in . Im very nervous as im still breastfeeding my son once a day at bedtime. 205. Hi, I am 86 yrs young, and I have been taking Ativan since I lost my Husband in 1993, on and off, I have lost 2 grandsons, as well as a daughter, and always went back to Ativan, just the .o5 I have never increased the dosage, In Nov. 2013 I had the trial for one of my grandsons who was stabbed to death, and I was still taking my Ativan till the beginning of Sep. 2014 when I went to a walk in clinic, and the Dr. wouldn’t give me my Ativan, just 20 pills to wean off them. I have been taking one pill every other night since Sept 4th, so I have had 9 pills instead of 17, now do I keep on as I am till the 20 pills have gone, or should I space them further apart, I haven’t had any bad reactions at all
    Thank you
    Sincerely Eunice

  206. If a person takes 4mg of lorazepam on a Saturday night and takes a urine test Monday afternoon, how likely will they be to pop? The person is 130lbs with no prior usage of lorazepam, has a high metabolize and has been taking 60mg of prescribed vyvanse regularly.

  207. Hi I have been suffering from cluster headaches for six years now. I take sumatriptan nasal spray when I feel a headache coming on which helps a little but dosnt take the pain away completely. My doctor has prescribed me to take half a mg of Lorazepam when I feel a headache coming on, how long should I expect to see some benefit and how long should it work (I get approx 6 headaches daily). Thankyou.

  208. Im trying to fnd out if a sexual side effect is from lorazepam. How long do I have to be off the medication before I can rule it out as the cause? How long does it stay in my system?

  209. Been taking Lorazopam for 12 yrs. was prescribed for sleep…1 mg at night. A year ago I cut in half and decreased to .5 mg. at night …I told Dr. they gave me .5 mg. tablets instead of cutting, now last two months I have cut that in half and am now taking .25 at night…not the best sleep in the world but doable..lots of dreaming and wake up alot..but ok. I have learned the harmful side effects and now i have read where it can spur on dimentia and alzheimers for some patients…I want off completely. Drs. dont seem to make a big deal about it. my side effects are mainly hard to concentrate, and make decisions, but I eventually do…mood swings…occasionally feel feelings of dejavu along with feeling like I am going to pass out….but I never do…it goes away. and its a rare occurance. I know its a nasty drug and it was irresponsible for Drs. to let me stay on it this long. I tried not taking it the other night and took a 5mg. Melatonin..I slept , horrible nightmares…next night tried nothing…..Awful feeling, headaches. nausia…could not sleep….wow,,,and thats only at .25….nasty drug…..I am doing all this on my own….Thinking I will just take the .25 at night only for awhile yet and in bout a month or so, trying to stop the .25 again….I guess I am asking if it is helpful to use the Melatonin? Or is there something else you may recommend to take to help me along that is not addictive when I decide to stop the .25? for sleep and the awful feeling? I will talk to the Dr. about it, and if there is a prescription to take, I will ask…..but I would like your take on my situation and what you may recommend, knowing that I should see a Dr. , just want your input….Should I see my family physician, or make appt. with Neurologist ? for proper help with this? I quit smoking 16 yrs. ago, and that was easier than this….and I have stopped drinking recently……only very occasional and only a beer or two……..there have been times during taking the lorazopam that I have drank too much alcohol…I am 62 and knowing it may too late for serious side effects down the road,,I still want to get off this totally….hard to believe that .25 is still hard to get off of.?????need advice and HELP???

  210. i m taking this drug for 14 yrs, after my angiography having 4 stents in my heart as pressed by me & prescribed by doctor but now it is not helping me and causing me nuissance,i want to stop it but no doctor is taking risk seeing my age of 69 yrs,pl help me exit this without any other sleeping tablet.

  211. Took one 1/2 of a 0.5 mg tablet of lorazepam last night at 10:30. After 20 minutes had several strange sensations. About an hour later those were gone and I felt calm. Slept well. Felt good this morning. Then about 11:00 this morning started feeling jittery, foggy, headache, some waves if unsteadiness. Is this normal? How long will this last. My first time taking this.

    for: Ivana @ Addiction
I am glad Ivana that you included the link you received your information from..
I only wish you had looked at it yourself a bit longer. You would have seen the information you listed were in regards to Forensic Science. i.e.: The Testing of Dead Bodies.
Those specific tests and times are Only in relation to How long lorazepam can be tested for and Detected in a DEAD person..
and clearly once a person is Dead! I doubt their main concern will be passing their mandatory drug test. 🙂

Now Back To Lorazepam (Ativan) in A living person:
A living human being Will PASS a urine or oral fluids (swab) drug test After Waiting:
    7-15 Hrs.
That is HOURS. Not days, and certainly Not weeks!
Not with lorazepam (Ativan). Whether they have taken a risky high dose, or if they have been taking lorazepam for a lengthy period of time, if they have Not Used Yesterday, They Will Be Fine Tomorrow.

Why the on-going listed errors with lorazepam?
Many websites simply look up[ the family of drugs, in this case: Benzodiazepines.
However one Benzo is NOT Always like any other, in fact they differ in regards to Detectability from Hours (lorazepam) up to Weeks! (Valium)

LORAZEPAM Can No Longer Be Detected After: 7 to 15 Hours. period.
Go by the 15 hours since it’s almost impossible to know if you’re closer to the 7 or the 15, so assume you’re one of the 15 hour people and you’ll be fine. Obviously the longer time between using the better – and the best is Not using at all – but when life is life, wait a day in between you will be fine.
I will explain some of Why this is the case with lorazepam::

All urine and ‘swab’ tests used today test for an Active Drug (it’s effects are currently working within your body, the time when the body ‘feels’ the drug’s effect) and a drug’s half-life (when the effects of the drug are no longer ‘felt’ but the body is still ‘working’ on the drug as it has yet to be expelled from the body). And lorazepam’s Half-Life is very Short. It doesn’t stay in your body too long after taking it.
So AFTER 7 to 15 hours lorazepam has worked it’s self OUT of the human body and thus can Not no longer be detected in any current urine/swab test Anywhere b/c it is not there is Nothing in the urine nor saliva To Be detected. Understand?

It’s short half-life, the same reason it can only be testable for a very short time is the same reason for that fast hitting withdrawal.
So tapering down is indeed a must as it could be life threatening. Not to mention very unpleasant and lasts a week give or take in general.
During that week there will be a general feeling of malaise (crummy feeling), sleeping will be difficult to impossible which as the week continues so will the possible onset of ”strange and odd’ thoughts or ideas.
If you are going ‘cold turkey’ be aware that it is dangerous and seek medical assistance at a doctor’s office or an E.R. and be honest with them about your situation. They are not there to condemn you nor call the police. Their concerns are your physical well-being.
But If cold-turkey is your only option, do not do so all alone. Many experience a temporary thought-disorder (mild to severe Depending on length of time/dosage as well as in a general your-experiences-will-vary). So having a person stay or visit, even a daily check up call is better and safer than hiding out alone in a room.

  213. Hi Tracy. If you are planning on becoming pregnant, notify your healthcare provider to best manage your medications. But, it should be out of your system in about a month when you stop taking it completely. But, before you try to conceive is important to discuss this with your doctor and caregivers. It’s not only about stopping the lorazepam, it is about the strong hormonal changes during pregnancy and how it will be handled.

  214. I was prescribed lorazepam for anxiety and have been taking 1mg twice a day for almost over a year. My husband and I plan on getting pregnant and I need to wean off the drug. My question is how long after weaning off would it be safe(for the baby) to conceive? I’d ask the doctor who prescribed it but she’s had me on it for longer than recommended that I don’t trust her opinion. Thank you

  215. Hi Ramond. Lorazepam can be detected in urine for 2 or 3 weeks (and up to 6 weeks if used regularly) but it is not anywhere close to 7 to 15 hours as stated in your comment. Generally if you have a urine screen 24 hours or less after a one-time dose of Lorazepam the metaboilite will not be detectable. However after about 24 hours it will be detectable, and can stay detectable for weeks to come. The following link shows that even one-time lorazepam use is detectable in urine over 144h:

  216. lorazepam is indeed a short acting.
But your statements of 1-2 days is ridiculous.
If a person is healthy generally speaking you can expect this medication to be Long Gone and thus Undectectable within 7 to 15 hours tops.
    Not days.
Please use more than one source when you get information such as this.

So if you take this medication at midnight.. they Will be 100% drug free by Any testing methods the following day as early as 7 am to 3 pm at the long end.
Others like Valium however can and will stay around for weeks. < yes, 2 weeks.

One benzodiazepine is Not like every other. And one short-acting s not 'as' short-acting as another.
Lorazepam is one of THE most short acting and short-in-body medication out there.
It is expelled from the body entirely within seven to 15 hours.
To state it takes days is simply not clinically true.

Even at higher than recommended doses, although if drug testing is the situation one would be smart to go with the 15 hour time line since all bodies are different and one would not know whether they fall into the 7 hours or the 15 hour period.

But days? Absolutely ridiculous. Show me one case in which a person tested positive for lorazepam days later.
Anyone? ANYONE EVER Test Positive for Lorazepam DAYS later? Only if you have Kidney/Liver or other problems. It works and is dispelled from the body very, very quickly.
It is because this drug can stop breathing and kill you! Be careful if you are recreationally taking any of them – long or short acting the results can be 100% exactly the same.
But let's be truthful in our information – They are dangerous. But don't use these types of pages to give false information to scare people into stopping. Give Factual Information.

  217. My husband is addicted to opiates and just recently went on a suboxone program. He’s been on the program before and it was very successful. He only returned to opiates after a dozen serious surgeries, which had him abusing them once again. He started this new program on Friday, was doing really well, until Saturday night when he went into a grand mal seizure, he had two additional surgeries and three emergency room visits within a fourteen hour period.

I contacted the suboxone doctor who asked if he was also abusing benzos, and I told them I honestly did not know.

Apparently, according to pharmacy records he had 60 1mg lorazepams prescribed in mid May, then he stole 50 of mine in June and again this month. I’m prescribed 1 mg three times a day, but have never taken more than one and only then if absolutely needed or anxiety.

So basically he had access to about 160 pills in 8 weeks and not sure how he was taking them but certain not any where near the appropriate way.

The neurologist prescribed him Librium 50 mgs per day for four days and say that should keep him from seizing and now I’m TERRIFIED.

What’s going to happen when the Librium is done day after tomorrow? Is he going to pick back up with the seizures? He last took the Lorazepam about six days ago, and I know he took twelve in one day……this is a nightmare.

He’s currently experiencing memory issues big time. He has no cravings for either the opiates due to the suboxone, nor the Lorazepam, which the cravings are not addressed by the suboxone.

It’s very apparent, especially once he’s been on the Librium the last three days, that his brain IS NOT functioning very well. He’s lucid, but but someone lethargic and slightly confused.

His other physical health is very poor, has had countless surgeries over the last three years.

I’m terrified…the seizures were literally horrifying. Do you have any idea how long the seizure threat will be there?

    Please, please, anyone?

  218. I’ve been on .5 of adavan for a week and now upped it to 1mg and this is my third day and I take about 2 or 3 and day but I feel funny in my head all the time now and it won’t go away I feel like I’ve takin pain pills or that I’m drunk constant lying what do I do and is that normal

  219. Hi ivana. Thank you for replying. Before stopping or as soon as I stopped lorzapam (can’t remember) onedof the derms said my te has stopped but I need to stop whats stressing and meds. Which I did. But can’t really stop whats stressing me cause its here only thing I can do is do my best on following up on whats good for my health and how to treat it and im working on that. I have lost my huge appetite but I eat fairly and healthy stuff mostly and usual. I did start minoxidil but not always two times a day as I am scared. And te or normal shedding from it started and it freaked me out. So I went to other derm and he told me to stop now to check for other underlining. Im worried not use it and that might cost me or to use it and that might cost me to be honest I did feel itching a few times through the year in certian places and a couple or 3times in that year a painfil burning in sculp in the frontm so im so scared that lorzapam might have caused me a scarring hair loss in some places. Is your advice just to keep a healthy life style and not use minoxidil. Its only been 3months im off it. Have you really seen that people who have taken it had some regrowth or total regrowth in 6months to a year? I know you have given me hope somehow. Its still scarry to know itching and burning may be a scarring hair

  220. Hi Cynthia,

It really depends on the person but typically it’s between three to four weeks you will start to form dependancy. But three weeks is ok then your doctor should start to taper you off slowly. I personally hated being addicted to those, I took them for 2 months and the withdrawal symptoms were just horrible, it took a lot of will power to get over those. I’m terrified of it! Good luck!

  221. HELLO. If a person is taking 1/2 of 1mg per day of ativan…How long would it take before tolerance builds up and addiction would become problem?

  222. Hi AJ,
Yes, the mood swings you are having will eventually go away once your body adjusts itself to not having the medicine anymore. The same thing happened to me and now I feel fine. I’ve been off of it for 4 months now after going through horrible withdrawal symptoms. I told my doctor I felt like a drug addict, thank God I feel fine now. Hang in there!

  223. Hi tanya. The hair loss that people experience as a result of taking certain drugs, including lorazepam, is telogen effluvium (TE). To ease your mind, this form of hair loss is not permanent. The problem is, it may take from six months to over a year for your hair to start to come back.
The process of hair growth can be speeded up through a good diet. And that doesn’t mean loading up on vitamin pills. It means eating nutritious foods and avoiding junk foods.

  224. Was recently on ativan 1-2 me a day for over year went through a horrible withdrawal that put me in hospital. I had all of the normal withdrawal symptoms but mostly being very agitated and anxious and angry . I have been off for two months and my moods are up and down alot. I just wanna know is this permanent or will my brain chemistry level out ? Thanks

  225. Please help. I had horrible hair loss very extreme over the year I was taking lorzapam. I have quit lorzapam around 2months if not more. Will my hair grow back? Does using minoxidil help? I took many hair vitamins through the year please help

  226. My daughter takes lorazepam as emergency med for her epilepsy seizures. My question is: How long does it’s effect last?

  227. For the last 10 years I’ve been taking Ativan 1 mg at night before going to bed. It lasts 9 hours, sometimes 7 hours. Frankly i would like to quit… but I can not! Sometimes I try to sleep without medicine but I can not. I feel all tenses because of that. Please help me! I am 55 years old. I only have chronic acidity. When i take the max dose (for me), which means Ativan 2mg it works better, but I’ve had it reduced by 1mg. Now I want to reduce it to 0.50 mg but I can not. I am searching some natural Ayurvedic medicine.

  228. Hello Hazel. Coming off Rhovane is a challenge. Experts usually recommend that withdrawal be carried out over a period of time, by lowering doses gradually in order to avoid severe withdrawal symptoms. The side effects when quitting Rhovane abruptly include seizures and psychosis. You should consult your doctor to come up with a tapering schedule and perhaps prescribe some other medications to regulate your physical state during that period of time.

  229. I have been on ativan 1mg. for about three years what is the easiest way to get off it without severe withdrawel symstoms as I was on demeral for eight months and even cutting back like the doctor suggested I had severe withdrawal symptoms for two months after. I would also like to know how to get of rhovane for sleeping?

  231. Im on 1mg of Ativan 3 times a day how long does it take if you cut one in half for it to not cause me a problem?

  232. I believe that I was been given lorazepam dose without my knowledge for some period of time and without medical supervision I was stopped giving this drug and I have faced over dose side effects I want to detect and be sure that this is given to me is there the possibility that this can be detected through my broken hair of that time when it was been consumed

  235. Hello,

I have been taking Lorazepam 0.5 mg three times a day since 1/29/14 (for two months now), I reduced the dose to 0.5 mg twice a day for three days and 0.5mg for two days. My last dose of 0.5mg was 14 hours ago. I feel a bit anxious, nauseous and increased heart rate. My question is, what should I expect from here on? Should I try taking another dose or just stay away from it at this point? How long will it stay in my body?

    Please help with any info.

I am having headaches and tremors and tight feeling head.
How long will these withdrawal symptoms last and when should I quit it completely? Once I do quit how long before it will be completely out of my system?

  243. FACT:
you can double-check this fact on ANY (other) website page. This is The Actual Facts regarding Ativan, it has a Short Half-Life, meaning it does Not stay in your system long, and if it’s not IN your body it can Not be detected in the urine, correct? It’s usually all out within 16 hours, but go with 24 hrs just to be 100% Sure.

  244. I have been prescribed lorazepam 1mg to treat panic attacks and to help sleep it has seemed to work but the dizziness isn’t going away I’ve only taken 2 pills when I felt like I needed it as told by my doctor will the dizziness go away anytime soon or should I call my doctor

  245. You Will Have a CLEAN URINE Between 9 – 24 hours.
    24 hrs.Tops!!

Whoever wrote this used this one sentence for their answer: “Benzodiazepines – 2-3 weeks” – However Not All Benzodiazepines work the same way! In Fact, some are OUT of your system is less than One Day… and Ativan (lorazepam) is one those benzos. It is OUT of your body systems and therefore Undetectable in 9-24 hours, although on a personal note even with a High and consistent dosage of Ativan, it is out of the urine and I test clean within 16 hours of dosing, consistently clean via urine test and the new used in Methadone-Clinic ‘mouth swab test’. Clean Clean Clean so in 24 hours you will have NO Problems. period.

Why is this so different from the ‘above study’? Because they gave you the statistics for The Benzodiazepine Group as a whole, NOT For Ativan specifically.

How can there be such a Big-Difference between drugs on the same Type? Because of their difference in Half-Life. It’s all about the half-life… and knowing which Benzos have a Long/Longer Half-Life and which have a Short/Shorter Half-Life.
Every medication, legal or non-legal, all have Two Lives so to speak. First comes the period of time in which the medication is absorbed and it’s effects are felt until they taper off and finish. After the drug ‘loses’ it’s desired effectiveness until it is cleared from the body. This ‘Second Life’, which is termed it’s Half-Life… is what you need to know when figuring out when the drug has Cleared it’s self from the body – When you will Test Clean.

Now the Half-Life of Benzodiazepines vary from less than 12 hours, 12 to 24 hrs, and well over 24 hours (2-3 weeks).
The Longer the Half-Life, the longer it stays IN your body, and the Longer it’s in there the Longer it will show up in drug screening tests. Makes sense, right?
So Ativan (lorazepam) is on the LOWER END. It’s Half-Life is between 9 to 24 hours. They always give you a ‘range’ since not all bodies work exactly the same, but if you aren’t suffering from Liver problems I’d go with the highest number of hours or days just to be sure.
Although on a personal note… I have taken high doses of Ativan on a regular basis and whenever I have taken a urine tests (or those new Mouth Swab-Tests) I have Always Been Clean 16 hours after taking it. And other people ‘might’ be fine at 9 hours, but since it says 9 to 24 hours, to be certain go with the highest number of 24 hours. To be safe.
And the reason it’s out of your body That Quickly is because of Ativan’s Short Half-Life.Because it has a Short Half-Life.

The Benzodiazepines with The Higher Half-Lives are Klonopin with an 18 to 50 hour Half-Life (which means after 50 hours just to be sure, you will test Clean, and some will test clean at just 18 hours.) and Valium is one of the Longest Acting Half-Lives, meaning after the ‘feeling of it’ wears off it remains in the body for a Longer period of time: 20 to 100 hours.

So please remember: Not all Benzos have the same half-life, so they don’t require the same amount of time in between to Test Clean.
With Ativan, you only need 24 hours after taking it to give a Clean Urinalysis. You might be like me and only need 16, but if you can, always go with the Top Number in this case 24 hours JUST to Be Sure you test clean.

and as a p.s.: If you’re also on Methadone (or using some other narcotic at the same time)
Be Careful, Please. Makes No Difference which Benzo or what it’s half-life is. Remember it’s Half-Life only refers to when the ‘effects’ are over. The First Part, the way the body is affected is the same no matter Which Benzo you take.
But please know that Benzos and Methadone Do NOT Mix.
Benzos alone is hard enough, figuring out how much is just right and how much is Too Much. Narcotics too. And both drugs taken alone do kill us off one by one. But put them BOTH Together? Benzos and Narcotics? especially Methadone…
Adding Benzos to a Methadone Dose kills off More People than any Other Drugs – combined or alone.. I just wanted to get that out there. No judgement here guys. Just the facts.

  246. Hi I don’t take Ativan very often, although I did take 0.5 mg of Ativan this morning around 11am. My question is how many hours do I have to wait to smoke marijuana? Because I have read that if you take Ativan and smoke marijuana together it can cause respiratory depression. My prescription says to take 1 pill every 8 hrs. as needed. A 24 count bottle has lasted me about 3 or 4 months so ya I don’t take it all that often. Thank you for your time.

    Best Regards

  247. hi they give my daughter lorazepam and shes acting wierd now ..can you tell me how long this medicine wil stay in ger system and is she gonna go back to normal…

  248. they gave lorazepzepam to my daughter when she have her seizure the last those was thursday 2 days ago and now shes acting mental or slow i can not explain this is not her…

  249. Please help.. 26 year old male with Bicuspid arotic valve and mild arotic regurgitation . I was prescribed 1 m of lorazapam a night to help me sleep.. I don’t know wether I am having anxiety or if its my heart trying to tell me something. If I take have been taking 2 asprin a day plus a 1 mg. lorazapam in the night for 7 days then stop cold turkey could it make the anxiety worse or is this two short of time to make a difference?

  250. A doctor put me on 1mg Lorazapam when I hurt my back 12 years ago and no doctor ever took me off or mentioned taking me off. I had to go on night o2 while I was on it because it suppressed my breathing. It wasn’t until 4 years or so before anyone really mentioned that part. Well, I decided to stop it. It was hell, my heart felt like it was jumping out of my chest for weeks and I couldn’t sleep at all. Now it has been 4 months and I keep having over reaction heart pounding anxiety attacks that I have never had before. Has this drug ruined my brain? I feel my body is way over reacting and the heart pounding hurts. My new doctor just thinks I need some other kind of drug, but no way. I think it has to do with the long term use of Lorazapam. The first doctor didn’t give it to me for an anxiety disorder, but to help me sleep because of pain. I have dealt with plenty of stress in my life, but never had this kind of feeling. Is there a test or something for brain function

  251. I have been taking lorazepam for several years for sleeping and anxiety. I take 1/2 mg nightly and sometimes I take two (1mg). I have noticed quite a bit of dizziness the next day lately and I want to stop taking the drug. Don’t know how to do this.? Would you please advise.

  252. Problem with any benzodiazepine is that one eventually after few weeks if they are using it for sleep develop tolerance for sedative properties. Good news is those who use if for anxiety, stress, aggression, lorazepam is a good choice as with benzo’s, I believe you do not develop tolerance as fast or ever with the anxiolytic properties.
If you have been on any short acting benzo, even a long one like diazepam, or clonazepam, tapering for some is best alternative. However, if one is taking for example a very low dosage of long acting(10mg diazepam) which I don’t know why one would for any condition since there are better muscle relaxants and anti-panic medications other than diazepam. Theoretically, if one were to come off after prolongued usage(1yr+) 10mg diazepam, it might be very easy for some to get off cold turkey. Again, depends on individual. Don’t go by everything you read from the internet( to yourself and if you happen to see a doctor who is competent in tapering off benzo’s, listen always to him/her.

  253. Hello,

I was prescribed this medication because I showed up in the emergency room with an apparent high blood pressure attack, just out of now where. The high when the paramedics came was 170/105…by the time I hit the hospital I was 144/91, and it continued to drop. They basically diagnosed me after my blood/urine test with anxiety/stress and to follow up with my primary care physician…I know this may be ridiculous to some buy I took 1mg in the am, and evening for 2 days…then immediately went off it, because I found out what the medication did. I have felt like hell since…and its been 5 days since I took the last pill. I dont drink, smoke, or have ever done any type of drugs except over the counter to treat my monthly migraines….Could it be possible for this drug to sill be in my system? I have felt a little better everyday, but still feel disoriented, dizzy, out of body…Thank you.

  254. My father in law is 97 years old and is suffering from Dementia. Symptoms are Extreme Anxiety, Insomnia, obcessive behavior. He has been prescribed .05 m twice a day. We have tried for many months to hope that the Airecept for the Dementia would work. Thank you, Billie Stevens

  255. Hello i am 17 and i have terrible anxiety when flying and travelling and am prescribed 1mg Lorazepam for plane journeys. I will be flying soon and i am wondering how long lorazepams effects are. I have taken it about 10
times but i can never remember how tired i am. I will be having a busy day and night on that day and so i am concerned about how drowzy i will be. Any comments/ advice would be much appriciated.
    Thanks, Amelia x

  256. Hi Karen. I’d suggest that you seek an appointment with your prescribing doctor for a step down/tapering calendar catered to your individual needs. Every person is different, and you’ll need a program to follow to help you get off lorazepam, as well as medical supervision during the period of acute withdrawal.

  257. I was having panic attacks and difficulty dealing with my mother’s death so my PCP prescribed .5 mgs Lorazepam 3 times per day. After two years of taking it, it began causing me physical problems so I went to my PCP about weaning off. The very same PCP who prescribed it knew NOTHING about weaning off of it. I spoke with several other drs in my area including a neurologist who were no more help than my PCP was. This made me very angry and I had to do my own research. I tried to get help from various detox centers but they ALL turned me down because the medication was dr. prescribed and I was not abusing it nor was I a drug addict ! I’m trying to wean off the Lorazepam without taking any other type of medication in it’s place….is this unrealistic? Anyway, each time I stepped down the dosage, I had SEVERE withdrawal symtpsom (dreams of dying, feeling like I’m dying, dizziness, balance problems, knees buckling, ears ringing, clogged feeling in my head almost like a head cold, SEVERE headaches and more)……perhaps I’m trying too fast to get off of it. It has been 4 1/2 months and I have gone from taking 1.5 mgs daily to .25 mgs. Once I got to .25 mgs, I tried to stop it altogether and after six days, the withdrawal symptoms were so severe that I had to take a dose just to calm myself. How do I step down from here and at what point, can I stop it altogether without having these SEVERE withdrawals? Sorry this poist is so lengthy. I just wanted to get all the facts out there.

  258. Hi i take 1mg of lorazepam for flying.
I will be taking it at about 6am and then i am invited to my friends big birthday night out in town which would be about 9pm-3am. My question is will i still feel the effects of the lorazepam in the evening or will i likely be too tired to go out that night?
Ps. I won’t be drinking that night and i don’t know if this is important but i am 17. I have taken lorazepam maybe about 10 times so far, for flying and it’s great but i do usually feel a little out of it and tires.

  259. I am 47 yrs old and was prescribed .5 Lorazapam 2 times a day and at bed time as needed for anxiety, so I’ve been taking 3 pills a day for about 5 months. I’ve been off of it for three days after 1 and 1/2 weeks of taking smaller doses until i stppoed taking it, and the symptoms are awful. Ive had bad headaches and had an episode of vertigo, that my PCP actually thinks may have been a mini-stroke instead. I’ve had a CAT scan and they can’t find anything wrong with my brain. I am also weak and have dizzy spells. As I’m talking to people, I just have to put my head down and rest. Have I done permanent damage to by brain? Someone please tell me that these symptoms will eventually go away.

  260. so i was taking larazpam 3 times a day for like a week and one like every 5 nights. then i took a break from it for a week and had one last week, and my visons been wierd for like 4 days now .. and it only gets like that when i take that pill .. so how longs till my vison is back to normal….

  261. I have an RX for Lorazepam but I only take it when the anxiety gets too bad. I took a .5 mg. tablet about 3 days ago and just took another one. Is the tablet I took 3 days ago still in my system and will that one have some effect on the tablet I took today? Also, how many days do you need to space a .5 mg. dose in order to avoid dependence and addiction. Does a .5 mg dose stay in the system more than 3 days if you take one every 3 or 4 days?

  262. I have on lorazepam 1mg after surgery for quite a while, stopped taking it 1 week today ago yesterday. Had not been able to sleep for 3 nights so I broke down and took my last pill last night.I really do not want to be on this, such my withdrawal be about over.

  263. I was prescribed 2mg xanax per day for sleep. Took the 25 pills in 2-3 week period. I hadn’t known tapering was the proper way to stop. Will I have bad withdrawals and should I expect them for a while? Are there natural remedies or things like working out that help alleviate potential withdrawals. My doctor said 2mg/day for the couple weeks might have minor withdrawal side effects, but didn’t say for how long. Any personal advice?

  264. One can NOT just Stop Cold-Turkey ANY Benzos…

Ativan/Lorazepam included. Because it is indeed a short-acting one, withdrawals will start rather quickly as well.

And unlike say opiates where quitting cold turkey will make you WISH you were dead (i.e. heroin) – You can actual die from doing so with this class of drug.

The Longer and higher the dosage will affect the greater the degree of withdrawal symptoms.

if for whatever reason you No Longer have access to this medication and have been taking it regularly for a period of time – you should go to the emergency room and state the situation as honestly as possible.

Symptoms will likely be the following: Great Anxiety, Osdd/bizare thoughts, inability to sleep for one to Several Weeks, changes in blood pressure and CNS. This is not something you want to just MAN-UP and Quit.
Obtain Medical Assistance… If you need to scam your way into a psych facility and then once there tell them along with the anxiety and crazy thoughts you have decided to stop taking the Ativan you’ve been on or prescribed for the last so many years/months and once you have stopped describe your symptoms to the doctor you see. They will hopefully taper you down –

NOW if You Have Access Top Lorazepam…. But desire to stop.. Then taper down .5 (half) mg every week or so – But this is NOT my expertise.
But Tapering Down is a MUST!
The Crazy Odd Thoughts themselves will be very very intense.
The serious rebound-effects when you simply stop can actually Kill You.

    Seek Medical Attention asap!

  265. this goes against My EVERY Experience with Lorazepam.
This is Certainly true with other benzos i.e.: Valium

But Lorazepam, Name Brand being Ativan even at High Doses Leave your body between 7-14 hrs (and that’s being conservative)
Whomever wrote this either confused other Benzos or thought ALL Benzos worked and acted the same. This is not true at all. Some are Long acting and others short acting.
This particular one is SHORT ACTING and LEAVES The Body/Urine very very quickly.

Of course if a persona has a diseased Liver or other organs than what is ‘normal’ for most will not be the case – but if the body is functioning properly… even a high dose will be unable to be seen in the urine between 7-14 hours. Most say 7-12 hours but to be certain after 14 hrs it is out of your body and unable to be seen in a drug screen.

  266. Hi Joan. Unfortunately, it’s not in the best interest of a doctor to warn you about drug dependency. I’d suggest that you look into natural and lifestyle changes to learn to cope with anxiety. Have you spoken with a clinical psychologist about non-medication treatment options?

  267. i have been on 0.5 mg for many years to counteract the insombia inderal has caused. want off both and although i am taking half of the 160 of the inderal i still need the 0.5 of the ativan plus now i feel anxious and need 0.5 of the ativan during the day. will i be hooked forever. i was never told this could happen.

  268. I have been on for about 10 years 11/2 pills two hours before I go to bed. That is all I have ever taken. 1mg pills I take. Will it cause me any harm. Or should I get off it.

  269. Hi, I have never tried Lorazepam before and I am supposed to go to a party tonight but I have a lot of anxiety about it. I was prescribed 1mg, but I was thinking about only taking .5 to .25 before the party where I will be drinking. Will I be ok if I do this?

  270. Hello. I was taking Ativan at a total of 3mg per day for about 10 days. I developed urge incontinence and after seeing my doctor, stopped taking the drug cold turkey. I have no problems from that but now, 1 day after stopping, I still have a stronger than usual urinary urge; maybe not quite as bad as yesterday but it’s still present. Does the fact that it stays in your system mean it will still affect me in this way for a while, or should the problem have stopped right after my no longer taking it? My doctor confirmed no UTI or prostate issues. I am a 57 y/old male.

  271. ive taken .5 mgs of ativan 4 about ten days 1 pill a day i stopped on sunday i weigh 130 pounds will it b out of my urine by wed?

  272. Hi Jean. It’s possible that you need to consult with a doctor who can provide a second opinion or a third opinion on your case. Keep in mind that zolpidem is meant for short term use, as well….not more than 6 weeks. Zolpidem can also be habit forming. Keep asking questions and seek a referral from friends or family. You’ll get there!

  273. help. My doctor put me on lorazapam 12 years ago. Subsequently, the next doctor just continued prescribing it to me. I never abused it and it was only 1mg. Originally it was given to me because I hurt my back. They continued to give me all kinds of medications, adding and adding until I couldn’t think, breath and my bowels almost shut down. That was 2008. Slowly they took me down on pain meds, but never stopped Lorazapam. I had no idea what it was doing to me. I thought my doctors knew best. Never did anyone mention that it wasn’t long term and that it was ruining my brain. As pain meds decreased, I started thinking again and checked out Lorazapam on the net. Oh, my gosh. This stuff is horrible. I started decreasing it to half and spent three weeks of intense heart racing. A month ago, I stopped the .5 mg. My doctor gave me Zolpidem to help sleep. It works well, but now I am told that it’s making the withdrawal of Lorazapam last longer. I am so worn out. It’s a month and I feel worse than ever. I so want off this stuff. I have no doctor who seems to care about what I am going through. I do I get BACK TO NORMAL WITHOUT CRACKING UP? or HAVING A STROKE?

  274. my 1 year old had a feberal seizure. she was given 2 doses of ativan to stop the seizure. 3 days later she is still groggy, wobbly on her feet etc.. how long will this last? is this normal? im concernex because she is 3 weeks since she began to walk and she is def acting different. pleaze help. nervous dad

  275. Hello Cree. Speak with your prescribing doctor immediately and report these symptoms. It sounds as if you need professional medical advice. Best of luck to you, Cree.

  276. Hi im cree i take ativan (Lorazepam) how can i cut down when it makes me so ill? also it no longer stops my anxiety.sometimes i think i will never get off it i havent taken it 4 2 days now im very ill but what other way is there pls help me thanks.

  277. Hello Alina. Call the Poison Control Center immediately at 1-800-222-1222 or take your mother to the emergency room.

  278. Hi Sam. Physical dependence is different than drug addiction. While you may be chemically reliant on Ativan, you can taper down and get off with the advice of your prescribing doctor or pharmacist. Good luck and all the best!

  279. I am a female with an anxious personality. I have taken valium off and on for difficult situations all of my life, but only for short periods of time, and for dentist or other stressful situations here and there. I am 71 now and have taken .5 Ativan practically every night for sleep for the last two and a half years. I took 1 mg. for two and a half years before that. Total 5 years now. Can one become addicted to that small of a dose? How do I taper off and how long does it take? I have been having vertigo episodes with nausea and throwing up about once a month for three months now, and don’t know if it is connected to Ativan use or not? Want to get off of it completely to see.

  280. I have been off lorazepam for almost 3 months now. I was taking .5 mg twice a day for 3 months, then .5 mg once a day for about a month. After stopping I had hypoglycemic symptoms, when I would walk I felt like the ground wasn’t stable. I now feel exhausted, some days my muscles are weak and vibrate. I also feel shakey and in a fog a lot. I’ve been eating every couple of hours trying to help with the shakiness. I also have a weird taste in my mouth, and my hair has been falling out. I know it’s a lot of random stuff. I’m so confused, I don’t know whether this is from stopping lorazepam or if it’s something else. Please help!

  281. I was on 1 mg of lorazepam for 2 month’s then cut it to .5 mg for a month and then .25 mg for two weeks. I ve been off it for 20 days. How long before i am completely off of it. Thanks. Rick

  284. I have been taking ativan for PTSD associated nightmares for 12 years. The vast majority of tis time Img at bedtime only. I recently took urine test 14 hous after ingesing 1mg ofativan and it cme back negative with a test cutof of 2000ng/ml

I wastold that I could not get a refil because I was not taking the medication as precribed. The Doctor was aare that I trie to take it only as needed and was told I took it the night before.

SO nowI stopped taking it as I figured it was not in my system and so I would not have to worry. 4 dys later Im in the ER with tremors, palpitations, high heat rate, overheating in bed, inabilit to sleep, ad a BP of 158/100 he immediatedty told me o begin takin the ativan I had and i took one which releived the symptoms ovr a short period of time. However I am now dealing with a VA that tinks I am not taking them as prescribled and will soon run out again.

Is that negative test really reliable? Im at a loss to defend myself and will face another withdrawal in a week. (aside: I still have 20 1mg tabs even though my Rx was only through March 9th becasue, as I said I dont usually take them except before bed

  285. Hello Jennifer. You can consult with a local pharmacist or seek a second opinion with a prescribing physician on your questions about lorazepam. The woman who you are with is lucky to have someone who cares so much about her health!

  286. Hi everyone,

I have a very serious question here and looking for advise from someone in the medical field who has dealt with lorazepam a lot. I do 24 hour care for a 92 year old lady who has MS and is bed ridden. She has been having issues with memory which bothers her and it started when her other med was upped to a whole pill. The Dr. had us stop that high dose of the carbamazepine for her MS pain and she seems a lot better but… she is having us take her off the lorazepam cold turkey in a week and I’m very concerned. I’ve taken this med before in my life. Her dose now is very low and far as I know she’s been on it for a year. She used to take 1/2 of a .5mg twice a day. Now she’s down to 1/4 of a .5mg at night. I know the dose is low and my coworker doesn’t think it will effect her to go cold turkey but I feel differently and don’t want to over step my place there by saying anything to the dr. or family or even her because she is easily influenced by even an opinion to the point she will think she feels things that aren’t there. The dose is low but it seems to help her sleep which has been a problem for her many nights as it is. Is she at risk of seizure or withdrawal? I love this woman with all my heart and I’m very worried about this. I think the Dr. is taking her off it thinking it’s the cause of her memory issue but beings I’m with her so much I don’t agree. Looking for input or advice from a medical professional please or someone who has had a similar situation. Meds seem to effect her more than a younger person hence her dosages of what she takes. Thank you for reading this.

  287. I have been taking lorazepam .5mg for two months for alcohol withdrawal and panic attacks and anxiety. At first I only took one dose every few days but my panic attacks continues and became more frequent. Now I am up to 2 doses a day for the past month and now for three weeks I have been feeling dizzy all the time. My question is: If you take lorazepam for two months or more, can it start to make you feel dizzy and hung over even if there were no side effects at first? I am hoping that I am not over medicated.

  288. Hello BK. Call the drug testing lab to be sure, but most testing centers will present a NEGATIVE for abuse drug screen to employers if you are within expected norms of a prescription. Just present the prescription to the Medical Review Officer (MRO) on staff and you should be OK.

  289. Hello. I occasionally take Ativan 1mg to help with sleep. By occasionally I mean one pill per week or less. I just found out that I have to take a drug test for my new job and I’m wondering just how long I need to wait before I can be safe. I do have a prescription for it, but I’m nervous that because it’s a job with a school district that there may be some sort of zero tolerance policy. Any help is appreciated!
    Thank you!!

  290. Hello Marcia. In a recent study, point of care assays yielded false negative results for patients prescribed benzodiazepines nearly 20% of the time. Further testing of specimens using more accurate methods such as LC-MS/MS is necessary to provide definitive data that can assist in clinical decision making.

In other words, go back and ask which testing methods they lab used. Then, ask for a re-test using a LC-MS/MS drug screen. Here’s the study that you can reference:

  291. I haven’t been able to pass drug test’s, oral, or urine for Lorazapam, there is no evidence of it in my system, I normally take it 3x a day, and it does not show up, and my doctor has taken me off of it. I can’t understand why this is happening. I took the last urine test,on dec 15, two wks later, drug test came back negative. I also was told that there was alcohol in my system, haven’t had a drink of any kind for nearly 3 yrs!. What is happening, no one believes me, in the doctor’s office, including the doc, that I am taking my med’s. He just took me off cold turkey!. Please give me some answers. It’s like someone in that office got the drug samples mixed up, or something. Help!, this is following me from doctor, to doctor!.

  292. Hi Josh,

It’s possible that you’re experiencing underlying depression, which can be related to anxiety. I’d suggest that you seek help from a psychologist or psychiatrist in traditional talk therapy to identify what is going on beneath the surface. You are not alone!

  293. Hey went to the hospital during an anxiety attack and the gave me 1mg of lorazepam. Then I took another the next day without feeling of panic attack. I felt fine for about 5 days then had another anxiety attack. So I took 1 to get rid of the anxiety and one the next day. Since then I have been in a depressed mood its been about 5 days or so now. Could the lorazepam still be in my system and causing these feelings? If so when it leaves my system will I start feeling better or should I see a doctor?

  294. MANY Benzos DO take a week give or take before a urine test will come out ‘clean’.

    But with Ativan?
It is OUT of your body ANY out of your Urine in 7 to 12 hours
    – soeven if you took 10-12mg of Ativan the afternoon before.. The NExt Afternoon you will NOT piss dirty!
After between 7-12 hours (I’d go with the 12 hours to be sure) You WILL be Clean.

Bezo’s will act differently on the body – incluyding the length they stay IN the Body and in your Urine.
and Ativan is the Fastest out-of-your-body Benzo there is!
if you MUST use one and are testing – This is tghe one – But take More than the dose says… 4mg and up depending on YOUR body cn give you severe amnesia for DAYS afterwards.. cause you to ‘freeze-frame’ while crossing the street (not a very low-profile drug when taken in excess.)

But it WILL be OUT of your Urine in 12 hours – make it 24 hours and you are 100% good to go UNLESS of Course you have Liver problems, and say Hep C – then all bets are off since your body isn’t working as healthy body’s are. But w/o any serious medical issue 24 hours and Ativan is 100% Gone!

  295. I have been on lorazapam for over 9 years, taken on a daily basis, I am supposed to take three times a day, but only take 1 mg at night for sleep, and half a pill in the day when I feel a panic attack coming on, I have been classified as my panic attacks being cause by a chemical imbalance, my new doctor is not concerned with treating panic attacks and told me to just stop the med just like that, untill I get a reevaluation, I have been told by others it is not safe to just stop this med. Another doctor told me to stay on the med, becasue I have chemical imbalance. What is the best thing to do.

  296. Hi Kath. Yours seems a very complex issue. Addiction is unlikely to occur in your father’s case, as psychological cravings may not be present. It is possible that he become physically dependent on the drug at some time, but if he is in hospice receiving palliative care, Ativan may just well be a medication prescribed for valid reason. Speak with his prescribing doctor to voice and air out your concerns.

  297. My mother wants my father to take Ativan (90-years-old; many health problems including dementia) for anxiety. It has been given by hospice. I do not believe that it helps him. There are times that he gets belligerent and unreasonable and I think that is why she wants him on it, but it does not necessarily reduce these behaviors. To my knowledge she is giving him one tablet at 6 PM. She is not caring for him because of a surgery she had that she is still recovering from. The issue of medication has created a rift between us; truly if anyone needs something for anxiety, it is her! I am concerned about its addictive effects and see little benefit to its use at this point. What are the long term ramifications for using Ativan in his case. I noted that most places indicate that it is generally for short term use; 2-4 weeks. She plans to give it daily, indefinitely. Will his body crave more as time goes on? I see no reason to give this and it angers me to the point I told her that I will have no problem giving her meds to try to knock her out if she is in his situation since she thinks it is so good for him. I think she just wants to have some control. Am I wrong to feel this way?

  298. Hi I have been taking lorazepam since Sept 14th 2012. I’m an artist and I had an art show back in the beginning of Sept. and was rushing to get a picture done for it. Basically stayed up 3 nights straight and drank 6 Red Bull energy drinks and coffee within that time frame(and I never drink Red Bull). A few days after the art show I started feeling down and anxiety set in. I really thing it was because of the abuse to my body. So my doctor prescribed lorazepam. So now I am still on it (.5mg a day but a couple of weeks ago I was taking 1mg a day) I have severe nausea every morning and through the day(really hard to eat anything but I make myself anyway). I have lost almost 25 lbs since taking the lorazepam. I also wake up every morning with anxiety. I try to hold off as much as I can in taking the .5 lorazepam.
I really feel that the nausea has to do with trying to quit the lorazepam. And maybe even the anxiety that I still feel is attributed to the drug too. I don’t take any other drugs and am not prone to anxiety(although I did have postpartum depression after each of my 3 children, but it passed with no drug use). This morning I took .4mg of lorazepam at 8:45am. And right now at 5:11pm I am having anxiety. I really don’t want to take anymore today (and usually I feel good in the evenings). So I was wondering how do I get off this drug and how long will it take? Should I continue to take .5 a day and if so, for how long? When can I switch to .25? Am I feeling anxiety now because I only took .4 mg this morning?
    Thanks, Erin

  299. Hi Kell. Rest easy. As long as you are taking lorazepam as prescribed, you have nothing to worry about. With a prescription for lorazepam, simply present the Rx or a copy of your medical notes to the Medical Review Officer at the drug testing laboratory and any use that is within your prescribed amount will be considered NEGATIVE for abuse.

  300. Hi there, glad I found this site. I wanted to ask, I have been taking Lorazepam for over a year now. I am taking it for anxiety, I dont take it everyday just when I feel overwelmed. im suppose to take 1mg 3 times a day but I dont. I usually take 2mg a day. The last time I took one was last night at 10pm. So today I get offered a job at my husbands work… temp job for 3 months. But guess what, I have to take a drug test.
My husband is a big wig at this company, I dont want to embarrass him in any way. Especially if this comes up in my drug test.
Any thoughts? I think I have to go in at the end of the week to test. Thanks for being here for people to go to you…

  301. Hi Debbie. Along with its needed effects, lorazepam may cause some unwanted effects. If side effects such as weakness and nausea occur they may need medical attention. Call your doctor if these symptoms persist or do not go away:

  302. Hi my name is Debbie I took lorazepam last night at 10:30 pm, it’s now 2:45 pm the next day and I feel awful, I feel nauseated , weak and lathargic, is this a common side effect? If so how long will I feel this way.

  303. Hi Monique. As long as the Ambien is prescribed and taken as prescribed, your boyfriend should be OK. Ambien works as an anti-benzodiazepine hypnotic and should clear the system and not interfere with the action of lorazepam if taken a day apart.

  304. My boyfriend was prescribed Lorazepam and has quit taking it for two whole day now and can’t sleep. I was wondering is it safe to take an Ambien at night to help him sleep? Since he hasnt taken the Lorazepam, he should be fine right? The physcatrist said if he takes maybe half of an Ambien he should be alright…I just want to make sure, thanks

  305. Hi Lisa. Thanks for your question. I would personally err on the side of caution, and wait as long as possible before starting bupropion after lorazepam. Benzodiazepines like lorazepam are notorious for remaining in the system due to their long half lives.

However, I think that this question will be best answered by the prescribing doctor or a pharmacist. I would definitely ask for medical advice before dosing with an antidepressant on top of a CNS depressant. They both work by increasing or decreasing certain types of activity in the brain and the overlap can cause serious adverse side effects.

  306. Hi iv been taking .5mg for a couple months now was taking more befor that but weened myself down to .5 once a day….just got perscribed Bupropion 75Mg twice a day, it says not to take if your just getting off any Benz (lorazepam) or have just recently stopped taking, its been 3 days now & have not taken anything but im scared im gonna have another panick attack, is the lorazepam out of my system enough to start this new perscription? Or should i try waiting a few more days?

  307. Hi again,
Could not make it without Lorazepam.. Ended up in hospital.. I am leaving for Korea in 2 days, I guess I will just have to see what happens..

  308. Hi Ed. Check in with your neurologist FIRST before you start decreasing or slowly stopping lorazepam. This drug has known withdrawal effects and you should stop taking it ONLY under medical supervision. Just so that you know…in general, you wean yourself from lorazepam by slowly by tapering the dose until you stop taking it altogether. This process can take days to weeks. Cold turkey withdrawal from lorazepam is not recommended. But once it is out of your system, you will no longer be physically dependent on the drug.

    Does this help?

  309. Hi, i have been using Lorazapan mg for the last years, i only take it before i go to sleep. how long will it take to get it out of my system. This is prescribed by my neurologist. How long will the effects last and how do i go about it ridding me of it. Thx

  310. Hi John. Do you have a prescription for the lorazepam? If so, just bring the Rx to the drug screen and you should be OK. Medical Review Officers read the results and compare them with industry cut off levels for therapeutic use. If not, it seems that your instincts are guiding you: a longer period for metabolism can increase chances that lorazepam go undetected.

  311. Hi – i took one .5 mb lorazepam 2.5 days ago and now I need to take a drug test – probably immunoassay with GC/MS to confirm. I figure it should be out of my system, but maybe I should stall and take the test tomorrow. Stupid me! I didn’t even think about it as an illicit drug!

  312. Hi again, Kat. Yes. Weaning off any dependence forming prescription medication helps ease symptoms of withdrawal. The best thing to do is to consult your prescribing doctor and ask about a tapering schedule to get off lorazepam. And to ask for medical advice on how to treat symptoms of withdrawal at home. Good luck!

  313. What is the best way to taper off? Cut a dose of half the doses until I can stop altogether? I take one milligram a day, divided by two, 1/2 morning, 1/2 at night.
    Thank you.

Leaving for Korea in one month.. needs to be gone. TY.

  314. Hi Kat. Panels are just multiple tests using the same specimen for different classes of drugs. For example: opiates, amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana, etc. Regardless, just take your prescription with you to the test and you should be OK.

  315. Yes, it is prescribed, as is Celexa. I do not know what type of drug test, but pretty sure it’s urine test.Don’t know about panels?

    Ty, Kat

  316. Hi Kat. Thanks for your question. Are you taking lorazepam with a prescription? If so, just present the Rx to the Medical Officer in charge of drug testing. If you are using as prescribed, your test will show NEGATIVE. Same for other prescription drugs like Celexa. What kind of test is required during the pre-employment drug screen? Urine? Blood? Hair? And how many panels? 5-7-9-10?

  317. I am going to move to Korea in August to teach. I need to be OFF my Lorazepam for a drug test. How long will it take to be gone. I take 1 mg a day..I take half a tab in the AM and the other half in the PM. TY, Kat

Also do you know if Celexa will show up on the test?

  318. Hi Annie. How long were you taking lorazepam? And how did you stop taking it – gradually tapering or cold turkey? And have you consulted your prescribing doctor?

  319. It’s been about 3 days since I’ve stopped taking lorazepam & i feel awful! I can’t sleep & I feel disoriented, dizzy, & like I’m high. When will I feel normal again? I hate this!!
