Thinking about quitting hydrocodone?

Developing a dependence on hydrocodone is common and even expected by doctors.  Why is cutting back so difficult? What happens when you stop taking hydrocodone?  Hydrocodone affects the central nervous system and smooth muscle tissue and can changes the way we perceive pain and might induce a change in mood.  But this action, while efficient, can also cause us to experience withdrawal symptoms when we quit or cut back.

General onset of withdrawal symptoms occurs within a few hours after hydrocodone effects wear off. But is you’re asking, “Hydrocodone withdrawal symptoms – how long?” know this: the length of time until withdrawal stops can vary from weeks to months later. More here about how long hydrocodone withdrawal lasts. And we invite your questions about hydrocodone withdrawal at the end.

How long until hydrocodone withdrawal starts?

Once you have decided to stop taking hydrocodone, withdrawal symptoms can start as early as a few hours after the effect of hydrocodone has worn off. The most common symptoms of withdrawal from hydrocodone include:

  • cold sweat and chills
  • diarrhea
  • drug craving
  • irritability
  • sleep disturbances
  • mental swings

How long do hydrocodone withdrawal symptoms last?

Hydrocodone withdrawal usually peaks around 72 hours after last dose and resolve within 7-10 days after last use. Symptoms of hydrocodone withdrawal can last anywhere between a few days to several months after you last take hydrocodone. The harsher, acute effects of withdrawal should resolve within about a week after last dose. However, people have reported insomnia, mood swings, and drug cravings long after hydrocodone detox has occurred.

Hydrocodone withdrawal timeline

As mentioned earlier, hydrocodone affects people differently. Symptoms of withdrawing from hydrocodone will change from person to person. But in general, if you taking hydrocodone for medical reasons in doses as prescribed, symptoms of withdrawal tend to be less intense than someone abusing the medication or taking higher doses than prescribed. Note also that it can take days to weeks to completely remove hydrocodone from the system. It is important to note that because hydrocodone is an opioid, withdrawal symptoms can be delayed. Therefore, it may take several weeks to months to no longer feel the effects of withdrawal symptoms.

24-72 hours hydrocodone withdrawal – General onset of symptoms can manifest shortly after the drug has worn off and linger for up to a few months after the medication is totally out of the system. It is during this time and especially during the first 72 hours that withdrawal symptoms peaks, which include: mood changes, sweats, diarrhea, extreme drowsiness, stomach pains, and abnormal skin sensations as well as possible respiratory depression.

Week 1 hydrocodone withdrawal – In the first week after stopping hydrocodone, symptoms of withdrawal tend to be the worst. Symptoms from the first onset diminish a bit and even out. However, during this phase of withdrawal symptoms can include continued irritability, waves of intense craving, depression, and exhaustion.

Week 2 hydrocodone withdrawal – After the first couple of weeks of stopping hydrocodone, protracted withdrawal symptoms may arise. Symptoms such as diarrhea, mood swing, irritation, insomnia, muscle cramps and back aches can surface during this phase of withdrawal from hydrocodone.

Weeks 3-4 hydrocodone withdrawal – During this stage of withdrawal, waves of cravings and psychological dependence are still persistent.

PAWS for hydrocodone –  Post-Acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS) is a set of symptoms that occur right after you stop taking hydrocodone and can last several months afterwards. Sleeping disturbance, irritability, and mood swings are typical of hydrocodone use and these symptoms can linger for weeks to months after your last dose of hydrocodone. Additionally, cravings for the drug can linger longer after you have stopped taking Hydrocodone. People suffering from hydrocodone addiction are encouraged to seek help in order to prevent relapse.

Hydrocodone withdrawal: how long?

Hydrocodone affects each person differently depending on the dosage and how long you have been taking hydrocodone. In other words, each withdrawal period is unique to the person taking hydrocodone. Additionally, various health concerns need to be taken into considration during hydrocodone detox. This is why experts always recommend medical supervision during any chemical or drug withdrawal.

  1. How can I reduce the involuntary leg reactions? Can I take something over the counter or do I need to see my doctor?

  2. Hi, I’m currently tapering off Norco after 2 years. I’m taking 7.5mg right now and at first it wasn’t bad but it seems this last week has been bad. I’m taking 1 more at night than I should be. I’ve also noticed that most of the time like when I was regulated with the 10/325mg I would get anxious at the 6 hour mark. I was taking too much last December so I had to get it under control. It didn’t take long. I was sleeping through the night and would go hours without needing it. I felt good. Now I feel like I’m back to where I started. How long should this last? I’m also on a sleep aid but that doesn’t always help. I don’t want to go back up to the 10/325. How do I get through this without needing an extra pill?

  3. My new Neurologist has decided to take me off of Oxycodone 10/523 and has reduced my Hydrocodone 10/325 to 1 dose once a week. I was taking approximately 40-60 mil a day. Should I expect to have severe withdrawal s? I have been on these meds for over a year.

  4. Grateful: I hope that you were able to quit. I hope all of you were able to quit. I am on my 7th day of no hydrocodone after taking it for the last 17 years. I can’t believe I have been taking it that long. But my irritably and brink of breakdown is getting the best of me. I hope I am able to keep off of them, but I find myself wanting to take one just so I won’t be as irritable. Good bless everyone.

  5. I have been taking hydrocodone (norco 7.5/325) for about 2 years which was prescribed to me for treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis, severe neck pain due to 2 slipped discs and lower back pain. I take two pills a day every 4 to 6 hours and this helps me tremendously with my pain. Before I took this my quality of life was terrible i could hardly get out of bed. I do take myself off of them for a few days to put my body in test mode for any kind of withdrawal symptoms and I have to say I honestly am not having any withdrawals what so ever the only thing I am experiencing is the severe pain I was having before I went on them so my question to you is how is it possible to not be addicted to this opioid after two years? God knows I am not complaining I hope I can continue to stay on this medication and not become addictive as it is helping me live a normal pain free life.

  6. Hey I’ve been taking tabs for about a year the most I’ve took is two at a time I’m currently stopping cold turkey this is day two n I’m in an amazing amount of pain how much longer will I have to go through this? I don’t want to be dependant and want this cycle to end before a strong addiction sets in please help!!

  7. Hello,
I wanted to share an easy way to taper off of your prescription. Whether you are “running out” 7 or 10 days early, or whether you want to quiet completely….this could help.
When you get down to, say, 10, or 20 pills….let’s take 10/325, as an example…Cut them into 1/3’rds, and put them in a bottled water. Ensure you keep the water out of reach, just like you would normal medications. Label the bottle. I bought a case of 40 waters from Costco for $2.99.
If you’re normally taking 5 pills a day, you still can! but…you must drink 15 bottles of water. Each bottle of water gets tougher to drink; however, you will get some relief with a small dosage. If you want 10 mg’s, you’ll need to drink 48 ounces of water.

I did this last month…and, the first day I drank about 10 water bottles, i.e., just over 3 pills. But, th8e next day, I drank maybe 6 or 7 bottles, because, I was getting tired of drinking so much water.
The point is, it’s easy to swallow a pill or 2….but, it’s tougher to drink 3 or 6 water bottles at once. And, if you do…good luck with the other 3 or 6.

When I was done with the water, I literally had 1 day of 5/10 withdrawal symptoms, followed by a 3/10 and 2/10, 1/10, etc. Instead of going through extreme withdrawals for 2 or 3 days, followed by 8/10, 7/10, etc….this helps a LOT.
Once you add it to water…you’re done!

  8. Thank you to everyone for your posts. God bless us all. My story, my frustration, my pain, my heartache, my shame, etc. etc. etc. has already been told by everyone on this blog so there’s no point in my telling you all what you already know, other that I’m here because I’m on Day 1 of my journey to be free from a 15 year 10/325/ 5-10 pill habit a day, and only because I have to be because for only the second time in that long, I’m out! That’s what brought me to this blog, reading all your stories, speaking to my heart about how much I profoundly want to be free from opiates.I’m particularly interested in knowing whether “Tired of Being a Slave to Drugs” has been able to maintain abstinence from opiates. I pray she has. I pray everyone on this blog has. As for me…I don’t know…I pray for me, too. Thank you, God… I’m grateful in spite of my addiction. No matter how demoralizing this addiction is, and how much I’m a slave to it, it will NEVER come before my love for You!

  9. So here’s my story, well some anyways. I’ve been on methadone 10mg twice a day and Norco 10mg 4 times a day for the past 6 years. Got fed up with needing a pill to get out of bed, a pill to sleep and a pill to get things done. Decided enough is enough and made an appt to see the prescribing md and asked to be weaned off which in turn causes him to decide to no longer treat me. Needless to say I took matters into my own hands. I eventually weaned off Norco then proceeded to taper off the methadone over a month. The pain and agony was so miserable that I needed to use the Norco to ease the pain. Took half a Norco 10mg every 2/3 hours for the first two weeks or so then on the third week a went down to half a Norco 10mg every 6 hours. This seemed to take me backwards and I felt the worst I’ve ever felt. The following week I took Norco half a Norco 10mg every 8 hours and now I’m on one half Norco 10mg tab every 12 hours which is 10 mg a day. Even with this the pain of withdrawal has been difficult although I do believe it’s training my brain to never go back to these type of mess. Had a plan to go down to one half 10 mg tab a day which is 5 mg but now I’m thinking I should just go to zero and get it over with. My withdrawals have been dragging on for almost 2 months and it seems that about the first 3-5 days after I decrease the Norco are the worst. Any suggestions? I do have flexeril and xanax available but I don’t want to go from one dependence to another to another. ✌️

  10. I’ve been taking hydros for about 3 years on & off but for the last year or so I’ve been taking one daily. It’s been two months without a hydro and I’ve never felt better , however can’t stop shaking , hard to sleep & scared to work because I was high at all my jobs. Will I ever be normal again ?

  12. I have been taking hydrocodone 5/ 4 times a for at least 15 years. Have recently cut back to 3 and now 1and 1/2. Feeling nauseated and jittery. My doctor has been helping me
    Wish me luck

  13. My message is.that I have chronic back pain. I’m 59 and have suffered from major back pail 4 7 years. I have had 3 surgeries within 21/2 years. NOT ON HAS HELPED ME! The last surgery was 10 hrs long not only opening up my back but also a cross my lower abdomen all the was as OCD to remover all of the metal the previous dr did that ruined mm. I have been on and off opiatt but the pain is the worse.ive been through 100 of injections to no avail. Burning of all nerve endings . No pain help. 14. As a boy who got hooked on Vicodin at age 11 from being jumped at school because ‘you sound gay’. Withdrawal is tough. very. with Hydrocodone, and similar opiates I detoxed from like Morphine… I had multiple seizures trying to cold turkey. I was prescribed clonodine to take the edge off. But it got to the point where opiate addiction put my life in danger. I was on opiates for almost 10 years. some of you might not. Always seek help. don’t be afraid. Because I was selfish and didn’t care about my body. after a 3 day 30 (10mg) vicodin binge i was diagnosed with edema and liver disease. So guys please. If you can’t take the withdrawal symptoms seek medication management. I highly suggest suboxone, and would not suggest methadone. Many friends of mine relapsed and over dosed on methadone treatment. tomorrow i’ll be completing 6 months of being off opiates. I will say Suboxone isn’t addictive to me, but I know that if I take it. I can’t go relapse and get some opiates off the street. Addiction is hard. Don’t choose a drug over your body , soul, morals and most of all, your family.

  15. I have been 14 days off Norco I was on this for ten years my dr tried to get me to take suboxane although the I never abused my meds made me sick for the two days I just said enough to and cold turkey cramps diarrhea the only issues I am betting this bad drug didn’t choose to take but major in jury’s are where I started

  16. I was in 15-45 mg of oxy a day because I was bored and did it for fun. Stupid idea. Doing the steps I’m about to say will work! This will make getting off them a lot easier than wht most say.

Biggest problem is access to the drug.

1 burn all bridges with people you get them from. Piss them off so the. Never want to talk to you again. Chances are they are dealers and you are risking your freedom talking to them anyway. And dope head are nothing but drama.

2 get a book. Make a schedule of activities for the next week. Physical things that will make u sweat and DO THEM LIKE CLOCK WORK!

3 load up on b12, b6, and eat bananas.

4 tell somone close to you that you are a addict so they will hold u accountable.

5 take light dosage of xanax until ur sleep patterns get normal.

I hope this helps. I know it’s a bitch. But if you are on here reading this then you are alrdy looking for a put. DO IT.

The easiest way I quit taking oxy was

  17. I have been on opiets for 20 years but latley I have upped my consumption to 180 10/325 every 15 days and that leaves me with nothing for 15 days till my next script. I have been able to buy some and or use Coke to fill in the gaps. I am now at home bound to break free of the drugs. I am not good and really scared of each day I need to get through. I have been clean for 4 days. Could I be looking at a year or so to get back my life. My 3 rd back surgery was a success so it’s time. But it’s so hard

  18. I took lortab 5/325 four times a day for almost two months. Since the withdrawal, Ive had these annoying muscle twitches. Is this normal?

  19. I just completed day 5 tonight with no pain pills. I feel like I have went from being a rabbit to a turtle, so slow. Everything I do I feel like I’m wading through water. The muscle spasms in my legs have gotten better but are not completely gone. I have not slept a full night since I quit. I even went to the store and got OTC sleep aids, three different kinds and not one of them works. I also bought melitonin. I just pray tonight is better. I actually felt like I could actually have a conversation today. Before today I have avoided people like the plague. My temperature still has not regulated itself. I get a chill from even a fan on low and I wore a sweater to the store today even though it was hot. I know people were thinking I was crazy. I’m glad I found this sight because I know I’m not alone and I pray for all of you. I told my Dr. I just couldn’t ever go through this again. He is suggesting Lyrica, I need to read up on it.

  20. I have quit hydro/Norco cold turkey. It has been hell. I have had screws and a plate put in my spine. I want help with the pain but not opioids anymore. Has anyone took Lyrica and had any withdrawals? Any other suggestions? I also tried Nucynta and you withdraw from that as well, it is also a narcotic. There has got to be a better way.

  21. I was prescribed Hydrocodone/Acetaminophen at 10/325 for shoulder pain caused by a herniated disc in my neck. Started taking them at dosage of 3 per day. I stopped taking them cold turkey when I had one pill left. This is the end of the third day. The first day was ok. But that evening I had some of the worst nightmares of my life. They all had to do with places I had never visited, people totally unfamiliar to me, unable to find my way around those places, feeling desperately lost. I woke up about 10 times that night, sleeping in 1/2-hour or 45-min intervals. The next day I got up exhausted. The first thing I noticed was an odor I thought was in the house. My wife couldn’t smell it. I sat down for breakfast and the toast tasted like that smell. I couldn’t each much because of that. I had a late lunch and the food started out ok, but after a few more bites, I could taste that same taste as with breakfast. The smell followed me throughout the day. I could smell it almost everywhere, especially on my skin. I could taste it in everything I tried to eat. I am suspecting that the chemicals are trying to exit my body through my pores and my saliva glands. Not sure what else to think. Today is the third day, and I still smell that strange smell (like burned rubber or some kind of wood) and I taste it in almost all food. Tired of it. But the hardest part of this withdrawal is the psychological aspects. I have strong feelings of detachment or separation from things that are normally special to me. I go through periods when it feels like I did not totally wake up from those freaky dreams. The loneliness and detachment has been so strong at times that it caused me to weep uncontrollably…..more out of sadness because I wanted so much to feel the delight from my pets or the joy from some favorite music….but those things were difficult to experience. It has been a bit terrifying at times, because I feel trapped in these thoughts and feelings as if no one can reach in and make contact with me. The only person I feel connected to is my precious wife of 42 years, who I thank God for every day. The second evening I was afraid to go to be alone, so although she wasn’t sleepy, she agreed to lie next to me and read some soothing devotional passages from a book given to us by a pastor years ago. I lay there quietly with a cloth across my eyes (to shut out the light) and eventually fell peacefully asleep. I did wake up about 4 separate times that night (to drink water…I was parched) and then later to go pee. In the morning I felt just a bit more rested, but guess what…..that smell was everywhere (again, my wife couldn’t smell it) and what I tried to eat tasted like the smell. I still had a couple periods of weeping but that was when I was sharing with my wife exactly what I was experiencing, and she was apologizing for not knowing what to do. What an angel! One thing that helped my tortured thoughts of separation and disconnection and lack of general happiness, was my wife took me for a very long drive around the countryside….about 2 1/2 hours on the road. I was helpful. But still, when we came up the driveway, that feeling of “there’s no place like home” simply was not there and it made me cry. I have always been elated to come back home since it has been my favorite place to be for years and years. I share all of these details so maybe someone out there can relate and either comment something helpful to me or anyone else. I am encouraged by many of the posts, because my use of Hydro was not for very long compared to others and I’m sure these horrible symptoms will eventually fade away. I hate pharmaceuticals. Never have liked taking them because they ALL have side-effects. And the paid meds are ALL potentially addictive. Doctors fail their patients when they do not explain the meds pros-and-cons. They expect the patient to read that long page of fine print that comes with the prescription. Not fair. Anyway, all of you suffering from w/d……don’t despair and don’t give up. You need someone there for you who cares enough to bear through this with you. Blessings to all.

  22. I have been taking Hydrochodone for about 3 months. I wasn’t taking it every day, only when my pain got real bad. I took my last one two days ago. I had diarrhea one night and now I keep getting headaches. Is there sometning I can take for headache without it upsetting my stomach. How long do you think it will take me to get over this.

  23. I still cant walk and i have no knee replcement i no longer have my doctor who done 9 suegerys on my left leg and i have taitainium in my leg still cant walk other pain meds not working so i have no narcos nor no doctor due to my insurance what do i do beside felling like dieing???please help

  24. I was taking Norco 10/325 plus motrin 800 for about 6 years. I would only take one of each a day. Recently I started feeling sick with them so I started taking half a norco..I was ok for a few months..but then I was starting to feel really irritable by the end of the I went down to 1/4 of Norco..still feeling ansy and moody. So I finally stopped 4 days ago’ I was tired of the mood swings and being irritable all the time. Since I was only taking one a day of each can you still go through withdrawals? I’ve been feeling like crap and feeling even more long will this last? And insomnia & diarrhea also..

  25. I have been taking hydrocodone 7/325 for several years and the doctor stopped me “cold turkey” 3 days ago and I am feeling some withdrawal symptoms. How long will this last and is there anything I can take to help with the withdrawal?
    Thank you

  26. i have been taking lortab and now known as norco 10-325 due to back an neck fusion an most recently due to 5 major broken bones ankle arm an wrist I have taken the norco snice 2008 4 times a day i had actuall weined myself down to tabs a day before all the broken bones the broken bones inccident occured in KC MO therefore i had only stayed in kc for 15 mos and due to those event chose to leave kc and again due to all the broken bones I dealt with two orthopedic surgeons and never had a pain management doctor there I have now relocated in the Houston Tx area
they totally force you to dr shop as drs they say they cant writ a script but funny thing is one of the indian drs didnt even offer any kind of assisstance to get off of the norco my primary dr an pharm both advised going cold turkey could be damaging to my health i have already landed in a er but again they offered NO assisstant to the problem especially since i was there with hypertension actually at stroke level 220 over 90 how the hell do you find an educated medical proffessional to help living in texas is like living in a prison

  27. @pb I am going on two months to, I am so so so tired and drained. In a almost depressed mindset but too foggy to really be depressed. I have quit so many times and never felt this way! I guess that’s what I get for not being strong enough to stay away from it. It’s a mental thing. It only last a few months from what I read. Hang in there it will all go away.

  28. I got off of pain meds after 7 plus years of taking. Had cancer surgery 3 times then got neuropathy and arthritis right after 🙁 . After tired of the doctors playing games with meds and loosing my doctor of years to a move I decided it was time. Its been 2 months and i still feel like shit. Mentally I try to keep myself ok but not having anything for the physical pain sucks. No energy, diarrhea, constant yawning. I weaned myself off and didnt have time for rehab or treatment due to raising 2 kids and having to work. It sucks.
Cbd pills help with appetite, stomach pain, and nausea though :). 10 to 1 ratio the thc is so low. You dont get high and it really is the only thing that has helped me minimally. Its expensive though. $35 for 10 pills

  29. I took hydrocodone for over 2 years maybe taking 1 pill and a half each day at bedtime. I just recently had back surgery and now I’m not taking the meds. My appetite is none and stomach problems has started. Is all of this due to me not taking the meds anymore. Its been about four days now since my last pill.

  30. Dr. never told me what Norco was or the dangers, but treated my chronic back pain with it for 2 years straight. I was on 4 tabs a day of 10/325. I found out what it was, how addictive it was and didn’t want to be a SLAVE to a drug or a pharmacy so I decided to go off.
I tapered down for 1 month, from 4 pills, to 3.5 pills, to 3 pills, to 2.5 pills all the way down to 1/2 tab a day. When I could go 1/2 tab a day for 1 week I made the final step off to nothing.
It’s been a long hard road, and even now 10 days after NO Norco, I can’t sleep, I’m restless, agitated, moody, Hungry, chills, aching body pains.

I’m so angry at the doctor for not telling me what the hell he was putting me on that I’m working on enacting new LAWS that REQUIRE ALL DOCTORS to show patients a 5 minute video on the RISK of using Norco longer then 5 days.

It’s a tough road, but worth fighting it out to get off this horrible drug that destroys your body and enslaves you.

  31. Hi I been taking Norco about 5 yrs them I started to mix Mets with them about 3yrs ago, I started use cause I was going through a hard time in life, I have four kids n i want my life back so I stop taking the mets 10 days ago n still was taking 1 Norco a day n having a cooler with it so it wasn’t that back with them, but I took my last Norco 2 days ago n I’m having RLS bad I had to go to the hospital for it they gave me muscle relaxer which work but then my arms start feeling the same way I just want to know how long this will last? I just want to be over this n movie on with my life.

  32. Hi, I find it only fair to give my experience during the withdrawal phase. It started with a friend giving me 2-10mg/325 vicodin pill, I loved the sensation that it provided, so I searched for more and more. Before I knew it I went from 1 pill a day to 6 10s a day, with 2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon and 2 at night. I felt that I did alot while on vicodin. I read the blog post that people got prescribed for pain, I only used as Recreational purpose, and I want to apologize to the people that take them for medical. So I decided it was time to drop the habit because it was starating to affect my family life. I’ve been on vicodin for 2 years, I’ve quit before until I got a tooth pulled and was prescribed more for pain, then I started all over again…ugggh the misary. So here I am vicodin free since 09/04/2016. Last 2 pills were taken @6:30pm. I’m now 4 days clean and feel great. I started feeling the first of withdrawal in the morning of Monday 09/05/2016, reAL exhausted, yawning, teary eye. My feet get really cold and sweaty. I slept until 4pm off and on never getting more than an hour at most. I’m doing this cold turkey. So I get out of bed at 4pm and visit with the family but have the feeling I don’t want to be bothered!. I started with the horrible diarrhea and stomach cramps. Day 2…I woke up for work…horrible feeling, chills, goose bumps.Day 2 was horrible with sweating profusely. Every night of the withdrawal I hAve really bad rls, I try the benedryl, but just makes me.super tired and irritable, but still rls. Day 3 started with nausea no vomitting, diarhea, sweating went away. Day 4 came around which is today, felt nausea…diarrhea, but felt alot better. Getting about 5 hours asleep a night off and on tossing and turning because of rls. I’ve been thru this before on my own. Usually go thru phases of diarhea back to normal back to diarhea back to normal. Rls and diarhea are the last symptoms that I experience. Oh and the loss of a petite for the first 2 days, after that I slowly started to eat. I’ve decided it’s not worth having the great feeling for 30min and then the upside down world of depending on chasing those pills. I work in the medical field’s extremely embarrassing and plain out wrong. This addiction blog has made the experience alot easier reading everyone’s journey to detox. I hope this helps someone quit the habit. I’m going strong! And hoping i.can start my life with my family instead if relying on a pill to.get me.thru the day. Peace much love to everyone going thru withdrawals. I’ve been to Iraq and I’d rather go back to Iraq than go thru withdrawals!

  33. Been taking loritab tens for 6 year 12 a aday quit taking any 5 days ago and took a half of one this morning and last night will the withdraws be as bad as the first time

I am going to get a taper but until then out for 2 days due to a mix up. So today of course started the withdrawl symptoms on day 1 and 2 will be the same i am sure. Do i start the taper friday or since I have not had any for 2 days just not take the taper script?

  36. Hi. Ive been taking Vicodin for about 5 years for back pain. At first it was like 1 or 2 pills a day of 7.5mg , and increased to as much as 10 a day of 7.5mg . I knew that I was taking to much and decreased to 5 a day of 10mg. I have tried to quit taking them so many times because it got to the point where I was flying through my script then finding friends to get them from and then buying them til I got my next script all because my body could not deal with the withdrawal symptoms of being extremely tired and the cold sweats those 2 WD symptoms are the worst. I came to realize that this has to be mind over matter and I have to be stronger than this damn pill. So a friend of mine told me about this natural stuff called Kratom . This is my third day of no Vicodin but also my third day using the Kratom. I do not have any WD symptoms at all. I still don’t have the correct dosage down for the Kratom and my brain still keeps thinking about needing more energy and to go ahead and get a Vicodin, but I keep saying no. I really don’t want to rely on a pill to get me through the day. Now sorry for all the rambling but my question is how long should I take the Kratom to get past the Vicodin WD ? Thanks

  37. I recently had my tubes removed so i can’t have anymore babies. I was given Norco 7.5 (30pills) 4xday. those didn’t help so i had to go back to my OB and get a different script. He put me on Percocet 7.5 (90pills) 4xday. I am now feeling the effects of withdraw from them. It’s there anything else that can help with the pain in my body and my head?

  38. Hello I’m having knee replacement surgery in two weeks. I have been taking 3 vicodin 5/350 a day for past three years. My orthopedist doesn’t wand me to take them before my surgery. I will run out tomorrow. Will I go into withdrawl on the table?

  39. I been taking hydro… For about 3 1/2 years now… And my dossage level these last 6 months have been about 10 a day of the tens… And these last four days I only took 2 pills but I am sneezing weak fog headed.. And legs are killing me.. Bad head aches… So wht should I do and how long…

  40. my husband has been taking 1 pill a day – i think it’s norco – that yellow pill – for about six years. he stopped taking them four days ago and feels terrible. is it common on such a small dose? should i call his dr?

  41. I stopped taking hydrocodone 16 days ago. I used it for migraine/headache pain in addition to imitrex. The neurologist prescribed it for me because she wanted me to take less imitrex. I used hydrocodone for 3 years in varying amounts. For the past 2 years I have tapered off from 40mg per day to 5 mg per day. I guess the biggest issue is that I was still taking 5 mg almost every day, but would skip 1 or 2 days occaisionally. My question is this: when will I be able to use hydrocodone again without worrying about addiction?

  42. hi I have been on hydro 10 for 24 yrs. really bad vehicle accident crushed my whole left side. I am in pain but feel the pills are making it worst. I tried to quit several times but something would always happen. my son died of cancer, my daughter was car jacked and murdered. I have been using them to stop a lot of emotional pain I think. I stopped cold turkey 3 days ago very sick and blood pressure has really gone up. I have had cancer and lost my voice and I live alone don’t know if I should try to quit or not. I am 67 yrs old would it hurt that much to stay on them. life not that great anyway. thanks

    1. Hi Keith. I’m really sorry for your losses… the pain of losing a child is unbearable. First, I suggest you speak with your doctor about quitting hydrocodone, and if you want to do it, I suggest you consult with him/her to help you create an individualized tapering schedule. Then, I also think it would be worth talking to a trusted spiritual or community leader or to confide in someone that you trust. Finally, seek professional support through a family counselor, or support group meetings. You are not alone…and there are ways to process your love and concern in a healthy, supportive way.

  43. I’ve been using narcotic pain meds off and on since 2006 which I thought was due to pain from my braces and several surgeries, particularly having my jaw joints replaced. However, I realized I had been experiencing Serotonin Syndrome for about 8-9 years and was never diagnosed as the MDs in the area were not familiar with the condition despite the FDA warning them in 2006. Also, I learned that Lexapro, the beginning of my downfall, can cause pain and insomnia along with many other side effects. In fact, the MDs thought I was manic but when I went off Lexapro they realized it was the med that caused me to appear to be ‘too happy’ or manic. Also, I had a psychiatrist take me off valium cold-turkey as well and I’ve been struggling with bad to severe insomnia for the last 5 years. I’ve been on oxycodone periodically as I learned I was experiencing muscle ridgidity and my muscles all over ached especially my jaw joints that I had replaced in 2005 and now hurt worse than before surgery due to muscle ridgidity caused by undiagnosed Serotonin Syndrome. My jaws flared up really bad and so I’m on oxycodone again for 5 days and realized that it helps me sleep but I can’t keep going on the med. Please help me! I’ve been on disability since 2008 due to the jaw joint replacements and when I was ready to go back to the work force in 2011 was when I was taken off Valium cold-turkey and taken off narcotic meds. I’m highly educated; however, my writing isn’t a testimony to that as I struggle having intelligent conversations due to the long bout of insomnia. My current MD, who is wonderful and LISTENS to me, is struggling what to do as I’m extremely sensitive to meds and realized I can’t take serotonin-producing meds as they cause depression and suicidal thoughts.

  44. Thanks everybody for your input, I Know its hard to quit this stuff but we have too. whether or not you see the light at the end of the tunnel, its there. the good things in life don’t come easy, but with hard work and determination you will achive your goals.. sure we want it now,but it doesn’t work like that. gotta feel the pain so you never go back.
love you guys and thank you.

  45. I took Hydrocodone for almost 4 years. I took my last dose 11 days ago. I have had baclofen and an antidepressant to help with the anxiety I have been experiencing. I suffered from a fall on the job and broke my back and injured my chest at the same time. Sleeping is hard to do so that is why I take baclofen to help me sleep. It is a muscle relaxer. I pray I never put another hydrocodone pill in my mouth. I had always taken darvocett for pain and when they took it off the market, it has caused so many of us to become addicts. This is a horrible drug and I cannot believe our pharmacuetical companies cannot come up with something better and safer.

  46. I’ve been reading everyone’s posts, & they’ve been EXTREMELY helpful, particularly since it gives me encouragement & a reminder that the lousiness I can expect is, indeed, temporary, even if it’s impossible to predict how long it’ll take to get past the withdrawal stage. I originally had no intention of posting, but decided that if it doesn’t end up being cathartic in some way for me, maybe I can at least give someone else the encouragement these posts have provided to me.

My story is similar to many other posters here (which, again, brought some relief in feeling I wasn’t alone). After the birth of my second child in 2004, my brother’s wife, both of whom were living with us at the time, brought me a Vicodin bc I was laying in bed, cramping horribly. They told me to help myself whenever I felt the need; in hindsight, I realize they were honestly only trying to help me out, but I wish it was never offered, because I instantly fell in love with how the pills made me feel. I was “on”- I could do anything, was up for anything anyone invited me to go do, taking care of my kids was a breeze, I was fun to be around- life was really, really good. Fast forward to 2007, & I was spending at least $500 a month buying them off of friends with comparable addictions since they knew where to find them. I’d gotten up to 8 10/325’s a day, & after my husband lost his job, I knew I couldn’t maintain my habit. August 2008, I quit for about a month. The withdrawal sucked, but I’d tapered down for a few weeks, so I don’t think it was as severe as it could’ve been. I was SO proud of myself, & was taking my kids to the park, museums- being the mom they deserved. Until I met someone that the first time I mentioned I had a bad headache, offered her Norco up to me freely (since she suspected I’d only take one here or there). I was back to square one, & haven’t gone a single day without taking anything since. I’d convinced myself that since I was only taking 4 a day, tops, usually only taking 2.5, I had things “under control”. I was fooling myself.

In that time period, I’ve blown through a substantial inheritance that was meant to help set us up for retirement, because I didn’t want my husband to know about my problem & make him wonder where all his money went (I’m a stay at home mom). My relationship with my husband has deteriorated to him saying he doesn’t know how much longer he can stay, dealing with my mood swings & inability to get out or stay out of bed, every day. I feel like my kids have lost respect & faith in me because I’m so unreliable. I commit to things when I’m on the meds, only to realize I feel like crap when the time comes to honor my obligation. I’m NOT a dumb person (not suggesting anyone here is, trust me), so it kills me that despite knowing the risk of taking this crap, I made the stupid decision to give it another go after going through the withdrawal before years ago. I feel like I’ve let everyone important to me down- despite only the people I buy them from knowing the extent of my addiction. I let them down in other ways, though- which is why, I HOPE, my desire to knock it off & make this dependency a thing of the past. They haven’t given me that buzzed, energetic feeling in years- only make me tired, moody, & chain smoke. My home is about to enter into foreclosure, & I can’t help but think- no, KNOW- that my dependence has led to that. It’s not too late to remedy that situation, but I know it can’t be done if I’m still wasting $ on this stuff. So, here I am, full if determination in this moment, to make a change. I think that by seeing how many other people who felt similarly disgusted with their dependence but who have succeeded in conquering it, I can find the strength to do it, too. At least, I really, really hope so. Spending years believing that the only way you can get through the day is by popping pills is going to be a hard thing to overcome, but the reality is, at least for the past few years, they really haven’t helped me, but contributed to the things that are falling apart in my life now. I’m tired of freaking out before a vacation over whether or not I’ll have enough pills to make it through- I’ve had the husband take the kids while I stayed home a couple times before, so I could find pills locally (since I don’t have an rx), since I knew I’d be out of luck in a different state. I’m angry with myself for missing out on those trips; my kids are 14, 12 & 3, & only the 14 y.o. has ever really experienced a mom that wasn’t doped up on something, & she was probably too young to even remember it. Just acknowledging that & typing it out has me in tears- this is never in a million years what I expected to be like when I was younger. I’m honestly ashamed of the shell of a person I’ve become, so it’s fair to say, for me, I’ve hit rock bottom. Actually, that probably happened as I was blowing through the inheritance, but better late than never, I guess? I hope? I know nothing will improve if I don’t take steps to improve them, so it’s time.

I’m terrified of going through withdrawal, particularly because since I was never honest about my addiction, I’m not sure what my family will be thinking as I go through it. I’m too embarrassed & afraid to tell them the truth. I’m praying that I don’t face months & months of symptoms, as some have, because I’m afraid that’ll allow me to justify giving a friend a call.

The things that are encouraging me are looking forward to the ability to do things without having to count out pills or cash before deciding whether or not I can bring myself to do them, the pride I’ll feel once I get past withdrawal, being the mom & wife that the people I know I love more than anything deserve, being able to pay bills without first setting aside $ for pills, & hopefully (after withdrawal, obviously) having a more predictable & appropriate mood given each situation, & just generally not perceiving myself as a piece of shit for putting myself in this situation. The desire to quit has been in the back of my mind for at least a year, but the fear of withdrawal has trumped that. I think the risk of losing our family home, having to uproot my kids from schools they’re thriving at, is what finally trumped my fear of withdrawal. There’s just too much to lose if I don’t make a change.

I’ve been down to 2 a day for about 10 days, but I’m about to be out, so rather than attempt to prolong moderate withdrawal symptoms, I think I may as well just quit & remind myself that things ease up over time. There’s been a flu going around, so I plan on blaming my symptoms on that. I know the dishonesty has led to the self-loathing that’s built up recently, but I’d rather come clean once I’M clean, than face the embarrassment of admitting it now- hence the LONG post… I had to spit it out somewhere. Honestly, I’m most afraid of the depression, as it’s already present- but I’m not convinced it hasn’t been brought on by the lack of confidence & sense of shame I’ve carried by being an addict. Plus, I have a psychiatrist, so if I feel I need an antidepressant to avoid suicide, it’s readily available. I’d rather get through this without one, but gotta weigh the pros & cons, y’know?

Thanks to everyone for sharing their stories. The most helpful posts have been from those who have updated their progress as time went on, & I intend to do the same. There is nothing I’d love more than to come back in a few months to state I’ve stayed off this crap- & second to that, to possibly offer encouragement to anyone feeling the way I do now. I KNOW it can be done- I just can’t back down in a moment of weakness.

Seriously- thank you all for sharing.

  47. I had an infected wisdom tooth removed and got prescribed 10/325 hydrocodones. I took them for a week and ran out. I already have withdrawal symptoms. I’ve been shaking, cold, my legs hurt, shallow breathing, loss of appetite, constipation at times, diarrhea other times, can’t sleep, ringing in my ears, and mood swings. This is a serious drug. Never felt anything like this before. Stay away from this drug or use it exactly as prescribed and no more. Hopefully you will not have these symptoms as I have. Good luck to all trying to get through these withdrawals. One week of taking them, wow.

  48. If I am taking 5mg og hydrochordone 3 times a day and stopped my morphine 15mg 3 times a day cold turkey will I get withdrawals?

  49. I was on this drug for six to eight weeks back problem. Got a Epidorallast week went off for two three days.I couldn’t sleep and nervous. So I went back on hydrocodone only to get sleep two tablets per day for four days. Haven’t had any for 24 hours. Now tired and can’t sleep nerves shaky. How can I get some sleep. How long withdraw will be and when should it ease up?

  50. What if you been taking hydocodone for twenty five years and been cuting down from 120 to 90 now 75 my Dr is cuting me now taking for fibroymalgia .

  51. I took Hydrocodone for a month .Now that I stopped taking it I have real bad withdrawal symptoms
Is there some I can take. I am 75 years old. Tomorrow will be 7 days that I stopped. The doctor gave me Gabapentin 300mg but I do not want to take any drugs. Help

  52. I have taken hydrocodone for 12 years but never exceeded 50 mg a day ( typical was 30 mg to control my arthritis pain). I stopped 6 days ago and I am handling it well . My question is how long before my sexual function returns to normal (Erection was never a problem but I became totatally desensitized and could not ejaculate from normal love making friction but through labarous manual or oral manipulations. Even when the ejaculation occurred , it was barely pleasurable. Help

  53. Hi I took hydrocodone for over a week. I took my last one 2 days ago. I stopped because I wasn’t able to go #2 that good. And now I am nauseated, my whole body feels hot, I can’t fall asleep tonight. Can I really be withdrawaling?

  54. I have come to realize that the physical pan is not what I need to escape. I do not like to feel. In my life time I have chased one drug after another to deaden the emotions. With that being said I would like things to be as quick and easy as possible. Recently, l withdrew from benzos (3 months ago) and my sleep pattern has not returned to normal (whatever normal is), but I believe I am ready for the next step. I have been on hydrocodone for over ten years with dosages going from 10mg 4-6 times a day to 3.5 two times a day, with no regular schedule, just depends on life’s drama. RIGHT NOW I am so done with medications and their Side effects…so I would like to clear my system while I am dedicated to the idea and feeling strong. My question…can I stop SSRIs (small Dosage) and hydrocodone (about 7.5 to 10mg per day) at the same time??? LOOKING FOR SUGGESTIONS TO MAKE WITHDRAWL EASIER…I AM CURRENTLY IN THERAPY

  55. I have used hydrocodone for 20 years off and on. Mainly on but I’m seeing a new doctor who took me completely off of it and gave me fentanol patches. 12.5 mg.
It’s been 8 days since I’ve had my norco and I have decided not to take the fentanol patch because of my high blood pressure. I’m really not sure why he didn’t taper me off of the norco. I want to know why he prescribed something so strong for me and I feel so numb inside, nervous, and pain. I have herniated disc and other health problems with anxiety and nerves. Any advise would be appreciated. Thank you

  56. Dr took me from 3 (7.5) Loritab a day to 1 (7.5) a step down… Because I asked for Lidocaine pain patches, to help me stop taking narcotics…
It seemed to make him mad..
He had told me the pain patches had to be pretty approved..
I told him.ID used them before so I called my insurance and they said they were covered…
Then he wanted to take me off all the regular meds..
He told me you weren’t supposed to take ,Norco and Tramadol..
I said you gave them to me that way for 5 years and even after telling me that , he still wrote them this time…
He has twice wrote my script for the wrong amount..
    Take 3 a day…and write the script for 30.

The pharmacist would say..that’s just ten days worth…
    So now Im worried… Will.I have heart issues… I have a heart problem…or will I get sick??

  57. Was up everyone
Iam 37 years old and 2008 I was a blacksmith had a piece of steel blow up on me and I almost died I ended having back surgery because I got thrown moral of the story is in 2008 the doctor put the devil in my hand 10/325 Norcos I took 4 to5 a day till this past 4 days I’m so sick of this drug I did it cold turkey but its not over yet ,I’ve woke up in a pool of sweat ,my calves locking up on me ,my bowels are loose ,cramps but I get up go to work and keep my mind going you can do this people stay focused on the prize and its worth it my wife and two kids mean more than this little white devil pill I wish all of you the beat FIGHT ON!!!

  58. I have been taking hydrocodone for about maybe 1 haft years and I take them 1 3 times a day. I started quiting the first week and I will be stoping my second week tuesday the 22 of march. then the next and last one the 29th of march. what and how long will the withdraw be.

  59. My first day of hydrocodone detox, I’m 61 years old.
Sweating and chills. Leg pains. The clonidine is helping somewhat.

  60. My doctor tells me that I should first switch to Tylenol #3 from hydrocodone. He says in his experience that withdrawal from Tylenol #3 is easier than withdrawal from hydrocodone in terms of withdrawal symptoms. Have you heard this before? I currently take 25mg hydrocodone and intend on reducing it by 5mg per day each of the next 5 weeks?? Sound okay??? Ed

  61. I was prescribed 4X10mg percs a day for 18 months. I was on pain management for my shoulder (Labrum 100% destroyed) Hand/Wrist fused dealing with major pain and then I was diagnosed with Orchitis linked to when I had the Mumps virus as a kid. I got use to the pills and I broke down and abused my medication because I needed a break from the constant chronic pain. That scared me so I decided to go cold turkey. I went 54 hours straight with no sleep to start the process. That was a living hell considering also dealing with other symptoms. I am in week 3 now from pain management and I still cannot evacuate a decent bowel and I am averaging maybe 3 hours sleep a day. My body is tired but my mins isn’t on the same page. Every night it will be after 4am before I will doze off and I always have a weird dream that wakes me any where from 1 to two hours later and once I’m awake the pain just rips on me. Its like clock work. I take vitamins and eat healthy. I wish I could get some sleep. I do have thoughts now and then craving for a pill because I need a break and some sleep. Sleeping pills don’t do a dang thing. It actually gives me a reverse affect that comes with major RLS. So I won’t take/ try it anymore. I do see my doc on Monday to see if I can get a couple steroid in injections to help the cause. I am proud to say I am on week 3 and winning this fight. Please share a way to get me 4 or 5 straight hours sleep.

  62. Due to 3 different surgeries from late October 2016 to February 2017 I was prescribed Norco. Took the last dose 2-26-17.
Shortly after last pill next day or so, I’m feeling like I have the flue very tired somewhat sleepless a bit of nauseous little not much. I’m still in recovery from major foot surgery can’t drive an only walk with walker. Do have pain but only taking Advil.
Is it possible I’m going through mild withdrawals really don’t feel well no energy at all I’m like a dead weight. Was afraid of this happening 4 mo on Norco . Please help with this I’ve told no one an hoping in a couple more days these feeling vanish.
Thank you so very much…… Mia

  63. I’ve been clean now for 2 months I’m so glad I got out from under the spell good luck to all that are trying just know that it is possible take it one day at a time

  64. Ive been taking 5/325 norco for about 2 months straight about 200 pills for pain. I was wondering if my withdrawal will be less then most. Its been about 24hrs since my last dose im experience flu like symptoms and diarrhea both aren’t that bad. Is this the worse of it?

  65. I had back surgery 7 weeks ago with fusion! I had been taking Hydrocodone after and have been sick with nausea the whole 7 weeks! I tapered down to 1/2 morning and night then stopped 3 days ago , ! I’m sti my very nauseated can’t eat have lost 16lbs

  66. I have been on this medication for over 10 years come to a point where I’d like to get off of it and down from 5 pills a day I’m down there two pills at seven and a half milligrams today as I did half a pill I just did another half about 1 o’clock how do I get off of it without having severe withdrawals and how long will thank you

  67. I’ve been taking norco for about 6ish yrs 10pills of10mg daily well, now I’m pregnant ant I’ve been off them for 3 days. Granted I’m already on my deathbed with being sick but its only like holy fuck at 4am ish I’m tossing crazydreams about norcos and my main issue is the mental like it’s annoyinghow bad my brain wants it even tho my body is screaming fuck that don’t do it so I’ve held strong but mentally today is the hardest my body is feeling normal but I’m getting use to the feeling I just want to know if the norco makes you crave it or if thatsthe “addiction” and how best to cope with it? I just want to know what I’m going thru an no doctor where I live will be professional enough to give it to me straight to the mom just an addict. Ugh this suck…

  68. I was taking 10/325 then 5/325 every four and then six hours for three weeks. Dr. said I could stop – nothing about tapering off. I stopped and started having insomnia and extreme anxiety. It’s been about a week and doesn’t seem to be getting much better. I wasn’t sure what was going on till I did my own research. I’m surprised this wasn’t discussed by Dr. more upfront. I would have preferred to sweat out more pain. This is horrible and I need to go back to work. Is it strange to have these effects after being on the drug so short a time? This is going to go away right? 🙂 Anything I can do to speed the process?

  69. I have weaned off of hydrocodone under Doctor’s care–I was on 3 a day 10-325mg—then for a week 3 at 7.5 for a week–then 3at 5-325mg for a week and then 2 a day 5.325 and then 1 a day for a week–I have been done for 3 days so far I have depression and a hard time sleeping and a lot of anxiety–How long will this last?

  70. It was very informational. However after being a recipient of Norco for 11 years I am still unsure of how resolution can best be employed

  71. I am shocked so many doctors give these pills out with no warning on getting off of them. I did have a friend who had back surgery and his doctor did warn him and he was concencous not too get addicted. I took Norco’s for neck pain for about 2 1/2 months. I wanted to share my experience. First, I could not sleep after taking a pill. It greatly affected my sleep pattern while using Norco. We all have a different body chemistry and drugs affect ppl in different ways. After only a few months on the pills I never thought I would have withdrawal symptoms. I stopped taking them and physically was very sleepy, bloated, stomach aches, sweats, runny nose and coughing. Mentally, I became extremely depressed, no energy and irritable. I really felt lost. I can tell you that Thyroisine and B6 help with energy. I had taken Norco once before after a surgery in 2012. My doctor offered me an anti depressant. No thank you! I think counseling is really important for those on it for a long period of time. Get to the root of the issue. My experience was really odd. I wanted to smoke cigs and I’m not a regular smoker. I would go through a pack a day. For whatever reason, this drug was really bad for me. I pray you all have a better experience and are able to get off of this drug. There are so many alternatives to pain medications now.

  72. I was on norco lortab for three years starting after a shoulder surgery. I live a very fast paced life 5 kids my own business and lots of kids ball games so I was on a steady run. When I started taking the pills I had more energy and felt I could manage my time better. I do t think I was taking the pills for a high but for the energy they gave me to get through a 18 hour day. Rather I was taking 10s or 7.5s or 5s. Three was my limit of the day. I would break them in half except for the first dose of the day I took a whole. But after three years and a couple 1000 dollars later I’ve decided to stop cold turkey. Took my last pill on Sunday and today is the following Saturday’ I’ve had minor symptoms the worse was on the third day but I managed to pull through. I think I kicked the habit. I actually found 1 pill yesterday in my dresser draw and when I saw it I laughed to myself. Made me feel like the devil was tempting me. Because believe me I searched the house over on my first day looking for what ever I could find. I actually saved the pill as a reminder of how much of a hold it has had on my life but me saving that one pill makes me feel like I won.

  73. I have been off of them for 10 days myself, and yes…your body will have phantom pains…in other words, it will “create” pains in order for you to give it what it “needs.”

Mood swings are normal, and also…being a bit more emotional than normal may happen. Extreme tiredness is normal and getting irritated at small things.

It goes away, and the first 2-5 days are generally the worst…however, as many have previously mentioned…it can take a month to rid every single negative affect.

    day 12 though…you’re doing great!

Try exercising. I walked 3.5 miles on day 3 , and although I didn’t really want to…I felt so much better while exercising.

  74. I’ve been taking 5-6 500/325 Norco for 3 years. Before that, I was taking up to 30, 750mg vicodin for 7 years… 10 years total taking these devil pills. My question is, I am 12 days clean, went off cold turkey….I swear I keep thinking about taking them. I am not sure if the horrific pain i feel in my back is real, or is it the drug telling me I need it?!!! I go back and forth with myself, trying to talk myself into finding some……luckily, I am not going to give in, no matter what! Can Norco withdrawal make you think you’re in pain? Also, I was feeling better 2 days ago….I’m getting moodier, more tired and all around irritated…..I’m this part of the withdrawal package? How much longer do you think this will last? Thanks!

  75. It’s been 20 days for me now feeling better Ive been exercising almost back to normal i am so glad I quit my plan is to never touch them again

  76. Cal, you can do it. Don’t be tied to the pills. EVERYONE goes through withdrawels, and there is literally no stopping it. If you back off of them slowly, your withdrawels will just go on for a longer time…but, with less affects. If you do it quicker, then, your road to recovery is faster, but it’s not easy! If you’re at 15 per day, try 7 per day immediately, for a few days, then 4, then 2. Don’t go more than a week before going to 0. You will make it….but, you have to be strong!

  77. My husband and I have been prescribed 10/325 oxycodone 180/month for the past 10 years. Each of us have different injuries and at times constant pain. However recently we both decided that we no longer were using them for our injuries/pain but just to kinda get through our respective days. I’m a homemaker and has a full time demanding job. We have 2 children under 2 and it has been really hard to say no and stop. We stopped 12 days ago and had minimal withdrawal symptoms except for extreme tiredness, which is hard with two hyper children. My biggest concern is that we were partners in crime and if one of us goes back to taking them so will the other one. We have said no, we support each other and have complete trust. I just want to know when I will start enjoying life again. I feel like I’m just waking up and walking around but with no purpose although I am taking care of my family. I feel like if I take medication whatever I do or am doing is fun and doable. I know that is no way to live and im glad I want to change but I just want to forget I ever took pills ever because I like them so much.

  78. Here’s the deal….15 per /day. 5 years straight and have no idea on where to start the detox process. Thinking to slowly back off may be the best bet. Doing one less per day for 15 days until I hit 0. Please advise!

  79. I have took pain pills for 3 years and haven’t had one in 13 days I still feel like I have no energy to move to do any house work and mood swinds are awful. I’ve took 4-6 lortab 10s a day or even 3-4 perk 10s a day whichever I was able to get how long will my withdrawals last? I am trying to get my life back under control and stop depending on pills just to make it through the day. I have a wonderful husband who’s been supportive even though I’ve made it hard on him and a little boy just wanting his mom to play with him more but I hurt so bad coming off of these that I can’t hardly do housework! Please give me some input! Thank you!

  80. Your doing great you are almost thru the withdraws pleas for the love of god stick with it just remember day 5 is the worst once past that you will begin to heal I will check this daily if any way I can help I would be glad to

    1. Hi, Billie. Have you talk with your doctor about these conditions? I suggest you seek help from him/her to change your medication, or increase the dosage. Good luck!

  87. After being on Hydrocodone 5-10mg for years and alternating Oxy 5mg, Doc is switching me to Oxy 10 only!

  90. My dr. Took me off hydrocodone and started oxycodone. I am experiencing anxiety, nausea, withdrawal. Should the oxycodone offset this? I was on hydro 2 years

  91. Been o Norco for 13 years I picked up my prescription last month I’m wondering can Norco turn on you I itch constantly my legs look discolored my feet are agonizingly painful my calves hurts so bad I can hardly walk and I’m taking the Norco for herniated disc and cervical radiculopathy and severe arthritis can Norco do this and where are used to get pain relief

  92. I was given Norco for back surgery after me saying I couldn’t take it. I was then so out of it mentally, I couldn’t find out what I was taking. I was on and off for 8+ weeks and then started tapering off which took about 5 weeks. I don’t want it. Just feel awful since sgy 4 months ago. My doctor has tried various things to help me but I’m still having problems. He gave me Acamprosate Cslc 4 days ago and I’m having nausea and ad diarrhea and those are the two top things on the list to look for. I won’t take it tonight and call him in the am. I’ve been taking Xanax and Effexor for mental problems 22 years ago and have been great up until this episode. I had a drinking problem for awhile also. Now I haven’t had a drink since this episode and it was minimal. Please help. I’m getting discouraged. I don’t want any Nirco. No desire. Just want over these feelings. Brain fog and others.

  93. I’ve been on 10 mg Norco for almost 10 years. For the last 7 years 6 a day. My dr retired and I just don’t have it in my heart to keep on with it. So I’m trying to get off this mess by myself. Any advice?

  94. The father of my kids has been on norco7.5 since 2008. For the past few weeks I haven’t gave him any . he had a accident about a year ago that left him a bit mentally not normal. He has short term memory lost and confusion. He’s very quiet. I’m trying to help him hoping that with out the norcos he will regain soon though process. What do you think?

  95. Was just reading the posts here. Planning on stopping cold turkey tomorrow but have “planned” before and never followed through. I need to stop the hydrocodone use. Never have had a prescription and have been using illegally for years now. Pretty sure I’ve taken 70mgs over the course of the day today. More or less daily. I hate it. I work full time and taking time off is not an option. Anyways-wanted to post so I can follow the conversation and its the first time I’ve spoke about it. The only people who know I take it are the people I buy from. My partner and my family have no clue as far as I know.

  96. I took my last pill last night and I am determined to quit, This is horrible but I will try hardt to stop, i feel like I have just come out of major surgery My legs are very weak. I have a hard time walking, Is there any thing I should take to get thru this,

  97. I took hydrocodone 10 for around 2 years. Up to 5-6 a day sometimes. I quit cold turkey 3 days ago.

Day 1 I really just noticed extreme sweating and feeling overheated. Slept ok about 5 hours.

Day 2 was my rough day. Had chills that would not go away. Diarrhea. Stomach cramps. No energy. No appetite. Nauseous but never threw up. Couldn’t sleep longer than 30 minutes. Horrible restless legs at night, never experienced that before.

Day 3 stomach cramps are more painful but don’t last very long. They come sparatically. Still have diarrhea but controlling it a little with over the counter medicine. Heating pad helps pain and chills. Chills come in waves but leave just as fast. Feel minor pain in my lower back and legs. But nothing I can’t handle. Still no energy. But I’m starting to feel a little bit better. Waves of nausea but haven’t thrown up. I’ve been forcing bread, applesauce and Gatorade down. Taking vitamins.

From all the sights and comments I have read. After the third day it should start getting better. Im going to take over the counter sleep aid tonight. I’ll see if that helps.

Day 2 was the worst day and day 3 after the sun went down was when I started to notice I was going to get through this.

Hope this helps anyone going through withdrawals. What has got me through days 2 & 3 was remembering that this is temporary and just reading all the sights and comments (it’s a good way to distract your mind and makes the time fly by)

I thought I’d share my story because your stories really helped calm me. Hope mine will do the same.

Just remember to breathe and tell yourself that this won’t last forever. Try to distract yourself with reading or tv. And rest if you can. I’ve been on my couch relaxing the past 2 days. Even when I feel restless I move from laying to sitting. I’m not going to use any energy I might have if I don’t have to. So far it’s working.

  98. I had that surgery 11 weeks. Ago and was often on Norco 5 mg and 10 mg for about 2 1/2 months before tapering off. I have been going through terrible withdrawals and my doctor gave me gabapentin and Clonipine I stopped everything about 10 days ago and was feeling pretty good. All of a sudden I was I was having upset stomach, a lot of gas and gurgling my stomach and feeling horrible.upset stomach and a lot of gas and feeling horrible. Been in touch with my doctor and he put me back on

  99. 3 & half years 3 failed left knee surgery’s & 1 right knee live in pain but my body wants more Hydro325mg BUT I want to get Off hydro….Afraid…… I was a homebuilder 36 yrs now live in a recliner.59 yre old.

  100. I had a TKR and I was on Hydrocodone and I took it for 2 1/2 months I just stopped taking it and switched to Aleve helps with my pain… Mostly it’s mind over matter if you truly want to quit you can… I stop taking a whole one then half of one then none at all.., held the pain can last up to a year or longer.. I am a 67 year old lady… Good luck

  101. Took hydrocodone for over 10 years under doctor’s care .. not regularly at first , maybe a half tablet of 10/325 until about 3 years ago when I realized I was in pain if I didn’t take before the pain started up or they wouldn’t work. Never more than 4 in a 24 hr period though I would start running out before the 30 days were up thus I must have been taking them too close together . I decided as they weren’t working and I was scared of the addiction to stop all together . Though on my 21st day of not taking opiates , I am still having trouble staying asleep and I not only hurt like I have back problems but I have absolutely no energy and even find myself having to go sit down or lay down till I feel strong enough to get back up. Please , pray tell, when should my energy return . It is bad enough being a senior citizen let alone one without a bit of strength or energy .

  102. i know this is an old post but I’d really appreciate a response. I’ve been taking around 50mg of oxy/acet 10/325 a day for about 7 months.. But 72 hours into going cold turkey, and I’ve yet to have any severe symptoms. Some diarrhea and insomnia but no mood swings, craving, vomiting. Nothing. Am I just one of those people who won’t really suffer through withdrawal?? Or will it kill me tomorrow morning?

  103. Has been some time before I have blogged here. I ended up going to a detox facility in st. Louis. The severances of my addiction was more than I could do on my own. They had me on lots of Librium and zubsolv to help with the intense cravings. I was there twice as long as anyone else. After eight days (yep only eight days) I was feeling pretty stable, all flu like symptons had gone away. I am now clean for 45 days. The issue I have is still no energy and serious lack of ambition to get things done. It takes a strong support system such as family and friends. The truth is I miss it and occasionally have dreams of using.

  104. I have took percacet 7.5 for 3 weeks after my surgery then switch over to 7.5 hydrocodone. Total of taking Meds for 3 weeks. I am going. To stop taking them today. How bad will side effects be. Thanks in advance for your reply

  105. Hi Everyone…

I am a 60 y.o. male with a history of 2 heart attacks (5 stents). I broke my back 3 years ago in an auto accident. I have been on oxycodone (immediate release) 15 mg QID since that time (prescribed by a pain specialist). I had a 3 level fusion 2 months ago and have found that the pain has become manageable without the pills.

I’ll mention that, although I do stay within the daily amount, I did start abusing my meds last summer by starting to chew them and then drinking Malibu rum when I took them. I had bariatric surgery last year and found that I could get a little “buzz” by drinking a small glass when I took my pills (I RARELY ever used alcohol previous to this). Also, I have been taking them approximately 4 hours apart (4 over 16 hours).

Three weeks ago, I had an occasion of having what my PCP diagnosed as a stomach flu. I was vomiting (actually, choking up “foam” or dry-heaving as I have a “pouch” instead of a stomach), having debilitating sweats/chills, no energy, and was unable to eat or drink anything for a couple days. During this, I was unable to take any of my medications, including the oxycodone. I went to my PCP and later, an urgent care when the symptoms became worse. After swallowing several smaller pieces, I was finally able to keep the medication down long enough to ease the physical symptoms. Over the next week, even though the vomiting stopped, I was waking up nauseous, soaking wet and FREEZING (no fever – I live in Phoenix and it’s been in the 110’s). Last Friday, I had to be taken to the hospital and was admitted for severe dehydration and the symptoms described above. That ER doctor was the first one to ask me about withdrawals – which got me thinking about everything…and on this site.

At this point, they have pretty much ruled out any bariatric problems (although I am not ready to insist that it wasn’t responsible for the original vomiting issues – bolis?). I am a teacher and school starts in 2 days. Whenever I am about 10 – 12 hours from my last dose, I start having the most uncomfortable/unbearable physical symptoms…I’m still having sweats and chills, poor appetite, no energy, etc.

I’m pretty sure I need help getting off this crap, but I also have to function. I am single and live alone and I’ll admit U have been pretty worried the last couple weeks. I’ll find out next week if I can the pain will remain at a level that won’t require meds. I’m wondering if I should request in-patient detoxification (I don’t even know if BC/BS covers that type of situation) or if anyone can offer any information or suggestions on how to proceed).

I WANT MY LIFE BACK! Thanks for taking the time to help.

  106. I started taking vicodin 13 years ago. Started on the 5/500, then 7.5/500 and once I tried a 10/325 I was hooked. Didn’t have any type of surgery, just liked the way they made me feel. Uphoria, energy and just on top of the world. After a few years they really did nothing for me. I was tired and couldn’t clean house or make dinner. I didn’t want to go out or have fun. They clouded all my senses, emotions, and my love for life so what was the point. I wanted to stop and believe me I tried…On March 13 2014 I did. Went 23 days and relasped. So there I go again taking and searching and spending all my money because the doc I once had cut me off. I was discusted at myself but obviously not bad enough because if I was I would have stopped for good. So none the less I continued to take. Spent lots and lots of money. So on June 16th of 2015 I stopped cold turkey. Yes I did. 5 days of horrible withdrawal and after the 5 days no more pain BUT the want was still there. Not as bad though because this was something I wanted more than anything. To be free! To be able to have nothing control me. Its been a month and I have my days where my mood will change or I’m irritable or I have trouble sleeping but I know all that will pass. Maybe it will take 6 months, maybe a year, but dang whats a year compared to a lifetime of misery??? But to all you people who are taking for recreational use, YOU CAN STOP! I will only move forward and deal with whatever life throws at me until I don’t think about it anymore. If you’re a person in severe pain, well that’s a Lil diff. If there’s something you can take besides norco I suggest it, and if not then so be it. But I am proof that ANYONE can STOP! Just depends on how bad you want to……… Oh PS… If you believe in a higher power “God” reach out to him. It helps, believe me…

  107. I’ve been on hydroco/apap 5=325 and have found that it works wonders for m fibromyalgia BUT, I am loosing my hair! Is this a side effect of this medication.? I used to have a thick head of hair and now I’m miserable because I don’t know what to you please help?

    1. Hello Faye. There have been no toxicity reports of cases of hair loss due to hydrocodone use. However, hydrocodone is often combined with other non-opioid compounds such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, which may cause hair loss. Common medications that cause hair loss include, antidepressants, beta-blockers, birth control pills, calcium channel blockers, non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs NSAIDs (including ibuprofen) and retinoids.

  108. I have been on hydrocodone for a few years and I am trying to wean myself off them. I do have pain and my biggest concern is living with pain. I still remember how miserable I was before I started taking pain pills.

    1. Hi Karen. Living with chronic pain is unimaginable to me and I wouldn’t advise anyone to have to live with it. I suggest you talk to a doctor about finding another way you can manage your pain as you wean off hydrocodone and when you come off completely.

  109. I have been taking Norco 10/325 for almost 4 years was taking half a tab 4 times a day. Stoped taking them 4 days ago. Swollen glands, sore throat, night sweats, and cant sleep. Is the swollen glands and sore throat normal?

  110. I have been on Hydrocodone now since 20 April 2015 I have the 10-325, I had surgery for a fusion in my neck on the 27th of April, I had to take a more at that time but for the last few weeks I have been on two at night, I decided I want off them so last Tuesday I tried cold turkey and got no sleep so then the next day I felt like crap went home that night took two was great, slept great etc, tried it again by not taking them and bam samething, so by Thursday I tried to wing off, I went from 2 to 1 1/2, Friday I went to 1, then Saturday I went 1/2 and still was ok Sunday until sleep time, no sleep but was ok today, I want off what do I do. Please advise.

    1. Hi Jimmy. Your mistake is you are either quitting cold turkey and then going back on the meds or cutting back doses too fast. Your doctor can help you create a tapering schedule, which will help you lower doses over a period of time to relieve as many of the withdrawal symptoms as possible. Note that not all withdrawal symptoms can be avoided, but those that occur can be treated with short-term use of medications and herbal remedies. If you experience sleeping problems during your detox period and after that, you can use general sleep aids until your sleep patterns restored.

  111. I have had a serious addiction to hydro’s for 6 years. I have been taking 10-12 10/500 until the change to 10/325’s. I am on day 9 today and have no ambition and dealing with depression. I am hoping this is the time seeing as I have hit rock bottom. I will no longer allow this to rule me. I will win and you can to.

  112. I’m 6 mo pregnant .. Have been doing lortab and oxycodone for almost six months…. Up to 6 10s of lortab or 90mg of oxycode a day… This is at this moment almost 30 hours since I have had anything… With drawls are at a high… Scared to talk to anyone

  113. i took my last hydrocodone 12/24/14. I had been on it since an accident in January 2002. I have not slept at night since then. I sometimes can sleep a few hours during the day. How long will this go on?

  114. Help have coming off OxyContin and Vicodin for severe back pain from lifting my mother who had a stroke. Can handle most of the symptoms with OTC meds but the SEVERE stomach cramps for 5 days are killing me. Nothing seems to help, heat, showers ,OTC pain comes and goes with no warning. I need to function as I have a autistic son to take care of. What can I do ?

    1. Hi Caregiver. Call your doctor and see if you can set up an appointment as soon as possible. Maybe your doctor can prescribe another medication that would take care of the hydrocodone withdrawal symptoms. Good luck.

  115. Addict in AL..

  116. after I stop taking the meds I get an intensive urge to constalty strech my arms and legs. I have taken advil pm and taking hot bathes but evertime I lay down for bed this happenes. What can I do to make it stop so I can sleep.

  117. IVANA:
Thank you for your response Ivana.
At the moment, I do not have insurance, so I can not rely on speaking to a doctor. That’s one reason I ended up here.
Its been 3 1/2 days since last pill. I am going through the typical symptoms.
Do you have timeline for Restless Legs and Lack of Sleep? Not to mention my legs are always in pain. I have been taking lots of hot bath to take a break from the pain.
The diarrhea I can control with Immodium.
So if you have any suggestions on OTC’s, they would be welcomed.
You can see my first log to see what I am going through.
    Is the clonidine for headaches?
I let my family know what I was going to do, so they are all aware of my symptoms. I wanted to be sure that no one was hurt by my symptoms (mood and emotional ones).
After the physical symptoms are done (again what is the typical timeline that they end?), what is next and how long will those take?
I know your answers don’t have to be spot on, there are variables. But if I had a typical guideline of what will happen, it would make me stronger mentally prepared for what is to come.

    1. Hello again Cisco. The duration and intensity of Norco withdrawal symptoms depend on many things. Starting from how long were you taking it, how often and in what amount, your general health state, level of hydration, metabolism, etc. Aside from the variables you can read the general time-line of symptoms you can expect, in the article above. Restless legs shouldn’t last longer than a week or two. You can take Magnesium/Calcium supplements and Hylands Restful Legs to help with this symptom. Also, I know that heating pads work for many others. For the sleeping problems you can try the natural amino acid 5HTP, since the restless legs and withdrawal stress are a big contributor to having sleepless nights. Or you can try Valerian Tincture which is a herbal sleep aid. I hope this helps and that you feel much better soon, Cisco!

  118. i have been off hydrocodone 5mg for 6 weeks just wihin the last 24 hours I took one 5 mg tablet I have not taken any since, will this set me back, I hope not.

    1. Hello Cec. Don’t worry, it won’t set you back. But, if you are having psychological difficulties to stay away from hydrocodone, you may ask for help form any kind of community support groups. Talk therapy is great in helping people who recently quit a substance to avoid triggers and cravings that pull them back into using again.

  119. I just went cold turkey from taking viccidin 7.5 es 4-5 times a day. I never abused the drug I just took the meds for the pain and problems I have with my back. What should I look for during withdrawals from this drug. I am doing this with no medical supervision?

  120. Ivana,
You seem to know alot about the withdrawals. So, if I may, I tapered down from 8 10/325 norco pills a day to 1 pill a day. I admit I tapered out quickly, say 2 or so weeks. I had been on norco for about 2 years, before this I did not take large amounts. I guess I am the typical person, who starts out with what I needed, and went up because I wanted to feel better because my lower dose started not to work.
I was wondering what the main withdrawal symptoms were, how long each may last, does withdrawal effect you emotionally (suicidal, or lack of interest in life), what are the best medications to help with symptoms?
my symptoms consist of sleeplessness, irritability, lack of energy, emotional, depression, pain in legs, restlessness all over body.
Thank you. I hope to hear from you and anyone else who may be of help.

    1. Hello Cisco. You are right, that was a rather sudden taper down. But, now that it’s done, you are experiencing the typical withdrawal symptoms. You can treat the flu-like hydrocodone withdrawal symptoms using over the counter flu and cold medications. Medications like clonidine or Immodium are used treat symptoms such as high blood pressure and diarrhea. You can expect intense cravings in about 2 to 3 days after complete dose cessation. I’d suggest you consult your doctor before going further with this process, especially because doctors can prescribe meds to treat the withdrawal symptoms, give valuable suggestions about OTC’s you can use, and refer you to the next step in recovery. Withdrawal symptoms can include mood disorders and sleeping problems, and are treated using a combination of therapies. If you are having drug cravings or a hard time with your emotions, support groups located in your area and talk therapy can help your mental state. Plus, having a good support system will give you the strength to get through the process of withdrawal.

  121. I only take 2 10 milligram Norco a day for pain. As soon as the Norco wears off in about 6 hours I get extremely depressed almost suicidal.and have panic attacks But I’ll wait until my next dose is due when I take it I feel almost normal. How can such a low dose of this medication cause me so much depression?

  122. My 92 year old Mother was on Norco for over a month due to broken ribs and clavicle. After going off the drug last Monday (5 days ago) she has experience, among other things, black diarrhea that just pours out of her even though she is not eating much of anything. Is this normal? The Drs we have spoken to say it is normal when withdrawing from Norco, however, I am not sure that the “black” part is normal. Any one know about this? I spoke to her Dr. yesterday and she said that my Mother doesn’t need to see her that it is just from the Norco.

    1. Hello Lynda. Yes, although unpleasant, black, tarry stools are one of the many Norco side-effects. Did the doctor prescribe anything that would help your mom’s GI tract?

  123. Hi Justin. You are experiencing Hydrocodone withdrawal because your organism has become accustomed to the presence of the medication and now depends on it. In the text above you can read about the timeline of the withdrawal, read it so you can know what to expect. First of all, make sure you drink plenty of fluids, and electrolyte solutions (ex. Pedialyte) may help keep you hydrated. Also, regardless of your upset stomach-you must eat. Things like soup, crackers, carrot sticks, rice, bread or anything else that you will be able to tolerate. The rest of the symptoms can be treated with OTCs. Aches and pains that seem to crop up everywhere can be treated with acetaminophen (Tylenol) or NSAIDS like ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil). Also, try Ben Gay cream for aches and pains relief during the night. You can also get some other over-the-counter meds to assist your troubles sleeping. If you are not sure about something, just ask the pharmacist.

  124. When I was 18 my back went out. Horrible. Since then my back is progressively getting worse. On top of that my left knee cap sounds like sandpaper when I bends normally. About 4 or 5 years ago I was introduced to hydrocodone. The first few times of taking them didn’t feel like they did much if anything at all. Now they help control the pain but if I don’t have one to numb the pain it’s like someone is hitting me all over with a hammer. I ran out 2 days ago and today I’ve called in sick. My stomach gurgles and aches, my body aches, headaches, trouble sleeping. I can’t hardly make it out of bed. How can I detox faster? I don’t want these little white pills to control when I’m able to do something or how I feel.

  125. I have been taking hydro 10/325 for 12 years. I don’t want to take them anymore. They rule my life. I’m scared and I don’t know what to do

  126. I started heroin at 17 an kept using till I discovered methadone big mistake. I stayed on it for years an years it got to a point I was on 300 mgs daily. You know at first I thought it was miracle drug, because it kept me off opiates and I was able to live a productive life. Until i missed a couple day’s , and the withdrawals made heroin withdrawal look like child’s play. So I was in Vegas and finally I just broke down.I got tired of the methadone, so I called my home girl in south Dakota an the town I’m in there r know methadone clinics. My home girls had got hydrocodone, I was kind of suspicious but everywhere said even if u switch its nothing like coming off methadone. I’ve been like two months off methadone but as I was coming off methadone I’ve been taking hydro, now its been 7 days since I took hydrocodone an I feel like is it ever going to end.

  127. I have been taking MS Contin 15 mg every 12 hours prescribed first by a spine & pain specialist for chronic neck & back pain for 2 years, then by an NP who had her supervising Dr. Sign the scripts for me. My NP then had to go on medical leave for several months & I have been told by her office that they will no longer prescribe this med & I shud find a “new provider”….at that point I had 2 days of medicine left. On the 3rd day I went to ER & told them what happened & they said they don’t prescribe those meds & could only prescribe 10 pills of Norco 5/325. It was prescribed to take 1 every six hours, but the ER doc told me I shud only take 1 per day & then “brace yourself for withdrawal”! I’ve managed to get by on 1 every 12 hours, but will run out soon. I’m terrified of going into withdrawal as I already take medicine for depression, plus I have a history of having a head injury about 20 years ago & am also scared I may have a seizure & no one will be home to help me (my husband works 10-12 hour days). Meanwhile, I contacted the Hospital who oversees the clinic where the NP prescribed it, they have contacted the Dr. over her & he has said he may or may not prescribe the MS Contin for me. At this point I would rather try & get off of all of this really addictive medication, what should I do? I looked into Suboxone & there are Dr.’s in my area who are specialized in prescribing it…what wud u suggest I do?

  128. Stopped taking hydrocodone after 6 years straight, I didn’t sleep for 5 days at all, until I took 150 mg valium and then slept for 9 hrs. only, and yes I mean I took 15 10mg valium. I am a freaking monster not on opoids. Psychotic, I am going back and getting more from my doctor on monday until I can afford to get on suboxone treatment. Otherwise, I will kill myself, no joke, I’ve gone through withdrawals before and they lasted several months. This time it is way more severe. I need to be stepped down real slow if I want to be able to work and take care of my kids. BTW the kill myself comment is because I have had severe major depression for years, both my parents just died, I lost my job, and withdrawal on top of this crap…. I just can’t handle it on my own. I need help from a doctor.

  129. my 35 year old son has a opiate problem i think percoset dont know how long or how much. he has been lying to me i have been funding his street drug use i didn’t know i just thought i was helping him make ends meet. he worked 6 days a week. he has been living out of state for years. he came to my home yesterday his behavior is non functioning. he has no money no insurance. i want to help him. he seems not interested in helping himself. any advice? he said he hasn’t taken anything for 10 days.

  130. ive been taking 4-5 norco 10/325 for 18 days now. I’m planing tomorrow to taper down. How bad will my withdraw be? Anybody out there that could give me some advice. I’m hoping I haven’t been on them too long to really go through a bad withdraw.

  131. Hello Virginia. You can speak with your doctor about treatment options during this stage of hydrocodone withdrawal. Basically, you can treat this set of hydrocodone withdrawal symptoms using over the counter flu and cold medications as well as prescription medications. Some meds include: propofol, tramadol, methadone, buprenorphine, or naloxone, clonidine or immodium, etc.

  132. I been trying to quit cold turkey but l am having trouble cause I seen to can’t get rid of my grandkids and I was hopeing to do this with out pressure and away from kids, I had a injury in the job I have hurt my back, what is out there to help with the withdrawal symptoms. Please help, I can’t handle the symptoms, please help .

  133. I am on day six after going cold turkey. I was abusing hydrocodone and oxycodone as much as I could get a hold of it since a surgery a couple years ago. I did some pretty sad things to get it. Day one and two weren’t too bad but three and four were rough. Diarrhea and muscle aches. I was having joint pain in my knee and used that as an excuse to continue using. I’d have to say that I think it was always the start of withdrawal that was causing the pain rather than an actual injury. I haven’t been bothered with pain for the last couple days and I’m hoping it goes away all together before too long. Although I am far from being in the clear, I feel happy that I have taken this step in the right direction. I still have constant thoughts throughout the day. I keep busy and exercise regularly but any other advice to keep me going would be great. Thanks

  134. I was on some sort of painkiller for herniated discs since ~2001. They’ve fluctuated from a high of Norco 10/325’s, 10/day to 4/day. My last Rx before quitting was 6/day for the last 2 years. I’ve been off for 5 months now. I also did the taper myself, over the course of about 1-1/2 or 2 months. I used a muscle relaxant in conjunction with the taper. My symptoms were two-fold: insomnia- usually one night without sleep, one night with a few hours, etc.- this went on for a few weeks; and full-body muscle spasms that often felt like electrical currents running through my body. I can only imagine that this had something to do with my neurological system, given the years of opiate use… My primary doctor prescribed Elavil to be taken at night to help with both, but it only increased my symptoms, so I just had to deal with them/ wait them out. Five months later, I still occasionally get the “currents” feeling surging through my body at night, but only for a few minutes. It is hopefully something that will completely dissipate over time.

You have to really want to quit, and make up your mind to do so. I even kept about 10 pills for future use incase I had an episode, which I always do, of my back going out, and I was not tempted to touch them. That is how determined I was to stop. You can do it, too. Do not waste your time or money on potions, detox centers or the ER. (Some of you may need Immodium & extra Gatorade/water). Detox centers are just a scam for the weak-minded. Some doctors want you to present to the ER so that you will have a record of being a pill-seeker, and will never again be prescribed pain meds if you need them. That is BS.

  135. I seem. to be through the acute phase. sx. except being very tired are all gone. I didn’t use much as it was for break through. pain. The morphine was the problem . that lasted 18 days.

  136. I’ve been on Oxycodone (40 mg then down to10mg) for 5 years and switched to Hydrocodone (10mg) for a year due to chronic pancreatitis. I ended up quitting them last month and went through 9-10 days or horrible withdrawals, but after today its been 32 days since I’ve last taken anything. Now my question is, I ended up getting hurt and the ER Dr gave me 15 of the 5mg hydrocodone and I’m afraid to take them, If I do, will I go through withdrawals all over again after a month of being clean? Thanks

  137. Just thought I’d mention. chronic pain, all arthritis, crohn’s and many ohter conditions are covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act. I am researching if all this denial of pain management, docs causing people. to have to cold turkey and the arrest of docs that prescribe. coerrct aren’t a violation of our civil rights. there is much reading i need to do but everyone on this blog coyld read and post. it would move things along qwicker. Garfi

  138. Ihave been on morphine and hydrocodone. since 1994. I never took more than Rxd in fact onr months mrds generally. made it 3 months. 139. I have been taking hydrocodone for the last 5 years, I have been taking one 10 at night before bed and recently up it to two 10s before bed, I don’t take them to get high I have severe back pain which they don’t help the pain anymore, So I have decided to stop taking them, What am I looking at as far as withrawls

  140. I have been on hydrocodone for 5 to 6 years given by my VA dr.I was taken off this week said they did not want me to get hooked on it. Cold turkey and I am 67 yrs old with rheumatoid arthritis for 20 yrs. They told me just to take tylenol. I have been so sick for 2 days.

  141. ive been on hydrocodon and am doing cold turkey its been bad for thre days now , a little releaf is now accureing. i have a stressful job on my body will takeing two pills aday end up the same or do i have to work in pain forever

  142. I have taken various narcotic pills for symptoms that mimic trigeminal neuralgia for about 13 yrs with no problems. The last dose for 1 year was 10 mg methadone (due to low cost, on a budget) 2x a day. That is all I took and it seemed to work for me. However, I have decided to try to get off and then go back to the pain clinic to see what else they can do for me in a few weeks. My biggest problem is that my muscles ache and I have been off for 1 week. Do you think it will subside in this next week?

  143. Hello. I’m Tom. I’ve been on Vicodin for 10 years and taking like 7 a day average. Last time I took some was Thursday night and it was my last dose of them. Tired of them. It’s tough I’m so weak. I’m following the THOMAS RECIPE!!! Stay strong people because I am. GL

  144. Hi LUAN. I found that you should be fine within 8-10 hours after you took them. But, I would wait longer just to be safe because of differences in methabolism, health state, level of hydration etc.

  145. I have taken one quarter (ONE FOURTH) of one tablet of Hydrocodone Acetaminophen 5-325-TB once in AM and once at bedtime for eleven days. It did NOTHING for my pain, but made me nauseated, dizzy, exhausted, gave me very dry mouth, and diarrhea. I have doctor’s permission to just stop taking it IMMEDIATELY because the dose was so meager. When can I have SAFELY an alcoholic beverage?

  146. I am thinking about going cold turkey I’m just scared cause I don’t know what to expect. June 4, 2013 I had started taking Suboxone well everything was going great on May 25 myselfand my kids were in an ATV accident my son hit the throttle causing us to hit a parked cat I was taken to a trauma center with a skull fracture, fractured clavicle, and fractured ribs during my time in the hospital they pumped me full of morphine, oxycodone, and hydrocodone after 3 months of that the doctor wouldn’t see me anymore because he didn’t except my insurance so now I hate to say it but I buy off the streets. I no longer want to live like this I can’t go into a detox center cause I have kids and my husband works we are a one income family. Both of my sister’s are bad addicts my parents can’t help cause my Dad had throat cancer had his voice box removed and my Mom was just diagnosed with lung Cancer so a 2 and 4 year old is to much for them. Can you possibly give me suggestions on things that can help me cope with the withdrawal because seriously the only way I can do this is cold turkey I am really tired of living like this.

  147. I am in Australia therefore dosages are different. Further to my previous posts i have been successful in coming off high dosages of endone [ now 4 months] after 20 plus years. I was on equivalent of 150 Mg of morphine a day for years and years {100 Mg hydrocodone endone a day].Please please believe you can do it. My doctor from the pain clinic has even suggested i can have more hydrocodone for flare ups because he is confident i can stop if i want to. slowly does it.GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

  148. Hello Jor. Both, hydrocodone and librium can increase sedation. They can be taken together, but only if your doctor has recommended it. You should watch for any danger signs, such as extreme dizziness and drowsiness, or trouble breathing.

  149. I need to stop my hydros, because the Gov is really starting to make it hard to get them, I don’t want to jump through all the hoops, and also I have very low testosterone levels caused by long term hydro use, started in 2004 with 5/500 three a day after two back surgeries. I now take 7.5/325 3 times a day when working and 2.5 when not, so today I started breaking them in half for every dose, I found it easier, I took a half in the AM then another half in about 3 hrs, I usually take a whole in the morning. So at 2 pm I usually take another whole, I made it to 3 and only needed a half, then a half at night, so first day I have cut down from 3 to 2 pills. Taking halves and spreading them out lessens the ups and downs. I’m just worried about the severe withdrawals that are bound to happen. I have some tyl 3 I could take to help me sleep, In the past I have had good luck with substituting another drug to help the bad parts then get off the sub before i get to much into that. I’m thinking of asking my doc for some Lunesta, I used to take it and it helps me sleep really good. I really NEED to get off these pills.

  150. Hi, I was on 2 pills 3X a day for about a year. My problem is that I am also bipolar. While I was taking it for pain it also smoothed my emotions out. Now that I have stopped taking it for about 3 weeks I am having terrible problems with the extreme ends of mood swings. Any alteration in the bipolar treatments brings with it additional side effects as with anything else. I am also feeling that I should get some sort of plan together to kill myself because I know I won’t last much longer and the only thing people want to hear is that you are not going to do just that. Why would I ask for help if I wasn’t serious to begin with? Well my last message is that people with a bipolar disorder should never be given hydrocodone under any circumstance.

  151. I was on Hydrocodone for 6 years. And last month Sept 14 2014 i decided i no longer wanted to continue to depend on this meds. Plus my Dr was arrested for prescription fraud. .kinda didnt really have a choice. No other Dr’s was taken any of my old Drs patients…But anyway i have been off the Hydrocodone for almost 30 days now. And i have done it in my own. My stomach feels like its hallow inside. But other then that. Would you say my withdraws are all done. Really didnt have any withdraws. am i clean now?? Is it normal not to have withdraws?

  152. I have been on Hydrocodone for about 7 years. I realized that it was causing problems about 3 months ago and started to cut down on the dose I was taking. Before I started to reduce the dose I was having bad headaches every day and I think my increased back pain, plus abdominal pain which stopped my ability to eat very much.
In the last six weeks I did get down to about 3mg per day then went back up to 8mg per day because I get hungry which increases my abdominal pain and so I take more hydrocodone. The information that I have read seems to indicate that when I have reduced the dose this low, I should just stop completely and except the withdrawal side effects.
Is it correct that if I stay on a low dose it never gets out of your body and you then increase the dose and then reduce it again and just keep going round in circles. Can anyone provide some basic guide/help to stop this cycle that I seem to be in.

  153. i had shoulder surgery on 9-25 and was persciribed hydrocodone 7.5/325. on day 5 started having severe bowel cramping. Stopped taking the drugs at noon on 9-30. I now seem to be experiencing withdrawals. I was taking these hydrocodone 1 tablet every 4 hrs. How long will these withdrawls last? please help

  154. Hav taken over 2 or 3 years daily sometimes 6 a day sometimes 20 a day, been off completely now 3 days no change sure I wanna pop a few sure I wanna jus lay in bed and be left alone but I’ve attended church, birthday partys and have even been around others who are offering me some, I still have plenty but I turn them down, I don’t really WANNA quit but I know I NEED to quit. It began with back problems and more recently 2 replacement surgeries on same shoulder, and my dr. Always made sure I had pain med, as long as he get him some of what he wants (he likes the xanax and the adipex) I decided to find a new dr. And let him stop along with me, I’m sure he isn’t aware yet but as soon as he needs a refill he will learn the fact I’m done! It really helps, my friends, to surround yourself with people who are cheerful, to watch favorite shows and movies, listen to some favorite songs and tell yourself you CAN beat this! This little yellow tablet is NOT stronger than you! Buck up thru that craving and force yourself to get up and stay occupied, that’s what I’m doing I’ve got a lot more things done without the pill than with it! So I know each persons different, but we all have willpower and lemme say don’t hang with ppl who are popping them or who wanna talk about them 24/7 do it for yourself just think within a week or 2 you can look back and have something to be proud of! We got this ! We can make it a thing in our past

  155. I was in a bad car wreck and had to have surgery on my neck and arm I am taking Norco for about three years is the night sweats good for you and how long do they last it’s been about five days now

  156. Hello Jeff. The set of hydrocodone withdrawal symptoms includes the flu-like symptoms that last during 1-2 weeks after you stop taking hydrocodone. But, if it’s day 2 of not taking any, the worst part is probably over. You can let your doctor know about your withdrawal, just to be safe. He can give you advise and suggest which over-the-counter medictaions can ease your symptoms.

  157. Hi there,
I have been taking hydrocodone now for about 4 years, I recently got a refill on it two weeks ago and that was my max prescription….I dont get another refill till the 8th of next month and this is now day 2 of not having any, last night I couldnt sleep, im tired all the time, I get mad real easy and I just dont want to be bothered but the problem is I work every day and I have ruptured disks in my lower back so im in constent pain and I see a back specialist next month about undergoing surgery, How long can this feeling last cause once im off I dont wanna return to it cause all this would be pointless…..what are some things I can do to regain energy, sleep and help my back….I was taking about six to 7 pills daily…..

  158. I also got addicted after c prescribed me 10/325 4x a day but would take sometimes 6 a day if I couldnt take the pain.took them for 7 months cause of joint problems.thought I wasn’t addicted so decided to stop.threw me for a loop when I started withdrawing, had to go to a detox center cause I didn’t know what was happening and the hospital sent me there.sometimes I can feel alright like I can make it through and some days it feels like there’s no hope.its the worst thing I have ever experienced and I gave birth to a 10 lb baby.I thought that was bad but I would do that 100x over than go through this.but every time I get a craving or feel like death I walk around the block it seems to help.but I still cant sleep very well.I just hate feeling like I cant take care of my baby cause I cant even move.cant wait for this to be over! 10 days clean still got some time but I will do this!

  159. It sucks guys. I know. It really really sucks. Warm bath a glass of wine and some cough syrup will help for a few days as the worst passes. Call in sick to work and take care of you. I have 2 toddlers and became addicted after c section. It’s terrible. Feels like the flu (which they give pills for)… Good luck and remember you WILL survive. This too shall pass. Oh btw 3 mo sober! Xo

  160. My bf has been taking loritabs for 3 years and has quit cold turkey. He is in his second week and I dont know if I can takethe verbal abuse any longer . When does it stop?

  161. I am on my 16th day off of norcro and soma.. I can say this has been the worst experience ever ..I was introduced to pain killers after plastic surgery and just liked them after that.. I had been taking them for over 2 years or so and I stopped cold turkey (I WAS TAKING 10/325 ABOUT 9 PER DAY AND 7 SOMAS AT NIGHT) ..I went through horrible withdrawals and anxiety WHICH TO ME ANXIETY AND SLEEP DEPRIVATION WAS THE WORST. Went to see my doctor on my 5th day of withdrawal cuz I could not handle the anxiety anymore.. She prescribed me clonezepam 0.5 mg really low dose ..and as much I didnt want to take it I did.. It made me feel great it relaxed me and stop the anxiety completely ..I took that for 4:days a whole one for two days and then a half for another two days and then stopped those completely (AND THE ANXIETY STOPPED ON ITS OWN) BUT I TAKE THE AMBIENS EVERY NIGHT TO GO TO SLEEP AND I ONLY SLEEP AT THE MOST FOR 5 HOURS!!!!!!! I TAKE ONE 6.25 e.r. ..I wanna to stop the ambiens but I am afraid. I won’t sleep at all… HELPPPPP

  162. Hello GA GRL. Hydrocodone affects each person differently depending on the dosage and how long you have been taking hydrocodone. Usually the withdrawal symptoms will resolve within a week after you completely stopped taking the med. I’d suggest medical supervision if the harsh effects persist for much longer.

  164. I’m on hydocodone for back and hip problems, I’m diabetic. I fell twice, so I took more than usual of my pain meds. When I felt a little better I told my doc I over took ‘cuz I hurt my foot and then fell off the stairs, thought I would be fine. He told me “I can’t get you pain pills ‘cuz you signed an agreement with you doc I will let her know”. I phoned her said “I can’t help you go to emergency”. This is bulls**t. I can’t go through withdrawals I’ll get really sick. I can’t even get them to give me meds to help me through withdrawal.

  165. Hello April. I’d suggest it’s best you call your doctor and get an appointment. It’s not usual to have such symptoms after taking hydrocodone for that small amount and that short period in time. A doctor can examine you closely, conduct some analysis and give an accurate diagnosis.

  166. I went to ER for back pain and was told I had pulled a muscle, and because of that, I was having muscle spasms. I was prescribed Hydrocodone 5- 325. Over the course of 4 days, I only took six tablets. While being medicated those 4 days, I experienced an increased heart rate, shallow breathing, and cold sweats. I have been off the medication for 4 days now but I’m still having spurts of these reactions. In no way do I crave this medicine and this is my first time taking this many pills (took a couple of them about a year and a half ago back when I had a tooth extracted) I said all that to ask this, will these side effects eventually go away? Am I going through withdrawals after only taking it for 4 days? Should I seek medical help asap?

  167. Still off endone. Now few months. Wow! Seriously best I have felt in 20 years. Any questions?? I’d be happy to answer. Cheers, Wayne

  168. What about a 93 yo woman from Plate and one sliding screw (in hip joint, to allow for hairline crack healing – nit near blood supply, thank god).

She was prescribed 1 5/325 in morn one at nite, yesterday, and one this morning, now doesn’t want or need.

Will she experience any WED symptoms – because her mood does swing from really nice to crabby – 10 times more than usual (haha).

But, seriously, is the WD taper the same for those who have been on for 3 weeks at that dosage and someone whop has had only 3 doses (and low ones, at that)?

  169. this blog was most informative, after so many years of trying to cover my back pain I have weaned down to 2 5/325 a day for two more days than down to one for ten days and then one/half for ten days….hopefully by going down so slow I will not have some of the horrible effects, but sleeping and exhaustion is a true problem already…but truth be told the craving for more and more drugs was the source of a great deal of my pain and as I come off my back is getting better, colon is not happy but trying to eat better. Looking back I was always nervous about this drug and my doctor would say, “Quit fretting and take your medicine”, I do not go to her any more! Thanks for your information, the devil we know is always better than the devil we don’t know.

  170. For any of you struggling with serous WD from trying to stop pain meds, go online and buy some Kratom. WD will stop immediately. Don’t buy it from head shops or places telling you how “lucky” or “bomb” it is. Buy it from a reputable source. It’s a life saver…

  171. I am seventy two years old and have serious spinal stenosis and bad disk, I fell seven years ago and have been in really bad pain ever since. I have been taking Loratab for the past five years starting at 5/500 and finally being at 7.5/325 two at a time four times a day when I decided just maybe the drug was causing some of my pain rather than my back. I started down and am now at 5/325 for the next few days and then I will be off but I am so tired. I am almost too tired to sleep or even rest…just having severe exhaustion. Is this from the coming down, the lack of drug or perhaps my age. I have lost 15 pounds in the last six months and had lost my appetite but started on digestion enzymes and find myself actually hungry at times now. I am taking vitamins and herbs but is there anything natural that would help sleep and the exhaustion. Many thanks for any help you can give me.

  172. Last post 100/120 mg was endone equivalent to approx 150/170mg of morphine. I meant to say I was physically dependent on endone but not phycologically dependent. I may as well add iwas hospitalised on about 5/6 times for ketamine infusion while endone was reduced to 40/45 mg then discharged. NOT a good 20 years..I got ross river fever then had both knees and both hips replaced. I have osteoarthritis in many joints.l am now on lyrica a nerve pain suppressant I am told. To finish I nearly pushed my wife out of my life after nesrly 50 years of marriage dur to bad deptession. Thak heaven my marriage is the best it has ever been. We both forgot to ask each othet what we wanted. Cuddles in now bettet than any endone

  173. I have been on high dose opiods 100/125 mg per day for about 23 years prescribed by pain clinc. IHAVE STOPPED TOTALLY about 6weeks ago and I can start feeling my old good lost emotions coming back. Hairs stand up on the back of my neck agsin WOW. I have spent nearly 4 months a yesr in a mental facility for severe depression over past 4 years even having electro convulsive therapy. Long term help from a great pain phyciatrist and phycologist suaid they were wrong in keeping me on opiods for so long.i seriously had little problem slowly stopping. I have always known I was not physically addicted . That helped a lot.BUT I now have the first dose of flu in 20 years and it is getting worse
SHIT HAPPENS. So much more I could add maybe later.

  174. I’m on week 4 of recovering from an almost 2-year addiction to hydrocodones that ranged from 2-5 10/325’s per day. Honestly I’m not sure if it’s withdrawals, or depression brought on by other circumstances in my life, but I feel like crap all the time and majorly depressed. Again, I’m on about week #4 now. Wish I knew if the way I’m feeling is a longer term symptom of withdrawal of if there’s something else going on. Going to continue to push on through. I stopped by using a tapering system. Went from limiting myself to 2 pills a day to 1/4 pill per day until they were gone. This was over a month and a half period. I sincerely wish everybody fighting this fight the best of luck and all God’s blessings. This drug is truly powerful and dangerous, but it can be beaten.

  175. I’ve been on lortab 10 for six years and it will ruin your life,I stayed on themfor fear of withdrawal. The symptoms are so bad I stayed on them. Ihave been completely dependent on them and let them rule my life. I have been off them for three weeks. If you can get past 3 days you can do it. Neurontin will stop the restlessness and paranoia. My new doctor have me nucenta to takeinstead and I am using that to control the pain my brain is tricking me to think I’m in. I am only taking when extremely necessary so I can stop all meds. I’m going to do it you can too.

  176. Thank you ladies 🙂 I am now on my 10th day with NONE. I am very happy I’ve made it this far! I do have to say yesterday my 9th day was hard for some reaon. I am still not all the way back to normal. However I do not feel nearly as bad physically as the first few days. I don’t have aches or anything now. It’s just the mental part and no energy that’s still kinda hard. I will get there though! 10 days and counting 🙂

  177. On 8 years 4x a day 10/325. Cut back every week for 3 months. At the last I was at 1/4 of a tab a day…at night with a Xanax. Worst times were with diahara, and SEVERE stomach cramps that lasted for 60 days after the very last tb. I am now off 5 months! My pain in my back is less then I remembered. I train not so heavy at the gym now, and stretch alot. I am not tied to thet script anymore. HUGE HAPPY thing for me :0). You can do it…it takes time and you have to TAPER OFF. Quit when you have the pills. Just stopping is asking for trouble. I promise it will be OK.

  178. i am so sorry, Daisy. try to hang in there. you will be “normal again”. you (and i) will be so glad we did this. i still feel bad. congrats on your 6 days.

  179. I am now on day 6. First 3 days were the worse. Days 4 & 5 were not so bad. But today I am feeling awful? I have no energy and aching. 🙁 when will I be normal again?

  180. i have been taking hydrocodone from my friends bottle. i have been taking them sporatically. recently i have used them for a week at a time. about 7 -8 a day. i dont want to use them anymore. i am a asthmatic and when i stop taking them, i cannot stop coughing. coughing all night long. please help. when will the withdrawal stop??? thanks

  181. I have been taking percocets and lortab for over 2 years now. I’m finally down to 2 7.5 lortabs daily. Today was my first day without any. I am freezing and aching so bad. When will This go away? I don’t wanna take anymore tabs but can’t stand the pain 🙁 help advice please!!!

  182. ive been taking hydrocodone for the last 12 years and finally decided to quit because i was misusing them. im on day 7 clean but im so tired and weak. when will this end.

  183. I have recently stopped taking hydros going into my second wk tomorrow I had a shot in my back because of a ruptured disc which causes a lot of pain in my legs I know its a lot harder to stop cold turkey which is what I did but the pain is almost unbearable I was wondering if I took maybe a half of a hydro will it throw me right back into withdrawal im just trying to find some kind of relief it’s worse when I sit down the dr says thats because of the pressure on my back I have went a wk with nothing so I was wondering if it would be a real big deal to take a little just to take the edge off please help!

  184. Hello Randy. Insomnia and increased temperature are two common symptoms experienced during opioid withdrawal. Muscle cramps and restlessness are also common. But other than avoiding cold turkey through a slow taper, you’d have to consult a detox clinic in order to figure out how they would treat these symptoms. The insomnia should resolve within a few days of last use, but the discomfort can remain for weeks, especially after long term use. Can you phone a local detox clinic or walk in at least for an initial consult?

  185. OK I’m ashamed as you’ll read later, I have been taking norco 5/325 up to 20 a day for the last 3 years. I got to day 4 and just couldn’t do it anymore. I know why did I go so far then stop! Well to be honest, I can handle the leg pain and the rest of the job I gotta do, EXCEPT the high fever over 101 degrees and no sleep for 3 nights 4 days. NONE at all, I feel i wanna crash but cant. How do I stop the fever and the no sleep because of it and the leg pain that also keeps me up. I have always have a high tolerance for pain but just can’t shake it. I am in the criminal justice field and where I live I will loose my job and never be able to serve ever again, so rehab or telling the doctor is out of the question. I have tried, IB-Profin, Tylenol, and z-quill. WHAT CAN I DO TO SHAKE THIS????? Please help.

  186. My reg doc has had me on hydros since 09. He recently sent me to a pain specialist who put needles in my spine. The PS gave a Rx of ibprofin equivalent to 4 reg ibprofin… I am in more pain now than before. Should I go back to my reg doc to be weaned off of these? I am suffering a migraine, sweats, chills, fever, sick to my stomach, among other things and it hasn’t even been 24 hrs yet. I can’t tolerate pain like most, I’m very sensitive to pain like I am having!

  187. I have been taking Hydrocodone 10/325 for about a year now i ran out 2 days ago this is my second day of withdrawl i have the craps im sweating some i dont have rls its my arm drivinv me crazy i cant hardly sleep and im kinda moody i have kids and need to get better for them i dont have money to go to a Dr what can i do ar

  188. I take one a day..and that’s it. I am on 7.5 325 of Liquid Hydrocodone/APAP…I still feel the effects..and when the hydro wears off after that 6 hours, I get chills and the shakes and my teeth chatter for 10 minutes…

  189. I found this site while lying in bed wide awake all night for the 3-4 night dealing with withdrawals.. Maybe getting a couple hours sleep at the most. I started taking my wife’s oxycodone 10/325. I would take the pills every once in a while, but then started taking them every day. Like Andy did. I would take them for the stressful days and times. Then I ended up getting my own script for hydrocodone 10/500. Starting with 60 a month then 90 onto 120 a month, and would always run out before the next month. I had back pain but the crazy thing is that it seemed that my back hurts alot worse while taking these meds. I would take up to 8 every day. Then I learned that the maximum dose Tylenol that can be taken in a 24 hour period is 4000mg. Anything over can cause severe liver damage even death. So I ask for the 10-325 and the doctor cut me back to 90. Then ran out in two weeks. I have now decided that this is ridiculous to have this pill control my life. It has become a major distraction and they don’t even make me feel as good anymore. I just took them to stop the withdrawal symptoms so I can feel normal and get some sleep. I tried to taper off before but it didn’t seem to help. I am now on day 4 and have insomnia, pain in my legs and am irritable. I’m going to try the benadryl thing that Andy posted. I hope that I can kick this. I would like to be in control again. I can’t imagine having to keep this lifestyle up for much longer.

  190. This is day 7 for me & my legs are ache, & ive had 0 sleep……how long will these symptoms last? What to take or do for the pain im feeling????

  191. i have been snorting loratabs for over 3 years now and my new years resolution was to stop. i am on day 6 and i will tell you it has not been easy, i have had panic attacks, trouble breathing, along with aches and pains of flu like symptoms. my head has suffered horrible headaches more of a migrane mixed with sinus pressure but i have made my mind up that im not gonna let this pill run my life anymore. my head still feels droggy and first few days i felt like i wanted out of my body like a paranoia yes snorting does mess with u just as bad as orally and maybe even worse. please dont let anyone tell u different i am here in the now my mind after 6 days still says u snort a tab u will be fine. not so i want a clear head and im still not there. i started snorting a half a day and before i knew it was nothing to do 5 a day. my husband takes orally and wouldnt do half of what i did because when u snort u get a rush or immidiate high and before long u will chase for that feeling again like a cocaine addiction

  192. Try being on them for 6 weeks just 2 a day for an infected tooth and a surgery on the gum line……. Man Ive been off them for 10 days still have the craving for one…….this drug is terrible and I never knew how addictive they were but Im busting cold turkey on it and will beat it……….

  193. I am terrified of having a seizure or heart attack, but my doctor says I need to come off of lorcet plus. I have been on this rx for almost 9 years. what is the WORST that I can expect? i’m doing this cold turkey, on my own.

  194. I have been in pain management 7 years for back and neck issues. I have been taking 3-4 10/325 a day. Tired of feeling tied to this script. I tapered off first 2 weeks by just taking 1 less a day. From there I took a 1\2 instead of 1 for a couple of weeks..then down to just one befor bed for a coup;e of weeks…then 1/2 before bed for a couple of weeks. I lived for that one half of a pill. It has been 4 days since ZERO. I have mild stomach crampsmost ofl the time, no energy and loose watery stool almost every time I go. I woke up the last two mornings, bad cramp in both calves. I felt sort of like I remembered my self to be before the tabs…each day seems a TINY bit better, at the gym every day still, just trying to get in a workout. But now on top of the w\d symptoms my pain is back for real. I just want to be the person I was 10 years ago..if I even remember who she was.

  195. I has taking 5-7 tablets of hydrocodone 10 just to get out of bed. I continued to take 2-4 every few hours while I was awake. Drug withdrawl would happen during the night time and I would have to get up just to prevent it. From my experience slowly getting off hydrocodone when taking large amounts is not the best avenue. Increasing doses taken over time increases opiate receptors in the body. This is why when coming off the drug, tapering prolongs the withdrawl agony. Taking smaller amounts just tells the brain it wants more. The mind will induce it’s own pain to play tricks. Best plan of action is to come clean. Tell your doctor you would like to undergo detox under supervision. Get rid of other stashes around the house. Get support after you leave the facility.

  196. Thanks Andy. Its 9/15/13 at 11:47 PM. It’s been 17 days since I stopped taking Norco. I still can’t sleep. I’m taking Somnapure which is a natural sleep aid and I’m also taking two .5mg pills of Lorazepam. Even with these sleep aids , I’m still tossing and turning until about 3 AM. I wake up at about 8Am so I’m getting about 5 hours. I’m gonna try that hot shower with Benadryl tomorrow night. I can’t believe that six weeks of Norco screwed me up this bad. At least my appetite is almost back to normal. Thanks and the best wishes. Adrian

  197. Adrian, I was on Norco 10/325 for over 20 years straight. Mine started with knee pain as well. I finally got off of it in March and have not used it since. When I was going thru the first week of withdrawal, I could not sleep either. After 2 night of being wide awake, I went to the drugstore and got some Benadryl. At 10pm I took a dose of Benadryl, then I got into the shower and used the hottest water I could tolerate. I stayed under the running water for about 10 minutes to help the Benadryl flow and get my blood vessels opened up. It actually worked. I got out of the shower and went straight to bed and at least got 5 hours of uninterrupted sleep. I did this for the next 5 days, and by then the withdrawal symptoms were wearing off and I started to sleep without the Benadryl. I hope this helps. The first week is the WORST, then it gradually gets better. Hang in there! Andy

  198. I had a total knee replacement on 7/17/13 and began taking 10/325 Norco on 7/19/13. At about the 3 week mark I began to lose my appetite and was eating almost nothing at all except for some ensure drinks and an occasional soup and sandwich. I decided to stop taking the pill right around 8/26/13. I began cutting them in half until 8/29/13 where I completely stopped. Since that day I have not been able to sleep at all. I go to bed at about 10 or 11PM and don’t fall asleep until around 6AM. Last night (9/2/13) I tried going to sleep at 9:30PM and as of 7:34 this morning I have not slept at all. Can you please give me some advice as to what I should do at this point to help this major sleep problem. Thanks!

  199. Hello Venus. Yes, restlessness or a kind of crawling-out-of-your-skin feeling is one symptom of opioid withdrawal. Talk with your prescribing doctor or a pharmacist on the phone to report the symptoms and work out a treatment strategy. OTC medications can help, exercise, etc.

  200. got put on 7.5\500 hydros for tooth ache 3 weeks ago. I don’t like to take pills, but the pain was so bad i went ahead. ended up with dental surgery, continued with the pills. i decided two days ago my pain was manageable without the hydros so i switched to alieve. i couldn’t sleep last night. felt like i needed to crawl our of my skin! tossed and turned! today I’m feel just dry mouthed and super icky! a don’t touch me kind of way. can’t tell if i am going through a withdrawal after that short use, or if it’s something else? I’m very irritable!

  201. you obviously dont know…I will never go through this again!!! 10 yrs is too long. doctors for not warning you what it would be like to finally get off them…Shame on them!!

  202. I was taking hydro’s for 10 yrs..decided it was side started to hurt and i worried for my liver and kidneys.went to a hospital for 4 days for detox..which they use the methadone taper with librium for the anxiety and rls, Felt super good when i was out of hospital..for about 3 days..then all of a diareaha, and rls again..mood swings not at all, but loss of apetite. still not able to eat much..have to force trying to exercise as much as i can and keep busy to keep my mind off it…but to make matters worse..i have to live with someone who HAS to to take them…its tuff but im doing it..have tramadol if it gets too bad..pharmacist says not addictive…i hopehes right..also taking lots and lots of vitamins..praying for strength..but have it set in my mind im done with these little devils..

  203. I agree. Since the Norco no longer did anything for pain, the majority of use was to get past difficult times and stressful days. I blamed the lack of energy on the NORCO more so than depression. Since I have been off it for 162 hours I am still slow moving, but I am not sure how long it will take to get 21 years of the drug completely out of my system. I will see if I can find a local therapist who will assist me with the problems I currently face. I absolutely REFUSE to ever go back on that drug for any reason. I knew it was harmful, but the past 6 days of withdrawal were far more remindful of it’s harm. Thanks for your input!

  204. Hello Andy. Right. Sounds like Norco became the go-to pick me up after some time. I’d suggest that you actually try a combination of lifestyle changes. Depression indicates a lack of energy. Regular exercise can help. As can talking with a mental health professional. The fact that you reach for a Norco when feeling down indicates a psychological factor to use. And the cravings you describe are characteristic of addiction. I’m not saying that you’re a Norco addict – just that you may be in the range of someone who can benefit from looking into the psycho-emotional elements of use. Does this ring true for you?

  205. Hi, I have been on Norco 10/325 for 21 years. Yeah, 21 years. It started long ago when I had a knee operation, and I Just finding doctors to refill the pills for me. Currently I was taking 4-5 pills per day. I decided last week to stop the pills because even I could see they were ruining my marriage and my life. The last pill was 4pm March 4th. Last week was a serious issue with withdrawal problems…chills , joint pain, RLS. Most of that is over, but I am now seeking Norco again. I do not want to get started on them ever again, but I am looking for help with the depression times when I grabbed a Norco to help get thru. Do you have any suggestions on how I can make it over the rough spots thru the day without starting back on the pills? I don’t want a substitute medication, I just need help for bad days, like today, when I would love to have a couple Norco. I work 6 days a week from 6am-6pm so I have to find something that will help while I am at work. Thanks, Andy

  206. Hi Ad Lynn. Thanks for your question. Most acute symtpoms of hydrocodone withdrawal such as changes in appetite resolve in the first week to 10 days after cessation. Often, the nausea and vomiting can precipitate this disinterest in food. But if the loss of appetite lingers much longer, I’d suggest that you check in with a physician to investigate further.

  207. i have been on hydrocodone for a is my 5th day without them…i have had flu-like symptoms, body aches, mood changes, most of the withdrawal symptoms…i have had severe loss of appetite..when will i get an appetite back?

  208. Hello Kansas. It sounds like withdrawal to me. Most time, withdrawal is provoked when you have a dose decrease of >50%, which is the case. Withdrawal generally peaks about 3 days after your last dose but can linger for a week to 10 days after cessation. If you’re not feeling better in a few days, perhaps be sure to get a throat culture to rule out bacterial infection and/or proceed to the doctor’s office to seek diagnosis. Best of luck!

  209. I have been taking hydrocone 5/500 daily for 15 months. Ranging from one to 6 pills a day. I have averaged 3 day for the last two months, then went to 2 pills a day for 3 days, so Monday took 3 pills and then had to drop to 1/2 a pill a day on Tuesday bc I am about to run out and will NOT get a refill as i am tired of living this way. So Tues/Wed/Thurs (today) have only had a 1/2 pill. Only have one pill left, so will take 1/2 pill on Friday and then a half on Saturday. On Wednesday morning, I started to have chills and tearing of the eyes, hot flashes, then cold, and my legs hurt. Started coughing a lot last night. Called in sick to work today. However, my son recently had the same flu symptoms(within the past week) so I am wondering if i am truly experience withdrawal symptoms or am sick. Given my length of time and dosage of the pill, how long can I expect my symptoms to last? Just want to see light at the end of tunnel.

  210. Hello C Pain. Tapering is always best when trying to stop taking opioids. Ask your prescribing doctor for a schedule, or consult with a pharmacist. The daily doses are tricky – 10% a day decrease, never more than 50% at once. But over the course of 2-3 weeks, you’ll have almost no hydrocodone in your system, making the transition to cold turkey 0 hydrocodone much, much easier.

  211. I had a Total Knee Replacement 3 1/2 months ago. I was taking 2 pills every 4 hours for about 2 1/2 months. Then I tapered down to 2 every 6 hours for a couple weeks and for the past week I have been taking 1 pill at 10am and 2 pills at 8:30pm. The pills are 7.5 hydrocodone and 235 acetaminophen. A couple weeks ago, I tried going off them cold turkey and had very annoying restless knee symptoms and was just generally very irritable. I couldn’t sleep and so I took 2 in the middle of the night and a couple hours later was able to fall to sleep. Should I just quit taking the 3 a day or should I taper down to 2 and then 1 and then zero? It seems like my knee starts getting wiggly about 10 or 11am and seems to stop acting up after I have taken 1 tablet. Thanks for your advice.

  212. Hello j goode. Hmmm. Headaches can be indicators of many different conditions. Not restricted to withdrawal. It’s possible that the high doses of Lortab and Norco were blocking this pain for some time. I’d suggest that you consult with your family doctor first and then seek a referral to a diagnostic service, neurologist, or pain medicine specialist, if necessary. It’s important to diagnose strong headaches because it is a sign of real body stress.

  213. i have been snorting for years lortab, norco stop one week tomorrow just taking them by mouth. less then half what i usually take. my whole left side of my brain from my eyes past my back of my ears is a constant pain and pressure is this a withdrawl? Been taking ib 800 and headache pills no relief.
